His main position is mostly on the wing and he can play either left wing (11) or right wing (14). He is very versatile and sometimes plays fullback (15) or even flyhalf (10) and scrumhalf (9). Where you saw him playing 7 was his earlier years in rugby 7's. He is regarded as one of the best modern era rugby players because despite his size where he is usually the smallest and lightest guys on the pitch, his defence is faultless if not ferocious, his speed breathtaking, catching the highball is supernatural considering how high he jumps and steps in any direction on a penny! He also bounces much bigger players off him when he carries the ball. Although not a first choice goalkicker, he does occasionally kick goals and can dropkick. If you listen to him being interviewed, he's very humble and quietly confident. A super role model!!

To just add more to what Gareth has said. Rugby 7's is a different code. There are 3. Rugby Union, League and then 7's. 7's basically means 7 players a side, where Union is 15 a side. League is 13 players a side. But Union is by far the most popular and oldest code of the sport.

Cheslin played several seasons in France. Just moved to Japan this season. Unfortunately, that is where the biggest money is for Pro Rugby players. France and Japan. At one point, he was told that he is too small to play Rugby. As for bumping off the tackles. Timing in a tackle is just as important as technique. He uses his acceleration to spoil the defenders timing. The numbers work #1 to #3 are the front row, two Props and a Hooker in the middle. #4 and #5 are the Locks. #6 and #7 are Flank Forwards and #8 is the 8th man. #9 is the Scrumhalf. #10 is the Flyhalf (closest analogy to American Footballs quaterback). #12 and #13 are the Centres. #11 and #14 are the Wings. #15 is Fullback. He started in Rugby 7’s. That is why he is sometimes shown in other numbers. Cheslin can play 10, 11, 14 qnd 15.

I can tell you as a matter of fact, playing rugby in the suburb we live in, means that you play a very very very hard game or you fall out... there are very strong contenders in the sport throughout South Africa, but I would never say that our town is an easy town to play in or for, not even on school level... Very proud of you Cheslin! Salute!
@the_katman21816 ай бұрын
Wherever you see him playing without the protective headgear, he's playing a different sport - Rugby Sevens. That's where's he's mostly worn number 7. In normal 15-man Rugby Union he's mostly a wing (11 or 14, depending on the side), and sometimes a fullback (15). Although in at least one of these clips he was playing at flyhalf (number 10) for his French club and took on the kicking duties too, and he's even played scrumhalf before (9). So an incredibly versatile player.

FYI - Kolbe plays wing typically, which always have the numbers 11 or 14. He normally plays with the number 11. He does play at full back for his club sides on occasion which is number 15. The number 7 you're seeing confuses things slightly as that is when he is playing Sevens. There is a form of Rugby called Rugby Sevens. Where the teams have 7 players per side. This is a lesser followed form of rugby and is seen by the rugby nations as somewhat of a development pathway for future players. The league travels around the world and each weekend event is a tournament in itself where teams play each other for 7 minutes each half and play 4 or 5 games the first day and the same the second ending in a final. In 15 man a side rugby, the number 7 position is flank and CK is far too small for that position.

The times he's wearing 7 is when he is playing 7's rugby (7 a side). Some players play both 7's and the regular 15 man game. 11 & 14 are left and right wing respectively in the 15 man version. He'd be a terrible 7 in the 15 man game, especially in SA as the 7 is the blindside flanker (generally the bigger of the two flankers although both are big units).

Lot of players from the South Africa choose to play overseas because of more money. A springbok would happily play for a bottom tier team in asia or europe because the pay is a lot more. South african clubs cannot afford the insane salaries you can get overseas. A lot of the guys come from poorer backgrounds so they tend to send money back to their families.

Super Rugby is New Zealand, Australia and 2 pasifc nations that consists of 12 teams. Japan A League is the second highest paid Rugby tournament in the world with many of the worlds top players in that league. English Premier Rugby league is the top England rugby competition.
