Hogwarts Legacy PS5 Graphics Analysis - A True Next-Gen Experience?

Hogwarts Legacy might not be the best looking game on the market, but it’s still a solid adventure with plenty to love. The environments in particular look great - thanks to beautiful skies, densely packed areas, and accurately lit indoors.
In a similar vein, shadows and reflections look great as well - thanks to the use of ray tracing. Sure, there are some apparent flaws with the presentation as well such as robotic animations and the occasional loading but when you look at the bigger picture those problems don’t really affect one’s enjoyment in any particular way.

UE5 works fine on last gen, even on Switch, see Fortnite. Obviously not with same graphics settings. Hogwarts just was to deep in development by the time 5 released. But maybe in the future they will update it, they did with Fortnite. Enough money should be around 💟

There have only been 32 million PS5 units sold compared to 130 million PS4 units sold. Game developers want to sell more games and when the total addressable market of PS5 is less than a third of PS4, the studio will want to make it cross-gen. Gone are the days when we will see a studio like Crytek making Crysis which is meant for only the most powerful present-day hardware to run on. Also, my RX 6800 struggles with UE5, getting 40 fps on ultra at 1440p. The PS5 is probably going to run UE5 on low-medium @ 1080p and 30 fps.

The biggest con for me is the facial animation. I get flashbacks to Mass Effect Andromeda's dead-eyed NPCs every time anyone talks. Their mouths are moving, but all the minute facial movements that go along with it--particularly with the eyes--aren't present, so they all just look like animatronics delivering canned speeches.

What frame rate are people getting with uncapped on? Specifically for Fidelity RT, Balanced, and fidelity (non-RT). I don’t care much for performance modes on single player games. So far I played balanced mode and it looks good but want to use RT mode, and the game won’t let me switch to it. It forces me to reboot the game and when I do it says “graphics mode restored to default Performance” when it reboots.

No. Uncapped balance mode 40 fps ish smoothed with vrr requires a hdmi 2.1. Fedelity 30 fps and performance mode for 60 fps on any 4k display.

I'm playing it in balanced mode and it looks great. Granted, I am playing on a monitor with a 144Hz refresh rate with a boost up to 168 Hz at 120fps. While I've noticed the visual issues mentioned above, I've seen so few of them that it's not adversly affecting my gaming esperience. This is my first open world game, and I'm loving it.

I don’t think it’s surprising at all that they are using UE4 and not UE5. The game has been in development for like 6 years and to move all that over to UE5 would have been a big, and unnecessary, undertaking. Great game though and they really knocked it out of the park with this one. 25 hours in and already one of the best open world games I’ve played in recent memory aside from Elden Ring.

@@Mike49503 Elden ring is a better game for multiple tangible reasons, but that doesn't mean hogwarts isn't a fantastic game. I'd give hogwarts a solid 9.0, it really is a great game worth every penny. Elden ring however, was a game of a caliber and quality that nobody had experienced before. They absolutely NAILED the exploration, paired with EXTREMELY in-depth gearing and character builds. Elden ring can be played so many different ways story-wise AND character build-wise, its honestly not even comparable to hogwarts. The average playthrough can easily be 100 hours or more. There are probably 20x more enemy types environments, and bosses in elden ring, than hogwarts. This difference is actually so vast that mentioning it with words isn't going to fully capture. Elden ring is rightfully a golden standard for how to enamor and engulf a player in an immersive open world. Hogwarts appeals to many non-gamers in a way that elden ring cannot due to it's relative simplicity and ease. If you are somebody who plays a lot of video games you will likely fall in love with elden ring, if you are more casual, you might like hogwarts better .

I think the game looks amazing on performance mode. Excellent game. I will say there are occasional bugs, as per most open world games but I am sure patching will come. Outside of God of War and Horizon it has some of the best looking graphics I have seen environmentally.

I don't know, man. Even RedDead 2 feels better in terms of graphics. The game is just hollow to me. Exploring Hogwarts is a fun part, but its charm quickly fades as you keep playing. The characters are poorly written, the npcs, which are not involved in the story, are robot-like and glitching all around the place, the plot is also quite bad. So many little details could've been made better, but they, unfortunatelly, have not. Overall, the world is partly fun to watch but not fun to interact with. It feels like none of player's actions are having any consiquences whatsoever.

