As a parent of an 11 year old here are my thoughts: Skates - the most important IMO. He spends 10+ hours a week on the ice, sometimes 20+ so having a pair of skates that he can wear all day and have zero discomfort is the key. Currently on the 2nd year of JetSpeed FT4. I leased them for $330 at the beginning of the season last year and then bought them outright for the additional $70 to get to the full retail price of $400 (today they cost $450 for the same skate). If he needed a bigger size, I would pay the same amount. Sticks - find one you like. I've been picking up more of the Trigger 6 pro for $130. Great deal. It was good enough for him when it was $220, it's still good enough for him now. Move your feet, get to the scoring areas, score more goals. It's not the stick that gets you there. Helmet - obviously important. Just make sure it fits right. Just because it is more $$$ doesn't mean it is safer/better. Just go get it fit properly. Other protective - middle of the road is what we usually go for. Always looking for barely used stuff at about half the cost of new. Gloves you want to get new. Hope this helps someone out there! Don't worry about getting the best of everything. Just get stuff that you can afford. Too many times I see parents freaking out about buying their kid the latest stick, thinking that is what is going to make the difference. If you can afford, then great good for you. But if you can't don't beat yourself up over buying food or a stick.

Sorry..but your shipping theory doesn't hold water. We are shipping sneakers from China to all major cargo destinations in the world at in principle the same cost per box of shoes. The difference between Cape Town, Sidney, Rotterdam, Oslo and New York os roughly 3 cents american. Also looking at distances on a map insted of the globe is somewhat misleading. The US isn't that much further away from China than Russia. It's closer than Finland for sure😉 It's all about how much the consumer is willing to spend combined with local taxes. No more, no less. Beyond basic supply and demand concepts, there's an imagery in certain places that higher cost equates higher quality and this is seen fairly frequently in certain places in the US, therefore to add to the perception that it's better than the previous model, then the product should also cost more

I use to work for a big brand. The shipping is the same for Europe and N-A. The real factor is the culture of always making more money, and retailers are more greedy in N-A. Second factor could be labor but its not that much on the final price. Its all about greediness and customer buying because they have less affordable options.

I import from Asia every month, the prices are absolutely insane now. A 40ft container used to cost me $3300 GBP and now costs over $15000. That cost has to be absorbed somewhere, ultimately the end user. Another factor is the cost of the middle man. At every stage, someone takes their cut! In the UK for example, a hockey shop will get their products from the UK agent, CCM or Warrior near Swindon, Bauer up in the North of England for example. Stick made in Asia. Shipped to CCM HQ in Montreal or their warehousing wherever it is. Then shipped to the agent. Then shipped to the retailer. Then purchased by the end user. At every stage, the price goes up!

Willing to pay up to about $1000 for skates, I expect them to last 5+ years... especially with the removable runners available now. Just recently bought Alex Pietrangelos used pro-stock 2xPros for about $230 though, haven't tried them out yet but interested to see if buying used is worth the savings. Sticks, I will pay anything for the right stick, but I've found sweet spot is $200-$300 for me just getting previous years tech. After trying many of the Bauer sticks, I've found CCM is a much better fit for me. My snapshots are flying with the FT5 Pro ($220 used pro-stock). I expect my sticks to last a few months(3-5 months to a year), anything less than 3 months and it's very unlikely I purchase again. The lower the durability, the higher the performance has to be for me to even consider using it again. If my Ft5 pro only lasted 3 months, I'd buy another because performance is UNREAL. Hyperlite I would not buy again. Hyperlite lost it's pop after about 5-6 weeks of play for me. I feel like the gear is changing and players are adapting to those changes instead of the other way around. Its much harder to figure out what gear and configs work for you as a player today, because everything is much more complicated than it was 10 years ago. Different skate profiles, different hollows, different skate construction (1 piece, 2 piece), different sticks (flex, flex point, curve, lightness). We need some new stores that allow us to test out different tech without having to buy it. It's just too expensive to buy and try all this stuff.

