The Houston one at 0:54 the deliberate rushed behind is correct. The rules say if a player has had reasonable time to dispose of the ball and the rush it over the goal line, no matter how much pressure they are under its deliberate. Houston spins out of a tackle, takes about 8 steps and then walks it over. Deliberate is the correct call.

Dan Houston call is correct. There are two parts to the rule. You cannot rush the ball unless there is sufficient pressure within the 9 metres AND you cannot rush if you have time and space to dispose of the football. Houston had all the time and space he needed but chose to rush.
@drblackmole8858 Жыл бұрын
Agreed but it was inconsistent with how the rule is usually umpired. "Sufficient pressure" usually just seems to mean the player could try to tackle you, even if they aren't. The call is fine if it's called that way every time.

7:42 reminds me of the advantage call on bailey in the final. strange how they were different calls but similar-ish situations
@HorizonOfHope Жыл бұрын
TBH, that's a flaw in the rules and not the umpire in that case. The rule says the player decides. Umpires are only allowed to call it back if their whistle came after the ball was disposed. The whistle was before Bailey kicked it. There's the likely fact that he didn't hear it, but that's the rule as it is. And now, of course, we can all patiently wait for the AFL to change that rule to prevent such an obvious edge-case coming up again... right... ?

I really like the idea of calling out umpiring decisions - particularly since players & clubs are gagged from doing so. Back in the day, channel 7 World Wide of Sports used to run a segment called; “what’s your decision,” where questionable umpiring decisions would be explained by the officiating umpire live on TV. They were the days when the game belonged to the people. So we’ll done. This kind of compilation is precisely what the game needs. 1. The tackle laid by Bomber player against GC, & and not paid for HTB was beyond belief. Even all players knew it was a free kick & stopped playing.🤷♂️ 2. Collingwood player who ran off the mark and was promptly called back to man his mark instead of being given a 50 mtr penalty Dumbfounding 😲 3. The worst however was the Demon’s player who was clearly out of bounds yet penalised as if the ball remained in the field of play. That had umpiring agenda written all over it! 🙈
@benm3017 Жыл бұрын
How come they don't run that segment anymore? That sounds like good accountability for the umpires

Jones's arm catches Brown's arm as he goes up to mark. He interferes whether by accident or not. Definite free!
@crispykfc454 Жыл бұрын
tbh I think the callum brown one makes sense, regardless of Jones intention he did block Callum from the ball and made no real attempt to get at it with his hands. he may be watching the ball but that can't excuse someone from taking another man who is attacking the ball visibly, also worth noting the rulebook doesnt really denote what a block is defined as other than "A Block" a bit more context from the AFL would be nice to see to clear up these kinds of issues.
@chadchadderton Жыл бұрын
If anything it was an unrealistic attempt by callum brown... as he leaves the ground and takes out another player in a contest with no realistic attempt to actually get the ball that went 5 metres over their head.

@Reexys Жыл бұрын
5:52 actually this rule was changed in the latter of the 2022 season. The AFL wanted to stop awarding 50 meter penalties for a fake kick, and considering Mihocek thought he had kicked it as his head turned around it was fair enough to call it back. Realistically as per the rules it should've been called play on, but that's looking back at it. Tough to make that call in the moment.

The first call is excellent. Clearly correct. I understand Lachie Jones has eyes for the ball, but he backs away from it into Callum Brown, doesn't jump to catch it, and doesn't put his arms up to catch it. That's not an attempt to mark or spoil, and eyes for the ball doesn't change that. Brown does jump and reach. Those are the calls that separate good umpires from excellent umpires.
@User-7.7771 Жыл бұрын

my thoughts are that lachie jones clearly blocked brown out of contesting the ball, even if they both had eyes for the ball and it was totally accidental, jones who had front position made it impossible for brown to contest the ball, thats why it is a free kick

Calling the Houston decision bad is a fundamental misunderstanding of the rule. If you have the time and space to dispose of the ball, and run it over, it's a free kick. Clearly Houston had both. Pressure from defenders is not the only test.

I think the first deliberate call is correct at 1:00, there are players close to him but they are barely pressuring him, zoning him if anything and he steps across quite comfortably. I'd call that deliberate... agree with everything else Can we just add the high tackle with like 40sec to go that Adelaide SHOULD have been awarded against collingwood and the absolute blind umpiring in the adelaide v sydney game where litereally everyone watching knew it was a goal except the umpire that thinks because you can fit a ream of paper between the ball and post, means it's touched the post

Gardiner taking out McKay not getting called was not harsh. A throw in is better than him kicking out on the full.
@indyspud Жыл бұрын
That one was tricky because Gardiner was approaching from the side, and McKay was wrestling with Andrews away from the drop zone before coming back and attempting to make the mark. Look at the footage, Gardiner and McKay only had eyes for the footy. The contact was completely accidental and with McKay's prior movements, arguably not intended. So to say this one is bad because a free wasn't called, yet the free for the block in the first example between GWS and Port is bad because they both had eyes for the footy, makes no sense.

Jones-Not a block if the ball is on the wrong side of Jones. Terrible call. Closer to a unrealistic attempt the other way. Play on Houston-Not the correct call but not a complete howler. I don't begrudge this call even if there's room for improvement McKay-Was hard for the defender to read as McKay stopped for the player on the ground. Still in the back though Rayner-I say mark as it was controlled well enough in the air and only came out when he hit the deck. Though given there was a grab, juggle, grab and then bounce off the ground it probably was harder to see at ground level. Again like Jones I'm not upset about it McPherson-Not sure who got the free in the end but the Sun's player slides in at knee height which has been a free for a while. Collingwood free for me unless I'm missing something Aliir-Holding all day. The prior was enough to get that Point-Thats embarrassing McPherson again-That was a kick. We can debate whether it was enough but that's a great call from the ump if you deem the kick legal Buddy-He was smart enough to put his arm under the defenders arm. To the ump at ground level looking at their backs it looks the right call. Dodgy act and it's a free all day but that's what you learn with a career as long as Buddy Murphy-Free all day... No malice but a free Jordan-That is a very poor call Gawn-I hate that act. Now there are rules for blocking leads and the ball but.... Is this one of those it's only a free if you get caught things? I don't see it as a free and think it's for the players to remonstrate but I'd like to know the exact wording of blocking rules McKenna-The ump should have pulled him back or or called 50. Short of reversing it that call couldn't be more wrong Push and shove- (forgot the names)-I don't know how the ump picked something out of that. If they're both at it and it's tame let them have a crack Elliott-based on this season, yes that's a free. However kinda glad it wasn't. Just looks soft Viney-out all day. Was he called insufficient? If that's the call you could make it work Mark-Not a mark. Positioning likely cause Second throw in-I guess it didn't feel right Stuff missed Cameron out of bounds Dawson punched in the face and robbed of an after the siren chance Let's.... Let's not do the Ben Keays no goal again
