@ Acorn Braids - Being a Civil War re-enactor that portrays a federal army officer (Capt.) i am so glad i found this video. I have gold/black hat cords that needed shortening for my uniform hat and this helped massively! Thank you sir!

Great video! I used this for both my Trooper Campaign hat and my Cav Stetson...I've never seen the paper clip trick, thanks for that! Back in the old days, the story goes that the acorns were put up there for Cav Troopers so that the constant bumping on the Stetson would help them to stay awake while mounted, and another story is that the acorns were earned after the Trooper's first combat and one more was that was a way to show that a Trooper was married...Don't know if there's any truth to any of those explanations though...

hey thanks! Been wondering how to get into the acorns... The paperclip trick is cool too. Any tips for how to keep the circumference of the cord in place around the band area? Mine are always coming loose when I'm handling the hat, or coming off all together when someone else handles it.
@HollyBaker5 жыл бұрын
If you need to take the acorns off the ends, it can be done by using needle nose pliers to push the cord off through the hole in the end (see video). As far as keeping the cords tight on the hat, our acorn braids dont usually have that problem because the braiding make the acorns and center slide tighter around the cord. We have seen some hats in the past that had an actual knot tied around the center slide to keep everything tight, but these braided acorns don't require that. I will be making a new video soon showing how to use clear superglue to shape the end cords without having to use wire or paperclip. Thanks for watching.

I just got a new campaign hat and I was wondering what would happen if I spray paint to make it more darker and glossy.
@HollyBaker6 жыл бұрын
We use black spray gloss enamel paint. That works really well.

We used a royal blue when we were first issued a new campaign hat--Just be sure to tape off the little bow strip, it's a different color than the hat itself (a personal pet peeve of mine)

I singe the raw ends of the cord before putting it back into the acorn. Just dab it with a little cold water after singeing, or you’ll need Smokey the Bear to put out your Smokey the Bear hat.

Hey Scott, i had a family member ask me why we wear acorns on our covers. Do you know?
@holbbiesacornbraids5 жыл бұрын
I don't know exactly when it started, but there are historical accounts and photos showing braided hat cords as far back as the Civil War. Some historians and re-enactors say that the use of wooden acorns started as a way of keeping cowboys awake during long rides by hitting the brims of their hats. During the Civil War, some hat cords were used to depict rank and unit type by their colors. These days, they are strictly ornamental, however many agencies still differentiate ranks with their colors as with their badges and other apparel (i.e. officers wearing all gold). Sorry I don't have more specifics. Thanks for viewing!

Hy! Please ask me why wears sheriffs this wire at hat? What is that's historic usability? How, can use those in past? Nowadays this is fashion/tradition, I think... We are don't know that, in my country. Thanks for the answer!

your supposed to make a 1/2 knot in the cord to lock it into place and that in itself will shorten them to the proper length.

Acorn Braids that's odd, it worked from my phone but not from my laptop. anyway was wondering if I could order just the gold mylar cord itself (used to make the hat cord) in about 20-25 foot quantity...is that possible?
@holbbiesacornbraids6 жыл бұрын
brunom72 I don't make those. So I don't have the cord on its own. You can get them from Stratton Hats.

Thank you for taking time to watch our video. That's why we teach you how to trim them so you can make them the length that you want. There is no one size fits all. It's all about your personal preference. My husband likes them short, and most NCSHP State Troopers wear them that way.