A lot, if not most, of Chinese products ship by sea from the East and South East coast, which is closer to the US than the UK. Part of the cost is due to staff costs within the target country, both the wages for Bauer, CCM etc, but also shop wages and overheads. Then there is demand, low demand can mean higher prices.

I have CCM rib core. It was $330 retail, but it was last year’s model. 30% off. It was roughly $240 after the discount. My speed skates for the long track is way more expensive, the boots were $650 after tax and shipping, the blades were $950 after tax and shipping.

I just purchased my first pair of pro level skates (ASV-Pro). I usually buy mid level skates and they last for several years (3 to 4), but as I have gotten older I wanted something that will be more comfortable, and these are the most comfortable skate I have ever worn. I paid 1000.00 US for the skates. Stick wise, I usually wait for the new generation of stick to come out, then I buy the previous generation pro level stick at around 150 US. I usually get new sticks each year.

From the US! I happily will spend $1000+ on skates, but I will use them until they’re busted apart, currently shooting for 4-5 years out of my AS3 Pros. My next pair will be custom. Sticks are interesting. I save my money throughout the entire year, and buy sticks at the Pittsburgh Penguins Equipment Sale. Lightly used sticks for $75/stick, or new for $150. It’s a gamble on the used ones, but I’ve had decent luck. Bought 7 sticks over the last two years, broke two. Just broke a John Marino Warrior LX Pro this morning.

I just bought my first more expensive skates CCM Ribcor 90K for $390 and it was more then I wanted but I am happy with them before I had skates around $80-100. For a stick I pay around $100. Just for comparison in Czechia the CCM FT5 Pro is $325, Bauer AG5NT is $387 ($345 with Bauer Card).

Before all that "sanctions" appeared, I would lurk ebay for pro-stock skates (unused, old stock). It might took months, years, but this way I've managed to catch a pair of Brad Richard's CCM U+ pro for $325 and Eric Burgdoerfer's CCM Jet Speed for $350. Love them. Can't prove, but to me it's pretty clear, that pro-stock skates are made from different materials with different technology and different quality control. They last.

The carbon fiber true one piece stick definitely changed the game. Being able to load the stick and produce rockets from a wrist or snap shot is amazing. Combined with the speed of the game seems to have cut down on the amount of slap shots taken (at least at the pro level).

I'm comfortable with following prices: senior ice hockey skates (for me) 250$ youth hockey skates (for my son) 100$ senior hockey stick (for me) 100$ youth hockey stick (for my son) 50$ How much I actually paid? This summer, after breaking my 10 year old skates, I paid 300Euros for 20/21 season skates (Bauer Supreme 3S) + blades + profiling (~100 Euros). Couldn't get anything cheaper in the quality I wanted. For my stick I paid 100Euros, as it was on sale (Bauer Vapor 1X lite). Yesterday I bough new stick for my son for 70 Euros. And today after practice he said that he needs new skates. I checked the prices and they start at 150Euros. The problem is that the second hand market is almost not existent here. I loved Canada, where I bough big part of my equipment second hand.

I've had my pair of ccm skates for around a year and a few months and they've done me well, they were around 300-400 us dollars so not top of the line. My sticks I bought on a sail for around 100-110 us dollars each so again, not top of the line. I personally don't feel the need to buy top of the line equipment every year as that can amount to over 1000 us dollars easily. I also have two younger brothers that play ice hockey and because of that, the price of all 3 of us playing hockey would be much too expensive. Overall, your performance will not be affected by the equipment you use but by many other contributing factors like practice and mentality. For context, I play AA hockey in Canada.

I’ve had my Vapor X500 for about 5 or 6 years, skating twice a week. Paid $300 for them. I’m looking into a new pair and my budget is about $350. I think I paid $120 each for my current sticks (STX Surgeon 3.1). One has lasted like 3 years, the other one broke after a year or so. I think $150 is about how much I would spend on a new stick.

