When I bought mine the manufacturer of Holbeins was saying that they were made with a new special wax. All oil pencils are a mix of oil and wax. It would be great if companies would list % of oil to wax. I combine my Polychromers with my Holbeins and together you have a perfect mix. IMO I feel I need to say my Prismacolor Premieres have everything I need without needing to rely on another set. It's my on the road set because of this.
@mchobbit29514 жыл бұрын
So you want to say that the FULL HOLBEIN SET doesn't have everything you need but the Prisma set does?? I have a hard time believing that looking at everything included in the Holbein set. If anything, they have MORE than your beloved Prismas.

Janet Danes, I'm trying to order a set of 150 Holbein's from Amazon Japan. I opened an Amazon account there and registered my credit card. Made the purchase but then got something that said I needed a "pay id" number. Got it but I haven't a clue how to complete this transaction. Do you have any suggestions?
@janetdanes79454 жыл бұрын
Christine Houde...hmmm, I’m not sure. I had this happen once and think it is actually your bank requesting your Pay ID number for security. I’d ask your bank as I think it’s not connected to Amazon Japan. Also, I’m not able to re-order from Amazon, Japan. I use to order colouring books from there as well, but since Amazon Australia opened up, I can only purchase from them. Anything from the US has to also go through Amazon, AU at the moment, with no direct ordering from them. Hope this helps.

I certainly wish all the other pencil brands would supply a chart like these have. They do like really similar to the Faber Castells. I think the gold band towards the bottom is set a little lower on the FC's. I love the metallic selection these have and that they're oil & wax based. Interesting that they have two different whites. And, finally, the pastels are to die for! No wonder they're $300. One more thing for the wishlist! Thanks for the great review Claire!!!

I have wanted some Holbein pencils for a long time but just could not justify the price. I had a 12 set of pastel tones and longed for that bottom layer. I have been having a bit of a sort out of my pencil sets and coming across my “precious” mini pastel set I decided to see what was available now and how much they were. Amazon was, as usual, my first port of call and I was surprised to see other sets than the 150. Still quite an outlay but a more realistic price. I then had a look on eBay and they had just one set left of 50 pastel tones - the bottom layer I so wanted. Then I quickly went to Jackson’s art supplies who were very low on stock and more expensive anyway. BUT they had single pencils (£3 each). In my mind this immediately made buying Holbein a whole new ball game. They haven’t got many in stock but they expected September delivery. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I ordered the 50 pastel tones set from eBay at just under £100 inclusive of postage and no customs charges. There was an estimated 4 weeks or so delivery from Japan. Barely a week later the package arrived - I was amazed. I’m over the 🌓 to get them so quickly and they are all I thought they would be. Now I have that little niggling doubt whether I should have got the full set. I could get more colours open stock but they would work out much dearer than buying them all together. The other 50 set duplicates some of the colours I now have but it may be a viable option, with a few more singles to cover the colours I would need. I think I’ll try and decide on the most useful colours to me (as often the difference between two colours is small) and buy a few at a time as I can afford it. I urge you to be aware when buying the smaller sets that if you have the means, even though you shouldn’t, you might well wish you had bought the whole 150 set. Especially as you know you can replenish most used.colours open stock. I also wonder if, in fact, they are the most expensive on the market since Derwent brought out Lightfast. I never added up what it cost to get a full set of those the way they put them out at three different times. Not sure I would have got them if I’d been aware what a set would end up costing. At least they come open stock (from Cult Pens) I think at £3 the same as the Holbein. I only wrote this comment to make sure others knew where to get Holbein open stock and that you could now buy the coveted pastel tones alone but ended up writing too much. The bottom line is buy the most you can somehow afford knowing you can keep your set complete with open stock.

Leila Leigh I’m so sorry Leila that I did not see your question. 3 mths later here we are🙄. I love all 3 brands but I’m the type of colourist who loves to use the pencil I feel suits the paper and illustration so imo I’d mix and match often and these 3 brands are my favourites but I must add I adore Luminance. My only issue I’d love more than 74 colours. Polychromos are definitely the hard pencil I’m sure you’ve heard with Prismas being so much softer. Holbeins are soft like the Prismas rather than hard as the Polys but there’s no comparison. Nor is there pricewise. I have 2x Prismas 150 simply for doubles as I find they wear down so much faster than others. I wait for sales and it was far cheaper for me to do that than keep replacing singles. If you can afford it Holbeins are the best imo. In fact I added the 150 pastels when I found them on sale as doubles. To sum up polychromos is the better bargain if you don’t mind a harder lead but are not cheap. Prismas you can often find at a bargain price and they lay down easily and blend easily but quality wise they do not compare to polychromos and not to Holbeins at all. Look at what you’d like to do with your pencils eg soft and easy lay down and lower cost ie Prismas 150 colour choice or pay extra and have a harder lead that still lays down beautifully and those are polychromos but only 120 colours. If you have the funds I’d buy Holbeins for lay down, blending and colour choice esp pastel shades. Hope this helps🤗🌹

Such a gourgeous set of pencils! I'm drooling over the keyboard haha, those pastels are gorgeous, it's not easy to get light colors. My country, Argentina, has a super abusive customs tax (punishment) for everything you buy abroad, it doesn't matter if it's a gift or just one piece for personal use. We pay 50% of the total value (item plus shipping values), and now, on top pf that you also have a high tax if you spend in foreign money with your credit card, like 60% I guess, so buying a huge set like this would be totally unreachable for me. I need a Han Solo to smuggle it for me lol or probably need to flee to a happier land lol.

Hi! Absolutely love your review. I am a beginner in using colour pencils and just got my Faber Castell Polychromos 120 which I absolutely love. I’ve read up a lot on colour pencils and avoided wax pencils because of wax bloom. These look absolutely lovely and I understand they are a combination of wax, oils and fats. Can I just get your feedback if you face issues when it comes to wax bloom with these?

Noticed some come with this gray cardboard box design and others come with a blue one, what’s the difference?

I "would like them in my collection, but not at the price they charge!😂TY, Claire! Do you know they're now available in the USA at Blick's? Including open stock.😍 Enjoy them! I got about half a dozen purples b/c of your blend suggestions(and they're wonderful)..Thanks again! Happy coloring! 💋P.S. Like your(new?) ring!

So is a higher star rating more light-fast or less?

Is she still selling them ? I know this video is older. I’m definitely interested in buying them. I can’t find them anywhere else at the moment 🥺

Good review, very informative. Perhaps the only thing I would suggest is a written, bullet point list at the end of the video stating the positives and negatives of these pencils, which are applicable to every product a person can be - everything has good and bad points, even if they are somewhat almost perfect. Obviously, one glaring negative would be the cost and also that they are not available to purchase as a single pencil, which is important to me as yes, they might be included in a cheaper, 12 pack version etc but even so, the 12 packs are still not cheap and I might not necessarily want all of the other 11 pencils included in that 12 pack range. But otherwise, as i said - overall a good review and very informative. Thank you for that and also thank you for including the links - that is very helpful 🙏

I know they have smaller sets that are cheaper for anyone interested. I saw a pastel set on Ebay for around $30. But it's only a 12 set. So still really expensive for what you are getting but affordable compared to the bigger sets. It's a shame. I'd love to try them. I might get the pastel set in the future though

Do these colored pencils blend well similar to Prismacolor and Polychromos? Thank you!
Me again! Sorry this ended so abruptly but I pressed the send arrow by mistake! Hope the info might help some of you to build up a collection of these beautiful pencils.
