The problem is middle-class families risks a lot of time and money for their kids to have a good future, that's why the parents are hard on kids. Work hard now get paid later. Well, Mitch got paid. 11million paid. I think sometimes the pressure is needed as kids don't know any better. You can hear Mitch said "I don't care" in the car. With that kind of attitude, it's hard to go pro unless you have someone to push you to your limits.

Then tell your parents....not youtube. You're playing AAA because of your parents! Chances are you're not going anywhere , besides a men's beer league. So, basically, your parents invested thousands of dollars, with zero return! Be grateful, your parents cared that much about you, and put you into organized sports! I bet you went to multiple tournaments, stayed, in a lot of hotels, and made a lot of life long friends! You probably picked up a lot of life lessons and morals along the way....next time you whine about how hard it is playing "AAA" think about all the kids that can't play hockey because their parents can't afford it!

@jamiebate90192 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. There's a reason Mitch is a top 5 scorer in the league and most people have heard of Mikey mcleod. As unfortunate as it is intense pressure from parents is highly correlated with professional success. Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, Floyd Mayweather are extreme examples. I'm making an assumption here but I would think even at lower levels of athletics a player's skill has a high correlation with parental intensity. Negative reinforcement used for behavioural conditioning stays with a kid, especially coming from a parent or teacher, and is a much stronger factor in success than positive reinforcement used as a reward system.

@@jamiebate9019 Mitch is a top player during the season because of his talent. He crumbles under pressure in the playoffs because of his father. My heart breaks to see little Mitch. Fathers can be so destructive to a child’s psyche. This makes me want to fight for Mitch even more. My children had an abusive father and they still suffer as adults from his hurtful words and expectations. I’m sure Mitch loves his Dad and his Dad loves him, but this sweet kid needed some love and encouragement.
@bonnypowers9377 Жыл бұрын
What? Buddy did you hear his dad in the car ? I mean the fucking kids dad was spending 18 grand a year so the fucker could make the nhl. He’s 12 years old. Not a 2 year old. I’d venture to say there’s lots of little kids that would suck the hine teet just to get their father to spend that much time and spend that much money on them. Not to mention actually be invested in the thing they are doing. Don’t act like the mother fucker had a tough childhood.
@rosanne787 Жыл бұрын
@@bonnypowers9377 There are many forms of parenting. This is abuse. Mitch became the player he is because of natural talent. Whatever his fathers motives were, treating a child this way is not necessary. Because Mitch is currently riding the wave of success, everyone sees this video and congratulates his fathers ‘tough love’. What about the times of doubt. The days of no points and social media scorn. Mitch deserved love and total acceptance from his father. No one will ever convince me that his fathers cruelty made him who he is today. Mitch was born great.
@bonnypowers9377 Жыл бұрын
@@rosanne787 Mitch scored like 6 goals a game his whole life sweetheart. There were no bad games. I’m not congratulating the tough love. I’m saying there wasn’t tough love. His dad probably woke up and made him eggs. Guy lived in a heated house. I mean he had a father that was always there for him physically and didn’t beat the crap out of him. This whole mental abuse stuff is taking a bit of a turn at this point. Like Mitch is already soft as a pillow. I’d say his dad didn’t go hard enough on him. There’s a line to cross. Mitch’s dad probably didn’t come anywhere near that line. I mean he probably bought him new sticks every year. His dad spent 18 grand a year on hockey. Mitch had a good childhood and I guarantee he would say the same thing. He was given every opportunity in the world. It’s natural talent but there’s a Mitchell Marner in China with the same natural talent. He just isn’t going to be given the opportunity to play hockey 5 times a week. His parents are the reason he got the opportunity to do that and I would say it was awfully nice of them to sacrifice that much time and money into their kid. That won’t be happening for our children in Canada. 25 year olds in Canada won’t be spending 18 grand a year on their kids to play hockey in 10 or 15 years. We won’t be able to afford it. Which is unfortunate.
@rosanne787 Жыл бұрын
@@bonnypowers9377 I hear you. My parents couldn’t afford to put any of us in hockey. I couldn’t afford to put my kids on hockey. I’ve been poor my entire life. I can still feel compassion for a person who is sensitive and tender, which I believe Mitch to be. The way his father spoke to him made me cringe. No innocent child deserves to be spoken to that way. To this day, Mitch knows his Dad will ask him ‘why didn’t you score on those first two tries to tie the record?’ I guess Mitch has come to terms with this. And I would imagine he loves his Dad. I just think that life is too short not to be kind and compassionate.