The entire Performance mode is just ugly. I normally opt for higher framerate modes versus high quality modes. But here in this game Performance mode just dosent look good, the shadows are basically stripped away entirely, the resolution is dynamic and can tank at times, the skin and cloth effects are made barebones, particle effects are turned way down. And to make it even worse it dosent hold 60 fps all the time, so the one redeeming factor of using the mode is made pointless. I find that the fidelity with RT mode is the best to look at and most stable framerate (which is veryyy rare)

I don’t know why people keep getting this so wrong but there are no ray traced reflections on Hogwarts Legacy console version. It uses SSR with a rather low cutoff point . This is so obvious when you move the camera up and down. Even mirror reflections look to use Low quality SSR and not ray tracing. Only ray traced ambient occlusion and ray traced shadows are on console in ray traced fidelity mode. The shadows can look good but can often look slightly off in relation to the light source. A performance review just on PS5 when it is also on PC and Xbox is rather silly and pointless.

@positive vibe i just tried this on my i9 9850k pc with 64km ram and 3080..and also played it on my ps5. Its night and day difference BUT...BUT... the inconsistently in the frame rate regardless of settings ..is pretty bad and the fact that there is no full screen mode on pc on release - windowed and and windowed full screen. Even with my pc the game jumps around like crazy in the village. Badly needs a patch, full screen mode. Lower tier PC's would have frame rate hitching ontop of it

But outside of different performance options, nothing about it is next-gen (specifically the visuals and gameplay mechanics)-by any means. This video is slightly misleading as far as how well the game looks and how much you can actually do in it. This game is amazing in terms of charm, variety, arch-building, visual integrity, and exploration. It is quite literally a next-gen experience. I can uncap frame rate and get about 50-65 fps on the balanced mode (only available with HDMI 2.1 120hz displays), I can play at 120Hz, and have a high resolution mode at over 1800p with around 43-55 fps. For all intensive purposes, this is the pinnacle of current-gen (ps5/series X, as next gen is no longer the correct term since this generation has been out for over 2 years). Your subjectivity is without any base, objectively this game correctly approaches established lore, effective decision making, vast exploration, and a narrative that effectively impacts lore without undermining established lore in the “future” book and movie plots. In almost all vidoes I've seen this game, it looks like the games doesn't have proper hdr support. It feels like I'm looking at a playstation in hdr mode but the game doesn't support it properly. Colors are washed out and there is hardly any contrast, also game is overly lit

That's the RDR2 delusion at play here, at launch it was the best looking game ever and 2 years later better looking games that hold up better to close scrutiny and have more convincing effects, lightning, textures, geometry etc... were released on last gen consoles (TLOU2 for example), ever since, CP2077, R&C, HFW etc... have released and look so much better than RDR2, the world has moved on and only RDR2 fans refuse to see it lol

This game looks way better than red dead redemption 2, and the Witcher. I wish red dead was using unreal engine 5, cuz it’s most definitely miles ahead of that crappy game engine from rockstar. And not to mention it doesn’t pull a crap load of resources from the consoles hardware. Unreal engine 5 so far needs to be the standard for triple A games. Of course Sony’s exclusives are still on top graphically, but these other studios should convert to this engine.

John Linneman of Digital Foundry, in a really weird and unusual tirade, went on Twitter to bash the game and say he hates the franchise and open world games in general. Which is odd because he covers other open world games just fine. He said ‘it will be covered’ but he has a true distaste that he has to do so and apparantly Digital Foundry are firmly in the Hogwarts bad camp. Disappointing to hear from them.

Lmao what? The protagonist of forespoken has no evolution. She is just always a snarky douche even when major plot moments are happening. The game also has more pop ins and crude textures. Hogwarts is not only going to be a better experience in gameplay but for narrative as well. There may be a few that disagree and that’s fine but forespoken is an inferior game in terms of side quests, narrative decisions, and collectibles/points of interests. I am super disappointed by forespoken as I kept tabs on it since it’s announcement.
