As a Gen Xer who works alongside Xennials, this hits HARD! I've had the experience of seeing people walking in with newly printed t-shirts of "old bands, like my mom likes them.." and then told them I saw them LIVE IN CONCERT!!! and they're like "WHOOAAAA.....". Same thing happened a while back, guy came in wearing a reprint of a t-shirt advertising WRESTLEMANIA VI... He was showing me and I just said "Yeah, April 1, 1990 SkyDome Toronto Canada. Ultimate Warrior Beat Hulk Hogan for the title....I WAS THERE!!" And he acted like he wanted to sit me down and hear the stories of "The Olden Days" Speaking of finding things in the closet, I was doing a DEEP clean of the closest in my spare room when I found a pair of Jean shorts that I had tossed in there because I needed a hole patched in the pocket (remember when keys were pointy?) They were early '90 style - Painted and embroidered with DRAGONS and COOL SYMBOLS! i got the pocket patched up and wore them out ONCE and got stopped like 5 times about where I got them!

My teen daughter needed something dressy to wear for a band concert. She raised my closet, with my permission. She found a shirt that I've had for probably 20-25 years. It looks like a white button down shirt under a black sweater, but it's really just one shirt. She loved it and claimed it for herself. A few days before that, she was wearing ripped jeans, a Nirvana shirt, and had headphones on. I told her she looked like a 90s grunge band groupie.

80's girl here, Doc Martins!! Suddenly I am seeing them everywhere.😊 Back then the only way to get the was to order them from England! Their catalogue consisted of a BW pamphlet with drawings and 3 color choices. (you didn't actually see the color). Then you would place your order in the mail with a money order and wait weeks to get them. All the while hoping to God it wasn't a scam because you really didn't know for sure the first time you ordered them. 😋 I saw my niece wearing a Guns and Roses tee and I was so psyched! I was like hey you like Guns and Roses! And I was going on about my favorite songs. Then she sheepishly said "I don't know who they are, I just thought it looked cool." I was instantly crushed.

GenXer here with teenage daughters, this hits the nail on the head! The newest trend they introduced me to is “coquette”, before that it was “dark academia”, and before that I think it was something like “autumn vibes”. What I see, preppy but make it pink or black or brown. They’re like “Mom, you don’t get it”.
From your comparisons, it seems like you may be thinking of a subcategory of the coquette aesthetic, rather than the overall aesthetic. If Im understanding this trend correctly, the girls I knew in the 90s that had the coquette aesthetic often had white wicker furniture, a daybed, or a canopy bed. Their figurines often included a ballerina and/or carousel horses. I myself had not one but two vintage vanities in my bedroom, as well as the aforementioned figurines.

Oh this is SO TRUE! I politely disagree with wearing band logos when you have no idea about that band. 😐 The fashion cycle of bringing things back is nothing new though. I remember when I was a teen in the 2000s and we wore bell bottom jeans, my mom used to tell me how she wore those as a young adult in the 70s. 😄
@kristinathomas5890 Жыл бұрын
You know what's funny about the 70s stuff that became cool again in the 90s... Some 70s looks did NOT come back in the 90s but Gen Z is somehow finding them and labeling them 90s. Huh? 😂

When I was a teen I used to take out some pieces from my mom's closet. Then go and use them for weeks before anyone got hands on something similar. I loved being "a trend settler" 😂🙄 really it's funny how teen brains work

Boot cut/Wide leg jeans, I never stopped wearing them. Been wearing them since I was 15? I’m 38 now. I’m just back in style. Same with my eyebrows, never went through thin eyebrows… Just kept them the way they were.
@LythaWausW Жыл бұрын
Is it true that natural eyebrows are in style? I don't know any decade where women didn't do something to them.
@angelagenx6629 Жыл бұрын
I never stopped wearing them either, wish I could say the same about the eyebrows! They grew back from the 90’s skinny eyebrow trend, too bad they didn’t get the same memo from the 2000’s skinny brow trend.

For me, it is the Steve Madden wedge slide with the wide, stretchy single strap. The one that makes the distinctive "slap, slap" sound when you walk. I lived in those when my kids were little and I didn't have time to tie my shoes! I went shoe shopping with my daughter and she HAD to try them on!

I won’t buy my daughters a band t-shirt unless they can name a few songs and listen to some of the music and since they are always making fun of what I listen to it looks like t-shirts from bands from the 70’s - mid 2000’s won’t be making an appearance in their closet 😂

I have seen all of these in the mall. I just saw that platform sandals are back. These were in when I was a teen in the 90s and at that time I had borrowed them from my mom. These trends are the trends that keep on giving.

The things that were cool in the 70s, and that resurfaced in the 90s so we borrowed them from our moms. These are the things that confuse the kids today. They label a shoulder length wavy, layered hairdo a "90s blowout" but it's really a 70s or early 80s hairdo, like the kind we would see in an old JC Penny's catalog in Grandma's house, or in a photo of our moms when we were babies. I think the kids got it right when they were only copying late 90s grunge, and mid 90s Kelly Kapowski, but they kept going and they don't know which stuff is 70s vs 90s.
