Video is very helpful when it comes to songwriting, but it definitely doesn't help you come up with a vocal melody whatsoever.

I agree but to be fair, the question itself cannot be answered specifically. Like what is he suppose to say, take the sq root of your tonic and add three steps after each quarter note? It's a vague question to begin with. All he could provide was structure advice. A melody is like water, it flows. All he can do is give you different cups to hold it in but ultimately there is no "formula" only strategies and techniques.
@d-rockanomaly92434 жыл бұрын
@@lxf9914 Nah come on, this video is shit. He didn't give any real strategies or trechniques. Rhyming? Intervals? "using intervals" is literally just changing notes. You can't teach melodic intuition, but there is TONS of practical, specific advice you can give other than this general bullshit he's using to try sell his book. Stuff they can actually try out and see if it works fort them. Off the top of my head: Match ascending chord progressions with descending vocal melodies, and in the chorus, match the melodies. Or how about using dissonance in a pre-chorus and resolving on the opening note of the chorus for a totally satisfying transition? How about switching vocal octaves for just ONE line in every verse? Don't make backup vocals simply one octave up/down, use different, complimentary notes. Use an 8 bar melody over two 4/4 measures. These are things people can put in their arsenal. And there are an infinite number of tips like this. People like practical tips. His advice is like telling a hockey player to be good he should score goals.

I've always wanted to write strange melodies like deftones radiohead or tool. But should i focus on non standard tones (2 4 6 for instance) related to tonic of hole song (and then write chords) or use them but related to prepared earlier chords?

I've already a vocal melody. I know the key and even notes. My problem is how I create background music for the melody. I tried adding the same melody in piano as background music. It harmonises very well with vocal melody but doesn't sound as background music. I'm totally newbie. A detailed video about background music creation would be kind help.

Garageband is a good starting point but look into Logic Pro, you can create anything, if you don't have a Mac then there are other digital audio workstations available (DAWs), watch a few tutorials and play around with it and you'll be golden. I've been playing around with logic for a couple weeks now and I've made a song I'm super happy with (just need vocals), sounds radio quality. However, I have literally been on it about 10 hours a day ahaha, hope this helps!

You have to create a chord progression with chords that contain the notes in your melody. For example, say your melody goes "E-C-C" for the first bar and "D-E-B" for the second bar. Your chord progression can be Cmaj for the first bar and D9 for the second. You just have to find chords that fit the songs in your melody.
@SSS-xf7zi7 жыл бұрын
Luiz Souza I can't thank you enough. Is it a good idea to change chords every bar?
@lucarousseau46196 жыл бұрын
Try to have a chord progression that's rhythmically interesting. Some artists that do this well are The Neighborhood, Billie Eilish, and Any jazz musician ever (pull inspiration by listening to the backing music). That determines when to change your chords. Personally I think it's interesting to change chords mid-bar and even mid-measure if done well, but if you can't figure it out just change every bar. A common lazy man's way to write chord progressions is to have a chord lasting two bars and two chords lasting one bar, with the longer one first or last, never center (It sounds weird every time I've tried it). As far as harmonies go, just find the note in the melody where you want your chord to land, and write that note's chord in the key you're in, and if that sounds wonky, just try the next note in your melody and so on and so on.

Great video. I have never touched an instrument in my life, can’t sing a damn, ZERO musical theory background yet I somehow get a lot of what you were saying. The only thing is I get Melodie’s in my head that are very simple and when I try to sing them they obviously sound horrible as I’m not in tune. Do you know of an app that could help me maybe transcribe my melody into the notes? Not sure if there’s anything that might do that abd auto correct at the same time to something that makes musical sense. Btw gonna look into more of your videos
