I first overnight of the 2024 backpacking season took me to one of the few places that is passable in early May. The HOH River Trail in Olympic national Park was a gentle start to the season and the perfect overnight for those graduating to overnights from day hiking, getting your kids out there for the first time, or for guys like me ready to dust the rust off for an epic summer season!

I have both Ursack and Bear Vault for food storage and have discussed with ONP staff. It's the rodents! Nature has a sense of humor in that Ursack will stand up to a grizzly bear but not the sharp teeth of mouse/rat.

Yes it's well known that these things are not rat proof! But they did solve that problem with a newer version - the Allmighty Kodiak. So if that truly is the reason, they should allow the new version to be used.
