This adult female brown bear, called "Holderman", is identified by her long, rectangular snout. Here, she is successfully fishing for post-spawning chum salmon in the lower McNeil River area.

For a couple of years there was a live cam at McNeil Falls but the remote location and intervening terrain made it technically difficult to transit live video to a capable receiver. It had to be transmitted to a repeater on equally remote Augustine Island and then to Homer. It was very difficult to keep everything aligned and was a considerable demand on the limited McNeil staff time.
