The stories were just so good people kept them alive. It also fleshed out cryptic and confusing lines or references in the Old Testament that needed explanation. A "war in Heaven" is alluded to but never fully described. There were other popular stories about Jesus as child and all sorts of things that never made it in.

Like the akaname (aka filth lickers), who slurp up dirty bath water. Or the Tōfu-kozō, children serrving you tofu that groes moldy while you eat it. Or myy favorite, the Ashiarai yashiki, which is a giant foot covered in dirt and blood that randomly shows up in your house demanding to be washed in a booming voice.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know that the "Burney Relief" at 9:54 which you show while talking about Lilith is actually *probably* a portrayal of the goddess Inanna/Ishtar or possibly the goddess Ereshkigal. The several horned crown, and the rod and rings she is holding are symbols of a powerful goddess of high status and would never have been used to portray an evil demon in Mesopotamia.

Lovely video! Here’s one thing about Dagon though, (or Dagan, as he was called by the phoenicians): he actually wasn’t (probably) depicted as a merman. This is a case of folk etymology from the Middle Ages, that tries to explain a mysterious passage of the Bible: it is the same incident you mentioned about the Ark of the covenant, when "Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the Ark of the Lord, and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off upon the threshold; _only Dagon was left on him_ ". Many have tried to explain this last _Dagon_ as his fish part, since in ancient Hebrew "dag" means fish. This theory was encouraged by archeological findings in the Near East, depicting merman gods, like Ea, Enki or Oannes, however, none directly attributed to the phoenician god Dagan. The Septuagint, the ancient greek translation of the Old Testament, actually translates that passage as "ῥάχις Δαγων", Dagon’s back. The writer Philo of Byblos, who had some phoenician sources available, saw Dagan as a fertility god and understood his name as meaning "grain". Which makes some sense, since the few surviving myths of Dagan seem to be related to those of the hurrian fertility god Kumarbi.

The Legion story most likely reflects the ancient belief that knowing something, or someone's, "true name" gives you power over them (like when your mum uses your full name and you know you're really in trouble this time). I am unsure if this is a universal belief or confined to the ancient Middle East, but one of the earliest appearances of this idea is in Egyptian mythology, where Isis tricks Ra into giving up his true name so she can cure his snake bite, turning allowing Isis to turn herself into a Lady God Empress of the Universe.... only with fewer space marines. Either way, it is likely that figuring out the demon's name was standard practice in Jesus' time as well.
@hysterical5408
@hysterical5408 Жыл бұрын
I'll be fair, I came to a completely different conclusion I thought it was an exaggerated form of echos. The guy possessed by Legion is a cave, when he speaks his echos in the cave sound like more than one person. Therefore, their must be more than one demon inside him. I like your interpretation better, mine kind of sucks.

Nice video. One correction: the name Jezebel, which in the Masoretic text appears as Izevel, was probably pronounced Izvul or Izebul in ancient Hebrew and has nothing to do with Baal. Zebul, like in the name of Zebulun, means a prince or a judge in ancient Hebrew/Phoenician.

I mean, knowing someone's name is kind of a big deal. People can try to call you all they want, "baby," "honey," "hey you," etc. and worse, but actually calling out your full name will really get your attention. It's your hook. Your handle. It catches you. Same with a demon or a spirit.