My brother played soccer and basketball and I would hear parents from those times. My sister did girls hockey, dancing and rugby in the summer as quirt and the same type of parents would be yelling at their kids during practice, games and dance practice.. If the kids sports wants to do something about it than creating guidelines and have authority figures walking around among the crowds is the only legal and realistic way to shut abusing parent's out.

I played AAA for a year (just a bit older than Mitch here) and it was a very disorienting. My skillset was a bit lopsided, e.g., I was one of the best and fastest skaters on the team but my stick-handling was below average (basically I skated a bit too fast when i got the puck; years later I learned Brett Hull had a similar problem coming up and had to train himself to put the breaks on whenever he got the puck). I was being cultivated as a defensive forward and a good penalty killer. The problem was, the parents of several of the other kids were obsessed with their individual stats rather than the overall performance of the team (didn't matter if we lost as long as little Jason or whoever had a good scoring record to show off to the Junior scouts). Some of these kids were Pavel Bure types who would only hussle in the opposing team's end. I remember being blamed for some kid not scoring every game and this kid's dad talking shit to my dad. It was kind of nasty. Anyway, nobody from that team went beyond Junior B to my knowledge.

This is literally what it is like, not just for Mitch but for any AAA player or junior A player. All of the best players have psychotic parents - ones that yell, scream, swear, or walk out of games. It’s the disappointment afterwards that is the worst - hockey parents are so passive aggressive. Good is never good enough. Sometimes, like in these cases, even excellence isn’t enough. 1 goal a game isn’t enough. 2 goals a game isn’t enough. I know from personal experience.

Whether a kid plays hockey for fun and/or aspires to play college or pro, I sincerely believe this sport brings out the best in him or her. Hockey teaches kids structure, hard work, develop thick skin, compassion for others, and brotherhood (and of course sisterhood for the girls). Also, hockey players seem to be the most well mannered, respectful, athletes and humble too.

Oh so crazy! We all know parents can cross the line no question! But when you are investing 10s of thousands of dollars a year at that level people want to make sure that the investment(kids) :( are actually out there playing not out for a Sunday skate

Found Paul Marner’s burner account. Kids are not a fucking investment. This kind of parenting tends to cause kids to burn out more than help them. I know because I’ve seen it first hand with teammates.

Funny thing hockey paid the a large portion of the salary of Wendy, Peter and everyone else at the CBC (along with taxpayers) so complaining about cost is ironic

I guess this is what happens when your son is going nowhere but straight to men's league
@connorbrechbill65162 жыл бұрын
Haha that would make for some good schadenfruede wouldn’t it. Sadly no. Mitch is in the NHL and is arguably a top 5 player at his position. Worse, Paul Marner made an absolute ass of himself during the contract negotiations when Mitch’s ELC was finished.
@connorbrechbill6516 Жыл бұрын
Sadly no. Both of these kids were first round picks and Marner himself is one of the top wingers in the NHL. That said, Marner is as good as he is because he’s Mitch Marner. Not because of the pressure Paul Marner put him under. Kid had the talent to make the league regardless.

The parents have ruined these kids - look at Marner's immaturity as a pro, which i guess is better than Macleod, who is up on sexual charges.

absolutely. They are the complete opposite of the Walter Gretzky philosophy, which produced the most talented and most humble superstar in hockey.
