It all depends on the officer sitting in the foreign Office in that particular city.. In some cities they follow the rule of blocked account for students visa extension.. In some cities thr work contract or the normal account is good to go.. But as far as I can say, in Stralsund, they are little strict and they want blocked account only..

What documents are required for applying for a residence permit?

for getting resident permit after 3/6 months after arrival in Germany, you need 1) your accommodation contract 2) finances ( mostly in blocked account for Stralsund) or your part time contract (if they accept it) 3) passport 4) student certificate from university 5) your grades ( sometimes this is needed when they want to see how many credits you have completed, etc.. And sometimes they don't care) 6) photograph 7) resident permit card fees of almost 90 euros
