I recommend watching the first anime, then once you've finished that... Use your own best judgement to decide. It depends on who you most identify with. But personally, I'd read the manga; the last few arcs, which have never been adapted (WHY!!??) are some of the most emotionally moving.

If you mean the song that pipes in at 3:09 it's "Yu wa Shock!" redone, and I can hear the lyrics better in this version. It's also the original opening for the 1983 TV series, these OVAs are a re-imagination of.
