I hold with Ludwig Von Motzart. I may reinstall my shoulder and chin rest but currently love the extra fidelity yielded by lack of chin rest. I prefer mobility rather than locked down security. Having said all that I also hold that the wonderful Nicola Benedetti and her Libero chin rest make vibrato certainly more efficatious. If I can find a Libero shoulder rest shurely will do so in the Benedetti fashion. Otherwise may be content with baroque Motzart hold with chin over high E. String. My current pattern is to emulate David Ostrach and play the instrument on its side to avoid jabbing fellow musician in the eye with my haphazard bow. Initially I was trained without a shoulder rest. My biggest flaw has been to grip the neck with my thumb which kills vibrato.
