Henry Hobson (Charles Laughton), a British widower, is the overbearing owner of a shoe shop. His three daughters -- Alice, Vicky and Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) -- work for him and all are eager to get out from under his thumb. When the headstrong Maggie announces she intends to marry Henry's best employee, Will (John Mills), father and daughter engage in an intense showdown. As Maggie works on launching a competing business, she also helps her sisters free themselves of their domineering father.

We were made to watch this film in school in 1983. It still remains one of my favourite films to this day. A beautiful example of the media.

Absolutely terrific movie, one of the best that ever came out of the UK. It's a dreadful shame that Brenda de Banzie never received the same recognition that Laughton and Mills did in her career. What an amazing actress. Unfortunately, there weren't many strong, meaty roles written for women in her day. The character of Maggie is the driving force of the whole story and I can't think of another movie or play which gives that kind of rein to the female lead. The original play dates from 1916, when such roles were practically non-existent. A unique work in its time.

I agree! It's unjust that Brenda de Banzie is not a household name. She was a quite remarkable talent. The Terry-Thomas film "Too Many Crooks" has a marvellous performance by her as the victim wife who turns on her abusive husband. (The plot of the film was plundered for "Desperate People" with Bette Midler.)

I love watching a good old black' n' white film..preferably on a saturday afternoon(no idea why). For some reason i feel relaxed and grounded when i see one. I love the fact that we are watching a film made 65 years ago, depicting a time around 65 years before it was made.......oh, just ignore me, i'll put the kettle on.

Odd, there are many film critics who believe that this film is one of Laughton's worst roles due to his obvious over-acting in many scenes. Still, it remains one of my favorite English films and although Laughton was not showing his best work here (I remind everyone of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Witness for the Prosecution, Mutiny on the Bounty to name a few) I still like the story.

A great women's-libber film: choose her own husband, start her own business, get the right husbands for her sisters, and then buy out daddy. A formidable woman. All the men did as she bid them, and they were all better off for it.

30 was more like 50 in the 19th century, people only lived to 40-45 and looked far older and died earlier. That's why they cast older actresses.
