FYI, lots of commenters saying I called the cops. No I didn't, you obviously did not watch the video. The train is coming to a stop well before it gets to my location, in fact I almost packed up and left because it was taking so long to arrive and starting to rain. I just happened to be there with my camera and radio and this is what I saw, stop blaming the messenger. The railroad has rules where if other trains spot riders they have to report them and stop to check them out. I have no idea why local police arrived other than the train dispatcher probably called it in as part of protocol.
@DrLumpyDMus3 жыл бұрын
If you called the cops you wouldn't be the bad guy here. Quite the opposite. You would have been doing the right thing. No different than ME calling in a trespasser on YOUR property, or any other crime in progress. Trespass and violating federal law is not the mark of a hero. It's what criminals do. There's not an argument about train hopping being right or wrong. It is simply wrong. Illegal at the federal statute level. You couldn't get more black and white "wrong" than that. The only argument is "I don't want it to be wrong". There are no good reasons for it being acceptable, there are hundreds of reasons for it being wrong. But throw out all the reasons, and it still is, simply, unarguably, against the law - wrong. Here's a simple test when faced with some kind of question like this - If you were a parent, and a school teacher was telling your kids "It's ok to hop trains, even if it's against the law", would that be acceptable to you as a parent? Do what is right, always, and you'll always be right.

Trains are fascinating! They run on all steel wheels, on steel railroad tracks. Every individual freight car has its own brakes and when stopped has a few extra inches of hitch-slack, between each and all freight cars! This individual railcar slack & brake system allows the train to stop and start, one car at a time, on inclines, uphill, downhill, or on level track & how a very few train-engine cars, can pull the trailing 30 to 80 million lbs of freight-cars. Hobos did ride freight trains before 1960, used to sleepover in our neighbors hay & straw barnlofts, steal a chicken or 2, and sometimes haunt our midwest farm neighbors, only 1 to 2 miles distant.

I rode the rails from Thunder Bay Ontario to Banf Alberta. We jumped in one of the diesel units and the crew came to us with coffee and sandwiches during the ride! Better jump off before the train gets in the yard, otherwise your fenced in and railroad cops will get ya.

For those griping about the unwanted passenger on the train, I now understand why railroads are sensitive about people trespassing on their property, especially if it’s a heavily used line like here. I was reminded of someone I knew of who was late for work many years ago and tried to cross between a pair of stopped rail cars, only for the train to suddenly lurch into motion, causing her to lose her balance, and then her arm at the shoulder. She ended up going back to her hometown and living on disability with family members until she passed away of old age a few years ago.

I worked at a convenience store next to the Reading Railroad/Conrail tracks in the late 1970's/early 1980's. Hobo's would hop off the cars when they came into the yard. Conrail police always on the lookout for them. This was in Reading,PA. This was an active yard, with the maintenance buildings still working.

After 911, you couldn't be too careful about who was on the trains. Exeter police caught an Afghan man that ICE was looking for for 2 years after he overstayed his visa. From 1959 to 1965, I grew up in Brookpark, Ohio in a new housing area on the edge of civilization and spend most of my time out in the woods. In 1965, when I was 11, my parents moved into the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. For over a year I watched and studied yard crews getting on and off rail cars getting sorted at a yard east of the Cleveland airport. At 13, I took to hopping New York Central then Penn Central trains with a friend to escape the city as I hated Cleveland. Most of the time we didn't get caught and got off the train before it came into a yard, and caught another train leaving in the direction we came in from. A few times we did get caught and were not charged with anything. Just sent back home. At my age now, I wouldn't get the same treatment as we did as juveniles. I've also noticed that freight cars are no longer passenger friendly like they were in the late 60's.

When I took to hopping freight trains and got caught, I was court ordered to see child psychologists. They would not accept I was running away from Cleveland as I hated being there. They kept insisting I had a problem with my parents but I didn't. They couldn't accept I hated the city. I currently live in Canton, Ohio and I'm stuck here. I'd still rather live in a rural area.

@@louismiller7 I rode trains to many places, Elkhart, Indiana, went through Horseshoe Curve in Pennsylvania at night. I think it was Horseshoe Curve as the wheels squealed for a long time. Got off in some small town and some hippies gave us a ride back to Cleveland. Made it to someplace close to Pittsburgh got off as we came into a freight yard, caught a train going back the way we came in but instead of heading back to Cleveland when we came through Alliance, Ohio the train headed west and we got of as it came into a freight yard east of Canton Ohio. Looking back, I have some regret to what I put my parents through. When I was gone they were afraid to answer the phone thinking they would get bad news. @@Dogvinity dont get me wrong I understand the importance trains are for the economy, for the daily luxuries we take for granted and everything else. @@M4G4M4N even the people who run the trains don't like it. It's dangerous. More can go wrong. Especially with executives pushing one man crews. Richland! I spent the 2003 Labor Day weekend there camping at an old quarry used as a swimming hole, camping, and picnicking. I was learning to use antique hard hat diving equipment at a rally with the Historical Diving Society. Beautiful farm country there but the Amish had just fertilized a large field with manure and it stank something awful. But worst of all were all the freaking freight trains rumbling through and blowing their horns every half hour all night long. Couldn't sleep at all. I don't know how the residents can take it. Still it was an exciting weekend and I had some time to do some sight seeing. Beautiful countryside.