Stick Sherwood T120 (old, but top model) new 76$ still holds after 3 years of beer league. Skates 320$ Vapor X2.7 new on release 3 years without problem(just need to replace steel) I play defense and block numerous shots and bang sticks everywhere , I guess I am lucky. (Slovakia , middle Europe)

i usually buy "new" stuff after it has been out a few yrs....the technology is still good and companies are trying to get rid of inventory.....if people stop buying the new stuff as soon as it hits the stores, the makers will have to lower their prices....pros get their stuff given to them so they don't care about prices but we want good stuff too...amateur players cannot have it both ways

I'm no economist, but it seems like there are far more end-customers in the US or Canada than Finland (to use your example). How aren't the sheer bulk numbers enough to offset costs? I think it's because the manufacturers know US players are more likely to pay more. It's flashy, it's new, pro players are playing with stuff dressed as the newer shiny stuff.

skates- about 850. I had my Apx2s from freshman yesr of hs til senior year of college. Sticks? I wanna say 250 but i always buy the top of the line (Playing d2 in ACHA, 14th ranked in the central division). I absolutely can not play with a lower tier stick as the weight of it feels like i have a concrete stick in my hands + the effect that has on stick handling and just moving the stick around in general. I really liked the Geos "5 sided tapered" shaft and you will not get the features, feel, or anything like that. Usually ill go through 3-5 sticks in a season. So far im at two.

Missed the biggest factor: What the market is willing to pay. Big monopolistic companies, like current day sports companies leverage psychological factors like pro sponsorship and other online influencers to inflate the perceived value (not actual) of their products and of their yearly "upgrades". This influence has a greater effect in n.american markets, especially around sports. Check the price difference between other products made in Asia. Clothing for example costs more in Russia and the UK than n.america. when one or very few companies control the market, they can manipulate prices more easily over the actual cost to bring to market. A new smaller player could enter the market at a lower price point and still make a profit, but the large ones will quickly buy them out or block their market access at the distributor and retail level. We've seen this in hockey manufacturers over the last 2 decades.

Bought a new pair of CCM TACKS AS-V ICE HOCKEY SKATES - INTERMEDIATE size 6.5 with Step steel black blades for my son. The skates are $669.00. plus an additional $50.00 for a pair of SuperFeet insoles to replace the ultra thin piece of foam CCM calls a insole. plus taxes $63.27 that totals $782.27. Do I think Hockey prices are getting out of hand ABSOLUTELY!!!! and next year he will be one size bigger which then puts him in a senior size skate so add additional $108.00 on top of that. Can you tell me the price of one ship container from wietnam to usa or to europe? Difference is less than 2-3.000 dollars/ container, often less. in one ship container that is 40 tons of equipment. simple math tells you that transportation costs are less than a few dollars by 1 peace of equipment. the prices are so mad because of inflation of euro and dollars that are beeing printed without control fir the last 10-20 years. best regards

You've made the naive assumption that the retail price is directly related to the costs of manufacture/handling/shipping/endorsements/advertising. Wrong. Price is set as high as the consumer will be willing to pay. That amount will be arrived at via focus groups and other research.

600 dollars for skates, 200 dollars for sticks. I play 2-4 times a week in beer league. Skates are important to me and will more than likely last me a long time. When it comes to hockey sticks, i want a stick that i feel i will be able to perform with without breaking the bank. A stick usually lasts me 1-2 years. Obviously they can break unexpectedly and the pop goes away after about a year.

This is an eye opener to how inflation in the USA is out of control, when the pandemic caused a shortage of supply middle suppliers just raised the price to keep profit margins as high if not higher then before pandemic. Here is the new problem, once prices have increased there is no reversals. It’s gonna take years for more competitive manufacturers to help level off prices.

I generally buy a couple of high-end CCM sticks a year (pro models) and they're usually around 225 USD each. $350 for skates because they are durable and should last longer than normal shoes so it makes sense to be a decent amount more expensive than shoes and for sticks, I think $100 is very reasonable because the sticks now have improved significantly compared to a decade or so ago however, I think they are getting more fragile and $200 or more is far too much for possibly only lasting a few games.

