When we passed through Takikawa last January on the train ride from Sapporo to Asahikawa this area was just SLAMMED with snow. I can't imagine how hard it is to survive winters with that much snow.

I think people in areas with a lot of snow will find it difficult even if they are used to it.

I was there during the winter in 2005. There was lots of snow. It's downtown was a ghost town then. Apparently it still is. There is a TV movie called Tsubasa that was filmed there. It features the lead actress of 'Battle Royale'. Takikawa is a nice city. It's too bad it's so vacant.

It seems like it used to be a more lively town, but now the population is decreasing and it seems like it's becoming less and less lively.

Sadly it looks as economically depressed as Kushiro, but al least Kushiro has some tourist money flowing in.