I had a nightmare about the demon Azymondias after watching the show The Dragon Prince. I intentionally tried to forget it, but what I can remember is that there was a demon catching/trapping brother duo like in the show Supernatural, but the demon Azymondias replaced one of the brothers, trapped him in a closet and killed him. After that, he continued on with the brother, pretending to capture and trap or kill demons, but he would always kill or murder a demon, a spirit being, a human, always something to add their spirit to his own, but he was an insatiable bottomless pit and would seem to grow no stronger or more witty or helpful, only an ever widening bloody, dark pit. I woke horrified and looked up the name. I recall repeating it obsessively in my mind in the dream because it was what I needed to bind him and also to tell the hapless brother who was blinded to the fact that his brother was not actually his brother, but a demon who had murder/consumed him. D is for Dagon - A little extra on the story of Dagon, I believe he's usually just depicted as a false god, but the story has the statue broken twice, the final time with it appearing to have fallen prostrate before the ark of the covenant which, at that point was considered a strong portent and the ark ejected from their temple. (1 Samuel 5: 1 - 8) E is for Exorcism: I strongly believe that knowing an entity's name is very important. I can call you all day, but nothing gets your attention like knowing your name. F is for Fallen Angel - All fallen angels are demons in Christian demonology. ‭Jude 1:6 NIV‬ "And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling-these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day." J is for Jezebel - I was a part of a church that practiced exorcisms regularly. The idea that "there is a spirit of Jezebel" was very prevalent. I believe if you look up the word and its occurrence in the old and new testaments, you'll find clear leanings towards it not just being a flesh and blood person. When you said the story of the Nephilim is "too spicy for the Bible," that's where you're wrong. It's still in there. ‭Genesis 6:4 NIV‬ "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days-and also afterward-when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown." ‭Numbers 13:33 NIV‬ "We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”" You even reference this later at N is for Nephilim. My dad studied demonology and practiced exorcism for a large portion of his life, specifically after he left practicing the occult. I've come to understand God does not "sic" demons on people. Due to the important dichotomy created by humans having free will (we must have choice in order to actually love someone. A robot programmed to love does not truly love because it has no choice and the result is hollow and shallow) anyway, because of this, there is good and evil and it is as simple as being near God and one with God, which you will find is light, love, goodness, and truth or being separate or distant from it/Him. Instead of having demons sent upon us, we are simply left to our own devices. If we, our spirits, fight rejoining the Light of Life a.k.a. God, he allows us to live with the consequences of our own choices: darkness, brokenness, separation. It's a harsh reality. No, God is not all roses and daisies and puppy dog kisses. We are given freedom of choice and it is a dichotomy. In the end, there is no middle ground, and the consequences are harsh. I hope that you will find the truth and the Truth will set you free. I am surprised you read this far. And whether you did or not, know that God loves you and wants you to be a part of Him again. He wants you to be whole. God is love. God is Life. God is The Truth. Everything else is darkness and torture. You don't have to live in darkness. You are not unloved. And you don't have to be alone. Accept Him and He will always be there for you.

Really recommend Daemonology by King James (yeah same one who the Bible was named after) - it's basically a 'for dummies' guide on the occult of the time, a witch hunting manual and with some fascinating evidential stories from the time. It's also only about 90 pages, and actually very humorous at times!

10:00 They're are not meant to be read outloud. You're supposed to place these bowls upside down beneath the entrance door and/or in every corner of the house. Moreover, they don't always depict demons, but when they do, it's usually a random demon - not lilith or some other well-known demon. However, the text inside the bowl does mention Lilith (but not always) as part of a story that appears on every bowl. The story has a couple of different versions, but the general idea goes something like this: three angels chase Lilith to the sea to kill her, but once they caught her, they made a deal instead: she mustn’t attack houses that mention the story and their names.

In the Hebrew and Greek biblical texts, Sheol and Hades (both of which are considered “hell” are both references to the grave. The idea of a hell full of fire and brimstone comes from the term Gehenna, which was simply a place located in ancient Israel in which trash was put to burn. Gehenna had a horrible stench, and Jesus referenced this location and its contents in many of His sermons. Early Christianity adopted this idea of a burning hell and it has stuck on to the Christian tradition ever since. Hope this was fun to read! Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong! :)

If I remember correctly in some stories Lilith was the first woman, she refused to be subserviant to Adam so she got made into a demon and banished to the desert!
@mixolydia3309

A lot of those stories came later, and the part specifically about Adam having two wives started because Genesis contains two alternate stories of creation, which makes it sound like a wife for Adam is created twice! It’s really interesting how Lilith has developed into the modern day. The channel Trey the Explainer has a video about Lilith if you want to learn more, I found it fascinating.