Are skates made to be less durable these days? Like the auto industry's planned obsolescence? Most people here seem to expect their skates will last 5-6 years. I bought a pair of Microns 25 years ago for about $250 (top of the line, Pavel Bure used them) that I played in for 15 years. Last 10 years they were in storage, but I dusted them off last month and while there was some dry rotting (some of the cosmetic exterior plastic fell off), they are still usuable. I'm so bummed I"ll have to spend $500 for way less durable skates.

Cars have definitely progressed and they could make cars that last for decades, but commercially I think the peak reliablity period was late 90s to early 20s, which might coincide with skates durability (likely coincedental). I still have a 98 Camry and 2001 Acura CL in my family and they just keep ticking with no end in sight. Nowadays there are more electronic parts that can break down and the cost of repairs is through the roof. It cost me $5K to change the headlights on my 2019 beemer. With turbo engines becoming more prevalent to hit the flawed green benchmarks, the problem of reliability will only get worse. The technology is there to make very reliable cars today, but that's not what's being produced, for good financial reasons.

My last pair of skates were Mission Amp 7s which lasted for ~20 years (probably closer to 6-7 of actual skating, they've been sitting since as I'm only just now getting back into skating). After picking them back up recently they literally fell apart while skating (fair enough, they're that old) so I decided to upgrade. Being older now I could afford to go high end so I went with a pair of CCM Jetspeed FT4 Pros which actually proved very difficult to get in my country, but persistence paid off in the end. Had to effectively spend the equivalent of $1,060 USD for them but given how long I know they've going to last I don't have a problem with that. Impressions are that they're so unbelievably light, the Stepsteel is a huge improvement and the energy transfer overall is amazing. They make everything feel so effortless. Obviously so much stiffer than what I'm used to, and for now they're noticeably less comfortable vs. my old Missions, but really it's an apples and oranges comparison so that point is moot. I expect they'll feel more comfortable as I break them in further and possibly get a second heat mould done. Also just in love with how they look. They'll probably last me another ten years at least, so I'm stoked. Haven't picked up a stick yet (only just starting to learn to play hockey, previously have just skated for recreation) but probably looking more entry level for the rest of my gear for now, as the chance of me being a hotshot hockey player any time in the near future is extremely low.

Stop buying retail bs sticks at $359 or even $399. Just grab pro stock twig at $160, gloves at $140 or pants at $140. More protective, durable (sometimes), made witg better quality and feel like u are a part of an NHL or whatever league it came from. Simple.

I'm sorry, but your understanding of the US market and economy is completely off. And supply and demand. Let's start with supply and demand. The US market is completely flooded with almost any and all products available in the world... Electronic, food, medicine, clothing, sporting equipment, autos. Name it, there is plenty of supply of most markets available. The amount of supply and efficiency of shipping is not even close to why there is a high cost. Our shipping cost is a small portion of the overall cost of a product. The reason prices are higher in the US is that companies are taking advantage of the US consumer base's larger disposable income. The US has the largest amount of disposable income after taxes. So we are suckers and willing to pay more for vacations (flights, hotels, rental cars.), medicine and healthcare, schools, and with that sporting equipment. We do not pay much for fuel, food, and electronics, and most taxes are relative to the world. We basically pay for staus.

You're talking about the price of hockey equipment. Trying to justify the cost. Yiu keep saying "the USA". You do realize that hockey in Canada is like "footbooool" in Britain. Most professional grade equipment is made in Canada. Take your best 20 year old prospect, and we'll send a mediocre 10 year old kid over there to school you. You have no idea what hockey means in Canada. If you can't afford it, then don't play. I own a lot of firearms and shoot many different disciplines. You gotta pay to play.

Personally i feel like hockey equipment in America is high to keep a certain look to the sport and to keep certain undesirable’s out the sport or at least keep their number low. I mean a huge selling point of hockey equipment is “carbon fiber” i cannot think of a more abundant resource than carbon. Or soft inexpensive gels liners for molding. Not to mention football equipment is around the same price if not more expensive but yet Damn near every public hugh school has a school sponsored football team but rarely do you see the same for hockey AND lacrosse in America the last things they want is for hockey to turn into football or basketball but because its a native american sport its inevitable that you will see more and more colored people playing it.
