I think this is my favourite one of these HP murals I've seen on KZbin. The colour choices for depth are great as they are not all just slightly darker shades of the background. Great detail too.

This is gorgeous!!! Did you use a specific design to project it onto to the wall before you started painting? If so would love to know where I can find it!
@ElvishPotter.artworks2 жыл бұрын
I actually didn’t project it at all. I held an ipad in one hand, with a silhouette image of the section I was drawing on that part of the wall, and then I drew it all by hand with the photo reference in the other hand. I teach high school art, and am very comfortable just sketching freehand.

Did you free hand draw outline then paint or free hand paint it?
@ElvishPotter.artworks8 ай бұрын
Hi! I drew everything freehand in pencil first! Then painted 😃

Nickel M Hi! I am a high school Art teacher, and hand drew all the images. I simply looked up different images from various scenes on my ipad, and held it in my hand while I drew the shadow outlines of the images. I sketched everything by hand in pencil, then filled in with the different shades of blue and gray paint.

Dialoona Yes there are MANY Harry Potter murals that others have created in their own homes, and countless images of different scenes that are available to view online. In order to create this mural, I googled different character and scene “silhouettes” so that I could stick to simple shadowy outlines. This technique is nothing new, and anyone with an Art background like myself is capable of doing the same. As I replied to a previous comment, I am an Art teacher and drew and painted this all freehand while holding images on my ipad in the other hand.

There are of course many different silhouettes to google and use as references, but this composition is just way too similar. The arrangement of the individual elements, the composition of the levels of perspective - all's almost identical, too much to be just a coincidence. Talking vaguely about the "technique" and "drawing freehand" sounds only like a smokescreen here, because all in all it's about the final product.

If you're all referring to Kyle Hallstrom's video, why they're very similar, you'll notice the castle is differently drawn, with different towers. And a few other things.

How much paint did you use for this? What’s the best way to go about doing this as an intermediate artist.
@ElvishPotter.artworks3 жыл бұрын
I think it was a full gallon of the top background color, another gallon for the main color of the castle, and then as you work your way forward in depth, it was a pint of each color as you work your way to the foreground. I did this freehand in pencil with an ipad of images in my left hand. As I glanced at the image in my left hand, I looked up to the wall and then sketched with my right. If you feel you are good at that sort of back and forth, give it a go! If not, you might want to use a projector on the wall and trace images before you paint. Hope that helps!

I merely looked up different “Harry Potter silhouettes” and then sketched the outlines freehand. If you look up silhouettes it allows your brain to focus on the outline rather than getting confused by inner details.
