Here in New Zealand we used to be home to some of the most magnificent birds of prey in the world, including the largest eagle (Haast's Eagle, latin name: Hieraaetus moorei) and the largest harrier (The Eyles or Forbes' Harrier, latin name: Circus teauteensis) ever to have existed. They were found nowhere else in the world. These birds were unable to survive the changes brought about by the arrival of humans and are now extinct

Fun fact, harpy eagles are friend shaped. They’re too friendly towards humans for their own good, which is why there are so few left. They don’t fear humans, you can walk right up to one. Their curiosity and kindness has led to poachers massacring these gorgeous birds.

@@snwbrdn777 Reading comprehension is quite important. "Carry ABOUT a 1/3 of their body weight" versus. "Carry UP TO 1/2 of their body weight". Remember. A really fast human can compete in the Olympics but you can run just about average. See why that's important?

I have always loved birds of pray, and seeing this actually brings tears to my eyes. I’am not sure why, but I think I would sob if I ever got close to one in the flesh. We truly must protect all species.

An interesting fact: These birds have trouble adapting to other places (not their native forests) and studies indicate that this is probably because they need a bee native to the forests where they live to clean their respiratory tract (their beak) in a symbiotic relationship. And they are from the Amazon rainforest, at least most of them, but they can even be found in Mexico.

Cool thing about harpy eagles is they never developed a fear of humans so even in the wild you can walk right up to them. Sadly it's taken advantage of for poaching

When I was a kid my cousin was a falconer and worked for a birds of prey rescue. I got to experience a few of these birds up close and am still in awe 50 years later.

@@Cr0wned_Crow There were no flying dinosaurs actually. Although some could "glide" but that isn't technically flight any more than a jump is. Pterosaurs could fly but they were not dinosaurs. They are reptiles that evolved separately from dinosaurs.

They're not exaggerating about the grip strength. At a local wildlife rehab, one of the workers had a Golden Eagle perched on her forearm like this, and when someone accidentally slammed a door and startled the eagle, it reflexively clamped with its feet and broke a bone in her arm.

25 years ago, when I was a small child I heard about the Harpy Eagle, and I’ve ALWAYS wanted one so I do some cool falconry stuff ever since I first tried it at an animal sanctuary.
