Absolutely. You know, he did HARD work in Sweden to earn that goal. McCarty was on his way out in 95 due to his lack of finesse skill, and I am telling you I have never seen a pro athlete apply himself like this late in his career, just to go back to the basics of puck handling skill. His work ethic and training in the off season in Sweden during these years brought McCarty back to the wings in a meaningful way...but he also introduced a player by the name of Holmstrom from Sweden. What a player. Eternal.

Summer of 97, I met Darren McCarty at an autograph signing at some sports shop in Oakland County. They had a big TV in the corner of the store that was showing game 4. When the moment his goal came on the screen, he stood up and watched it with oohs and ahhs. It was equal parts hilarious and amazing! I was 10 at the time and there is no better age to experience a championship. You're old enough to realize they won but young enough to still think the guys are superheros.

Shanahan made such a big difference. He’d never played on a Stanley Cup winner before nor had he ever been to the finals, but he’s a player that was exactly what they needed and one that was built for playoff hockey. Tough, talented and competitive. Detroit had this “skilled but soft” rep before and the Shanahan deal coupled with the March brawl with Colorado, really sent a message that enough was enough

I despised Detroit back then...now I just have ultimate respect,& appreciation for both teams,& the rivalry. I still say 2002 Wings are the best team I've ever seen,& 2001 Avs are #2. Teams in the post salary cap era, don't even compare to those pre cap Wings,Avs,& Devil's. They just can't have the same depth,& star power...you can't cuz of the cap.

This might seem like a minor thing, but Yzerman, hacking at Lindros' stick at 44:44, just embodies the dedication he and the team made. Stevie didn't just casually try to knock the stick away. He played like he was angry and was in no mood to let Lindros do anything. I love that moment.

In reality, the Red wings should have swept the Avs in 4 games. In game 1, Detroit out-shot Colorardo 35 to 19 and out-played them in every aspect (similar to all the other Detroit wins in the series) only to have Patrick Roy steal the show as he would normally do and give his team a win with a .971 save percentage. Joe Sakic even stated in a press conference that they got lucky in game 1. It very likely could have been 12 wins in a row with Detroit sweeping the Ducks & Flyers. Detroit had high level talent ( as did the Avs and Flyers) but they won with a smothering system, the "left wing lock," which they played to perfection.

now if only today's Red Wings had the balls like the 96-97 & 97-98 teams did

I think it has less to do with "balls" as it has to do with injuries to veterans and too much youth and inexperience. They still have a strong nucleus in Zetteberg, Datzyuk and Kromwall, however they lack depth and experience everywhere else. If Zetteberg, Dats, Franzen and Howard can stay off the IR for extended periods of time, they should be able to finish the season better than in past years (like higher than 6th seed, as high as 4th). They are not in contention for a Cup run as of yet, just not enough pieces in place for that, but they could make some noise in the playoffs and possibly squeak through to the ECF's if the bounces go their way. Today's game is nearly completely different than it was back in the mid-late 90's.
