Interestingly, Spanish and English used to be similar about this. I remember my mom drilling me as a kid: you TAKE something there, and BRING something here. The distinction has gotten blurred in the last several decades, at least in the US, and I think UK too probably. Your Spanish is so clear, Brenda. I learn so much just listening to you. Cheers

Actually in the UK the distinction still exists; take there, and bring here. This is still taught in schools. However many people, especially the less educated use "bring" when they should use "take". I have noticed from many US films that "bring" is used almost exclusively. hence Brenda's hesitation. Example; My friend is gong to bring some gin with her when she comes to pick me up. Then we will go together to Brenda's party and I will pick up a bottle of whiskey on the way, so we are taking gin and whiskey to the party. We don't need to take beer or wine because Brenda is taking that!!!

In the US, we use "Take" and "Bring" interchangeably. To say "I'm going to *take* this to the party" is the same as saying "I'm going to *bring* this to the party. We also have done some awful things to the English language at times so, I'm not sure ours is the example to follow. Thank you so much for giving this explanation. I was able to follow along in Spanish and then you confirmed I understood correctly by explaining again in English.

Great lessons, Brenda! If was at home pondering what to contribute to Ana’s party, I would say to myself, “I think I’ll take some wine.” And when I call Ana to let her know that I’ll be at the party, I’d say, “I’m bringing a bottle of wine.”

In the US (at least where I grew up), we do sometimes use "bring" when we mean "take" but either is understood. I had to stop and think when you mentioned that.

Definitely the same in the UK. We may also say, "I will bring with me "something" when we go to the party". This seems to generally be used in the future tense.

Nice lesson! Yes, English speakers use bring and take interchangeably but you are correct in that the word bring is more commonly used when discussing transporting objects to an event. Btw, did you study in Australia? It sounds like you have a slight Aussie English accent

Hola, Hola Spanish. When you are saying "party" it sounds like "potty" The way you are pronouncing the word is how an adult might say to a child "do you need to go to the potty" meaning do you need to go to the restroom. You would say to an adult "are you going to the Parrrrty" I hope this is explained in such a way as to help and not confuse. I really love your videos! Thanks

Actually, this is similar to how take and bring are supposed to be used in standard usage. But over time, it has gotten lost in translation in English to English just like many people routinely use infer and imply as substitutes. Sadly, people aren't taught straight English anymore, especially among linguists who are all about usage no matter how incorrect as long as it's common.

Brenda youre correct. I would say it that way in English..."Im going to bring a bottle of wine to the party". Yo voy a llevar una botella de vino a la fiesta. These words just dont translate literally from Spanish to English. This is the first time youtube has suggested one of your videos to me, i subscribed to your channel. Id say Im at some intermediate level, ive been studying spanish for about 20 months now. Thanks for the lessons!

Very helpful, but the illustrations for llevar and the illustration for traer are exactly the same. Both of them show the person carrying an object towards the house. It seems that one of the illustrations should show the person carrying an object away from the house.

¡Excelente ejemplo Ray! Pero en ambos casos vamos a decir 'llevar'. In both cases we need to say 'llevar': voy a llevar esta carta al correo, para que te la lleven a ti (I'll bring/take this letter to the PO so they can take it to you). Bring is if you're in the destination. For example, you got to the post office and you forgot to bring (traer) the letter and you tell the postman you're sorry and that he'll have to take it to your friend (llevar) tomorrow. I hope this example helps you understand the difference.

I think you’d say “Juan lleva”, not “Juan trae” because Juan is the subject. Juan is bringing something from where he’s at, to the party. Whereas if Maria were the subject, like “Maria wants Juan to bring something to the party”, you’d use traer, because now the subject (Maria) is already at the destination. So it would be “Maria quiere que Juan traiga algo a su fiesta”

¡Muy Bien Jonathan! Como puedes ver 'llevar' tiene muchos significados en inglés. Pequeñas correcciones: Voy a McDonalds porque quiero una hamburguesa para llevar. Llevo un sombrero. Llevo la maleta al aeropuerto. 'Llevarse' es la forma reflexiva del verbo y significa to take something away with you, por ejemplo: me llevo muchos recuerdos de mis vacaciones en Madrid.
