For those who don't know, the license plate "Brock 05" is a testament to Peter Brock (Brocky), who was Australia's greatest touring car driver of all time, who raced under the number 05 and was also rated as one of the top 10 touring car drivers of all time, worldwide. In a car like that ,he won Australia's greatest motor race "Bathurst" by six laps, setting a new lap record on the last of 163 laps (~1000 km/600 miles). The first Ford was around 225 km (137 miles) behind.

Hey Frank, from memory, and please correct me if I am wrong, the '05' was Peter's message to the Australian motoring public that 0.05% was the maximum legal amount of alcohol you could have in your blood system to drive a motor vehicle. In a previous life I had 2 Brock Holden Commodores, 5 litre V8 and took them around Mt Panorama on a few occasions - brilliant cars! RIP Mr Brock and thank you for the wonderful memories 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I'm a Kiwi guy who had a Fox Mustang. The SS Torona hatch was an optional body and trim package, could be an A9X with L31 308 Holden V8 with a factory 240 HP gross engine, or about 169 HP net as an emissions engine. But there were 327Foeged Pistons, or Hi Silicon Repco pistons, Formula 5000 head and block castings, Repco Roller Rockers and aftermarket parts around to take it to 430 Hp gross. Or any number of lesser emissions legal 135 HP gross or 106 HP net 202 1bbl in line sixes, a special 185 HP net SL/T Stromberg 1bbl CDS175 Garret AirResearch Split Pulse T3 Turbo 202 (3.3 liter) , or 253 2bbl V8 4.2 liter with 185 gross or 121 HP net. The basic car isn't GMs US H body or a German Opel Ascona underneath, , but a unique rack and pinion steering and coil spring chassis with Early Holden and HQ-WB suspension pickup points, and a fully unit construction chassis. It has a Salisbury axle on the last A9X cars, and a Third member 6.8 inch on the 76 - 78 Hatchbacks. It is exactly the same size as the Fox Mustang, just a little narrower and has a slightly taller roof. These cars in Holden's Dealer Team sponsored A9X trim had earlier L34 Torana parts homologated, a 2.6 axle ratio, thermo cooling fans, a Super T10 4 speed gearbox in race trim, and a Boss 302/ Phase III GTHO Falcon 780 CFM Holley 4bbl carb lifted from the Ford and GM Holley list reference, but we're often run with Group C spec twin Weber IDA 48s. 430 HP, and 160 mph top speeds, with a 32.5 US gallon drop tank for almost 100 mph average lap speeds at 2 minutes 25 sec around Mount Panorama at Bathurst. These little "Dart 'n' Duck" Mountain Lions truly ate up and spat out the best 530 HP 351 C 4V Falcon Cobra Hardtops for breakfast for two years straight. 78 and 79 were Golden times to be a Holden supporter, with 100% Small Block Holden engines, not based on anything except the SBCs bore spacings...they were able to last bursts past 6700 rpm or more, and that 390 to 430 HP figure was regularly seen on the Fishermen's Bend dyno under a standout A list of engineers who weren't financed by General Motors, but by the Dealer's who bankrolled about 200 cars to get the project started intially on Four door 1974 L34 SL/R 5000 sedans.

@@deliciouslifetv7362 the Holden Torana never came out with a Chev engine. The SS came out in either the 253 V8 or the 308 V8. The SLR5000 which is a 4 door came out with the 308 V8 only. Originally 308cu, Holden 4bbl in order to make Homologation for Racing at Bathhurst. The 253 wasn't used in n the SS. Holden since it,s inception was aligned with Pontiac and Oldsmobile, they have the same in common with the Pontiac V8s. Only main difference they were made with starter on the left of the block to make it easier for Right hand Drive. The Brock05 number plate, probably an homage to the late Sir Peter Brock who campaigned in the HSV and HDT Toranas with his #05 always on his car. Looks to be a nice example in the slime green. Chevys were only used in Holden's for Racing purposes from 1968 in the Monaro 327. For Racing. 350 in 1969, 1970, 71, to stay competitive against the 351 ford's and 340 Chryslers. The only other Chev that was used was the 307 used in the Holden Brougham. Early forrunner to the. Statesman. The 253/ 4.3l usually left the factory as a 2 bbl offering. Back in the seventies there was all manner of aftermarket goodies available, for Holden's. So any 253s would have only been aftermarket motors that found their way into Toranas.

LX Torana. A9X Option (seen here) was only available on the 5.0-litre V8-powered SLR 5000 sedan and SS hatchback. It had a 5lt 308 cubic inch V8. They only came with a 4 speed manual. The fact that this has a 5 speed manual gearbox would indicate that it has been fitted with either a Toyota Celica or Borg-Warner box. Celica boxes were the goto for that extra gear as they were cheap and 'bullet proof' for the output of a worked V8.

Absolutely lovely Torana SS and worth huge dollars now. Just echoing some comments here though - the bonnet scoop was bolted on ex-factory rather than moulded into the bonnet. They came out with a 4.2 litre 253 cubic inch or 5.0 litre 308 cubic inch V8 not a Chev. The manuals were a factory 4 speed. And the bonnet blackout usually ran along the doors to the hatch (A9X). Hotwire wheels were a popular option. That's a great example he's got there. The americans must freak out seeing and hearing this cruise by. Great video mate.

Brocky was no doubt a dead-set, fair-dinkum, dinky-di, true-blue, you-beaut Aussie racing legend, but he went a bit off the rails after he retired, had a big spat with Holden & was divorced from Bev, endorsing of all things, Lada Samaras from Russia (?!) & something called a Polariser, which was supposed to prevent rust & I think also to cause the petrol molecules to be "aligned" to supposedly increase fuel economy & power. He went broke & died some years later driving head-on into a tree in the Targa West tarmac rally in the hills east of Perth. A sad end to a great racing career. Strangely enough, America had a great racing legend named Pete Brock.

The owner has been accumulating parts for over 20 years from sources Downunder, including the race gas tank from the original manufacturer. Color is restored to original and you could see it all over the inside when the interior was stripped out. I understand this is the only one produced in this shade of green. Chev V8 small block inspired but you won't find a Chev engine like it in the USA. It is a 308 cubic inch mill developed in Australia and made at the Fishermans Bend plant. GMH decided to promote the Torana as its performance tin-top racing platform to go up against the Ford Falcon GT. The Ford was a much bigger car with a 351 cube mill. The strategy behind the Torana was that a smaller, lighter vehicle with the right power-to-weight ratio could beat a bigger more powerful car because it had less weight to push and pull up and corner with plus less drag and better fuel consumption with the smaller engine. The first racing Torana's had inline six-cylinder engines and while successful struggled on the long straights or uphill climbs and our most famous track had both of those. The third-generation racing Torana would therefore be a V8 and a very successful one but the Ford Falcon 351 still managed to rain on their parade every so often.

That was a pretty good appraisal of the mighty Torana. I'll be bold enough to suggest the fellow standing at the front of the Holden is an Aussie wearing thongs (flip-flops in America). Australians built great cars, GM (US) pulled the plug on our factories despite the fact that every vehicle produced was of a very high standard. Today, Asian cars top our sales figures, result....both the US and Australia have managed to do themselves a gross disservice. I lament the exit of General Motors and Ford from manufacturing high quality vehicles in my homeland. It effing sucks.
