I was a 7-year-old kid in Australia when I heard this blasting on a car radio outside our school playground. I thought it was the BADDEST thing ever back then. Had never heard anything like it. I still think it bangs pretty hard.

I was 16 going to 17 and it was talked about by all my friends, saying this son called: "Here's Johnny" that it was sick!!! It must of stayed on the Australian tracklist for most of 1995 if not the whole year! Played so many times via RAGE and Video Hits! It's still unique and a piece of art, nothing like it to this day.

my father used to have a car that he'd fixed up really nicely, I can't remember what kind of model it was but he had the body professionally repaired and he installed leather car seats with hydraulic's that made the seats adjust (its more common these days but back then it was the mark of a platinum car) he also had really good bass speakers installed in the boot and he would blast this so loud that the whole car would shake, I loved it so frigging much I was so devastated when my father sold the car, he got a pretty penny for it but I think my father would have sacrificed me for that car lol, a few years later he saw it being resold on facebook marketplace and went to go buy it back, it was really beaten up, somebody had taken to it with a mallet, dad was so devastated lmao

We had a school project of sorts - we had to sing a current 'pop' song in front of the school. My group chose this, but we were quickly shut down, since the lyrics were... too sparse.

It's a mystery... and Australia is still trying to figure it out. How did "Here's Johnny!" by Hocus Pocus, a relentless blast of 'ardcore techno noise, go to Number One for 6 weeks?!!?! Naturally you are thinking it was because of the Jack Nicholson sample from “The Shining.” But you know what? Although I clearly remember hundreds of comments back in the day from friends or family whenever they stumbled upon it, along the lines of “what is this shit?!?!!”, I don’t remember anyone ever saying “bah! They just ripped that off “The Shining.” And I had friends who would routinely go “you know he ripped this off from Queen” EVERY TIME “Ice Ice Baby” came on the radio! So you know they totally would! I mean, I’m sure some of the older DJs knew, but us kids, teenagers and young adults? We didn’t have any idea. It wasn’t so easy being a movie geek in 90s Australia. It wasn’t as though “The Shining” was played every year at Christmas. I asked one friend of mine, a film-geek, who now does movie reviews online, and even he wasn’t sure he recognised the sample back then. I wrote a Facebook post asking if anyone did know back then, was aware it was Jack Nicholson. I got 6 likes. I do not know how to read that data.
