in this video I review my new HOKA ONEONE SPEEDGOAT 4 trail running shoes.
I run on trails a lot, in fact 75% of my runs are off-road yet I don’t own ‘proper’ trail running shoes. I mainly run in HOKA Challenger ATR’s, which are incredibly versatile and cope well with both light trails and road but can be somewhat out of their depth in more slippery conditions.
When considering new trail running shoes I looked closely at Salomon and Inov8, but was reluctant to move away from the only brand of running shoes I have worn in 3 years. I decided the Speedgoat 4 was the shoe for me.
Upon opening the box, I was pleased at how they looked although I would have been happy with any of the seven other colour choices. More importantly, how do they feel and how effective are they at finding that all important grip on the trails?
One thing Hoka never fail to deliver on is cushioning and comfort and the Speedgoat 4 is no exception. They feel well made, plush and ‘all day’ comfortable. I can imagine wearing these shoes all day on ultras or trail marathons, and expect they would work well in all but the toughest of conditions that I would usually run in.
How well do they find traction under-foot? Well, there is grip, so much grip! Ok, these are a massive step up when compared to my Challenger ATR’s, but just comparing the look of the sole tells you everything you need to know. The 5mm lugs look aggressive and capable of finding grip on all kinds of terrain and they did not disappoint! My 17-mile trail run took in all kinds of surface from snow and loose rocks to hard surfaces on brief sections of road. These shoes found grip on all of it, not once did I struggle. That said I have not yet had a chance to experience how the Speedgoat 4 handles deep, slippery mud but look forward to trying them out further in the coming days and weeks.
4mm drop? That means little to me, but some runners find drop to be important in selecting a shoe. I found these shoes comfortable and suited my running gait perfectly. The Speedgoat is a neutral shoe but provided ample support and cushioning to support my running style. I initially found them quite narrow and had to make quite a few adjustments to the laces, but after a few miles the shoes loosened up and gave a comfortable fit with no issues whatsoever!
Verdict: Awesome, grippy & comfortable. I can’t wait to get out into the trails and bang out a few more miles!

Hi, just found your channel. I've just bought a pair of these. I was running in ATRs but I needed something with a better grip, especially on the downhill. I'll be testing them out in the Lake District next week. This is a great video, thank you so much for all the information. So helpful. And good to see you testing them in such icy conditions. What a lovely channel. I've subscribed!

I hope you love the speedgoats on the trails as much as I do. Enjoy the Lake District! We have ran a lot of the Lakeland Trails races up there, its just a shame we don't live closer to the area because we would like to do more running in the area.

@@harveymurray-smith6126 I find the tapering OK, I use the time to prepare my kit eat well and get ready for the big day. On the day, relax and enjoy. I always find myself meeting and running with such amazing and inspriring people on the day, times dont matter just focus on crossing the finish line. I find recovery to be the hardest, with sore legs and being tired I can be a little miserable (until I look at my medal collection lol)

@@grantwallace1882 Awesome, I'm pleased you like them! They are the most comfortable shoes I own. The only thing that I have found following a few hundred miles of trails including a trail 50 miler and a couple of trail marathons is that the toe box is quite small. I don't have particularly wide feet but find that my toes can rub a little and cause blisters after a while. If I order again I'm tempted to go another 1/2 size up or maybe try the wider fit.

Thank you, I love the speedgoats and have put a few more miles on them since the video. The only thing I can add now I have worn them more (including a muddy 50 mile ultra) is that I find the toe box a little narrow and I don't have particularly wide feet. It has resulted in some blisters on my big toe, but I still love the Hoka Speedgoat. You can see the 50 miler here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZ7Gd3-fm516kLM :)

@@RunFamRun Thanks a lot for the informations!! I’m from Greece and there is not a lot informations about HOKA in Greek site’s.So I found your review by accident💪.I use to run big distance routes and twice Marathons with ASICS,and Mizuno.I started a year ago trail in mountains and I realized that although are comfortable for long distances, they are not for mountain runs..So a friend recommended HOKA.It s piece of luck I found your information s about!!💪Thanks !! And I apologize for my not correct English dialect ☺️😁

@@miltostraik3862 Your English is better than my Greek :). I would love to run in the mountains in Greece, maybe if we get 1 million subscribers I will do it lol. Let me know if you want any more info, I also run in Hoka Challenger ATR and will be making a video about them soon. The Challenger ATR is a great shoe that is comfortable over long distances on light trails but does not provide as much grip on more technical or slippery trails as the Speedgoat, they are also comfortable on road. I wear the ATR on most daily runs.

I have only worn the Speedgoats twice, once for this video (17 miles) and then for a 50 mile ultra (kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZ7Gd3-fm516kLM). I might make a follow-up video as although I love the Speedgoats I found the toe-box to be small and I badly bruised & blistered by big toes (lost both toenails now). I wore the Hoka Challenger ATR this weekend for a 50 miler and my feet are 100% fine!

@@RunFamRun think we had to order the wide speedgoat😂😂.I bruised my little toe on both sides..... maybe that would solve the problem. But I don't get it the others are so good.

@@stevevanbrussel9177 I agree, its strange as I run in Hoka Arahi and Challenger ATR with no problems. I don't have wide feet but will be either ordering the wide ones or going another half-size bigger. Im usually 8.5(UK) but might have to go to 9. Maybe Hoka should send me some to try lol

Too heavy in this version. I liked the Speed Goat II's better, lighter and faster. The four's are OK, cushy and all that, but too heavy. Who the hell needs that level of "upper" when the damn shoes only last about 220 miles. The soles are worn out so soon, the upper doesn't need to be that bullet proof. Who the hell is designing shoes over there at Hoka? Dummies, maybe you need to come out here and run with me and I'll show you what to do? Seriously! Damn it, pony up Hoka.

I tend to agree on the wear rate of Hoka shoes although the Speedgoats are holding up pretty well so far. I have done around 200 miles in them including a couple of 50 milers and they are still good. My only issue is with then is that the toe box is a little too narrow for me, I don’t have wide feet but these shoes are just a bit too narrow for me. I do love how comfy and cushioned they are though. My favourite shoes that I wear for daily runs are the Hoka Challenge ATR, they are so versatile and work well on both road and trails but I only get about 300 miles before the uppers self-destruct.
