Pretty late for this; but I think the television theory explains this one. Like the T Rex and every other time potty died all happened on the TV set, so it wasn't real in the context to the episode. Was just acting for host shenanigans. But the canon, was also one of these planned stunts, went wrong and it was too late. My theory is he was supposed to land in the water and was to be picked up by the show staff, but he landed on the island and nobody found him until it was too late.

I love this theory but there is one massive hole to it why doesn't the flying Dutchman haunt SpongeBob all the time he clearly has all the Time in the world to do if this was the coming to take revenge on SpongeBob for ignoring him his whole life wouldn't he haunt him all the time most of the times at the Dutchman Haunts SpongeBob is usually because he was asked to the only time wasn't the episode ghost host but even that I can argue against. That mischievous smile that's the Dutchman showed it's just a demonstration of who he is as an individual someone who hunts people for fun. You can use the argument that out of all the houses he could have went to he went to SpongeBob's but my argument is that SpongeBob with outside , the Dutchman saw him outside and couldn't really think of anything better to do so he decides to haunt SpongeBob. Or at least that's my interpretation of it.

I see your point, but I wouldn't consider this a plot hole. Maybe he's been doing it so long, he now just enjoys scaring everyone. But the biggest piece of evidence for this is in Ghost Host when he spends a lot of time at the beginning to scare SpongeBob, but it doesn't really work, so maybe he gave up, realizing there is no point in haunting spongebob if he doesn't care. So he resorts to other ways of getting back at him, dropping the anchor on his house, collecting his soul when he was given the opportunity. Or maybe the patchy side of him is at war with the flying Dutchman and doesn't allow himself to do anything, but sometimes he can't hold back the desire to mess with him somehow. So the Dutchman doesn't actively haunt spongebob, but rather just gets bits of revenge when the opportunity presents itself. While I recognize the issue, I don't think it's a plot hole because it can be explained off in different ways that don't break the theory.
