Here in New Zealand we used to be home to some of the most magnificent birds of prey in the world, including the largest eagle (Haast's Eagle, latin name: Hieraaetus moorei) and the largest harrier (The Eyles or Forbes' Harrier, latin name: Circus teauteensis) ever to have existed. Fun fact, harpy eagles are friend shaped. They’re too friendly towards humans for their own good, which is why there are so few left. They don’t fear humans, you can walk right up to one. Their curiosity and kindness has led to poachers massacring these gorgeous birds.

An interesting fact: These birds have trouble adapting to other places (not their native forests) and studies indicate that this is probably because they need a bee native to the forests where they live to clean their respiratory tract (their beak) in a symbiotic relationship. And they are from the Amazon rainforest, at least most of them, but they can even be found in Mexico.

My old cat got attacked once, had four big punctures around his rib, but the bird didn't get a good enough grip and the cat escaped. I still love eagles though.

Maya, and or fans, you ought to check out the Berkut Eagles of Mongolia that hunt wolves and antelopes. They are not bigger than the Harpy, but they are maybe second to that. They are a sub species of Golden Eagle native to Mongolia and Russia. The Mongol tribes have a rich tradition of falconry practice, taming Berkut Eagles and using them to hunt antelope and wolves, as previously mentioned, which they are also known to hunt in the wild, anyways.
