in this video I review my new HOKA ONEONE SPEEDGOAT 4 trail running shoes.
I run on trails a lot, in fact 75% of my runs are off-road yet I don’t own ‘proper’ trail running shoes. I mainly run in HOKA Challenger ATR’s, which are incredibly versatile and cope well with both light trails and road but can be somewhat out of their depth in more slippery conditions.
When considering new trail running shoes I looked closely at Salomon and Inov8, but was reluctant to move away from the only brand of running shoes I have worn in 3 years. I decided the Speedgoat 4 was the shoe for me.
Upon opening the box, I was pleased at how they looked although I would have been happy with any of the seven other colour choices. More importantly, how do they feel and how effective are they at finding that all important grip on the trails?
One thing Hoka never fail to deliver on is cushioning and comfort and the Speedgoat 4 is no exception. They feel well made, plush and ‘all day’ comfortable. I can imagine wearing these shoes all day on ultras or trail marathons, and expect they would work well in all but the toughest of conditions that I would usually run in.
How well do they find traction under-foot? Well, there is grip, so much grip! Ok, these are a massive step up when compared to my Challenger ATR’s, but just comparing the look of the sole tells you everything you need to know. The 5mm lugs look aggressive and capable of finding grip on all kinds of terrain and they did not disappoint! My 17-mile trail run took in all kinds of surface from snow and loose rocks to hard surfaces on brief sections of road. These shoes found grip on all of it, not once did I struggle. That said I have not yet had a chance to experience how the Speedgoat 4 handles deep, slippery mud but look forward to trying them out further in the coming days and weeks.
4mm drop? That means little to me, but some runners find drop to be important in selecting a shoe. I found these shoes comfortable and suited my running gait perfectly. The Speedgoat is a neutral shoe but provided ample support and cushioning to support my running style. I initially found them quite narrow and had to make quite a few adjustments to the laces, but after a few miles the shoes loosened up and gave a comfortable fit with no issues whatsoever!
Verdict: Awesome, grippy & comfortable. I can’t wait to get out into the trails and bang out a few more miles!
