I have recently acquired a gas well & have this problem. I need to change the polished rod. I am very mechanical, but really don’t know much about how to do this. Does the polished rod act as a cover on the sucker rod to seal oil etc. from leaking, or is it just attached to the sucker rod on both ends?

The Polished Rod is a solid thick rod at top. There are two types: one that does not have a smooth spray metal finish and others that do. If it does not have that finish, it will have a PR Liner attached on top of it that holds the pressure seal with the Stuffing Box. The PR Liner only needs to be the length of the stroke length plus an additional foot or so. So you might have a 24' Polished Rod but only a 10' PR Liner.

Are all polished rods hollow inside?

Actually no polished rods are hollow: they are all solid steel. Some polished rods have a smooth polished surface and other polished rods are a rough surface, which requires the use of a Polished Rod Liner that is clamped onto the polished rod and provides the pressure seal with the stuffing box packing. A company might use one of these as the cheaper PR Liner can be replaced if damaged without replacing the full PR (also it is easier to put a clamp on the PR to stack the rods out on the wellhead without damaging the smooth polished finish). This video shows a pin hole in the liner.
