Holiday Heart is a great film! It has a lot of layers and great acting. If it was released today and directed by Ava Duvernay or Barry Jenkins it would be nominated for Oscars.

I saw this once when I was a kid and all I remembered from this movie was "I got the bike!" but when I watched it as an adult I genuinely felt like everybody should see this movie at least once in their life...even with its production quality and unintentional comedy this movie is still absolutely amazing imo

I loved this review. In spite of BET playing it almost every weekend, this movie is still slept on because of the subject matter but it really is a great film. Holiday was an amazing parental figure/friend and I think that's the point, that you don't have to be perfect in society's standards to be a good parent. Wanda was a spot on crackhead and your sucky sucky sound effect....🤣🤣🤣😭

Fun fact: Ving Rhames's performance in Holiday Heart was inspired by well known actor by the name of Jack Lemmon. In 1959, Jack Lemmon did a movie by the name of "Some Like It Hot" with Marilyn Monroe, where he was dressed in Drag the whole movie. Jack Lemmon is one of Ving Rhames Idols growing up and Ving Rhames even went so far as to give Jack Lemmon his golden globe back in the day just to show appreciation to his idol. Jack Lemmon even told Ving Rhames that what he did was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for him. Much Respect to Ving Rhames paying homage to his idol.

@Happy Thoughts Ving Rhames was just paying respects to his idol. He was probably looking up to this man since he was a little kid. If most people don't like what he did, then maybe when they win a golden globe they can take that up with him until then they can just STFU!!

Yes he was still gay but still whoop yo ass! I had a cousin like Holiday. This movie meant so much to me when it came out. Ving Rhames has the range and that's why he is certified till this day!!!

Sadly, I believe that everyone in the Black Community can relate to these characters, being that Crack has touched every Black person in some way shape or form, either you know someone who is or was a crackhead, someone who sold it, someone who's children were affected by it....etc and so on. Also, you probably know someone gay whether they were a drag queen or not. Yes, gay choir director...stereotype, but usually true.

Not my cup of tea but I'm not one of those people who bash dudes for any role they play. I imagine if you're an actor then you want to show the ability to play a multitude of roles. I want our people to be as free to express themselves artistically as any other people. We tend to bash our folks though. I've never heard anyone bash Robin Williams for playing Mrs. Doubtfire or Dustin Hoffman for playing Tootsie. You hit the nail on the head with the Pulp Fiction role too. With that said, I couldn't get with this one. It's not that I would never check it out but there are a million other films I would watch before this one. A choice between Holiday Heart and watching Karate Kid for the millionth time and I'm going with Daniel Son. Still a good review though.

Happy New Year SR.....I'm currently binge watching your reviews! I'm glad u decided to go thru with reviewing this movie. You are so right...Ving Rhames has played many gay roles, and I guess because he was openly feminine in this one, it was demeaning for his manhood! Just like Alfre, Samuel L and Chris play good crackheads, Ving plays a mean gay man, and these are roles HE chose to play!!!!

Anyone that thinks black men are being emasculated ask yourself this. Why is Robin Williams celebrated for wearing a dress but black men are shamed? The homophobia is real and we as a people really don't notice how much we promote it.
@tr2404
@tr2404 Жыл бұрын
Please don't compare Mrs. Doubtfire to Holiday Heart. Robin Williams puts on dress so he could see his children. Ving Rhames is playing a gay man who dresses in drag and befriends a dysfunctional family. Not the same. Actually, this movie depicts and reinforces a lot of black stereotypes. Not sure why it's even a celebrated movie.

I did check it out on KZbin for free and boy...This movie could have been something good and heartwarming but instead took a weird turn into wacky madness from Wanda. I did like Ving's performance as Holiday and he was trying to make the movie work while it was turning into a silly Lifetime movie with over-the-top antics, Wanda was so funny even though that wasn't the plan for the movie because it was trying to be serious with the Wanda, Niki, and Holiday trying to be a happy family but it just went south thanks to Wanda's druggie craziness that was funny at points.
