Thanks for that. I'm looking at doing a similar trip but from VTA. I did Gaviota to Coho anchorage as a warm up in late Oct. A bit different though with land never more than a half mile away. Thanks for the detailed NavLog as well , great info!

Great. As a relative newcomer to SoCal, is VTA Ventura? You're definitely closer there but the typucal wind direction could be a challenge. It'd be great to depart from Santa Barbara and return via Ventura (which I kind of thought we were going to end up doing by accident!)

I recently acquired a single place Adventure Island and then a Tandem Island with the intention of doing one or more Catalina trips from Perhaps Palos Verdes or any SoCal site and may be interested in doing so with some other people with Hobie Islands. Currently Just using them on a lake. Alan.

Congratulations on your new boats! I'm sure you'll have lots of fun. At the risk of telling you something you already know, you'll definitely want to get lots of ocean experience before attempting any crossings to the islands. Also consider mounting an engine.

@@tomlewis509 Engine? HaHa that’s what the mirage drive is for 🙄. Actually will probably have an electric motor and definitely will have it thoroughly pre-planned and will build up to it experience wise. Thanks for the reply.

@@alanaldpal950 that's what they all say until they're caught 20 miles from a safe shore, downwind with an angry sea. Have fun peddling your way home. Electric motors are wonderful but limited in range. I feel way more secure knowing I've got the 4-stroke and enough fuel to get me home. But to each his own, right? Any of us that take a Category D boat out in the open ocean are already taking a risk; I just like to minimize my risks.

@@tomlewis509 Well my training goal has been to be able to pedal the whole 22+/- miles to Catalina if needed. I am up to 400+ consecutive days of pedaling (with a mirage drive) from 3 to 7 miles a day. I actually alternate rowing one day and then using a mirage drive the next as it is also my goal to row (a Heritage 18’ boat) to Catalina…. On a different trip.

That’s a trip on my list with my TI…I want to take it into painted cave too…I think crossing from Santa Barbara would be better than from Ventura…So many little protected coves that I couldn’t get into with my larger Catalina. Nice trip, thanks for sharing 👍🏼

I thought we were going to end up in Ventura on the way back! It's a great, challenging trip and we might try it again next year now that I know I can do it.
