After owning and using the Holley Sniper EFI on my 1990 Third Gen Chevy Camaro with a small block Chevy 350 and a Hyperspark ignition system, Flowmaster mufflers, B&M shifter I am doing an honest review of my good and bad experiences so far with it.
In an attempt to keep this review video short I'm only covering the best and worst experiences I've had so far in the 1+ years I've owned and used the Holley Sniper EFI.
The big take aways from my review are to really figure out what it will cost and how much work will it take to install the Sniper on your car. Also if you have a reliable Carburetor on your car I recommend leaving it on unless your really itching for some new tech on your hot rod!

I have installed 3 black Holley sniper units. All 3 were replaced because of the same issue. They sprayed the black powder coating inside of the unit. the easiest way to see is to take off the left side cap that the return fuel line connects to. then pull out the diaphragm that's behind it. You will see it has black powder coating inside of it where it is exposed to gas and it will peel. 2 of the 3 just wouldn't run after the screen on the diaphragm clogged the 3rd saw fuel pressure issues and just went WOT on me with zero throttle control, that was scary. If you have a black unit check that out, Holley replaced all mine with a brand new one but they send out a new one with the same issue. I would recommend not getting powder coated units for replacement.

I'm out west in Arizona and that was a big concern of mine I've never had a Holley double pumper mechanical secondaries fail on me ever, and I keep a spare fuel pump and a crate that I have with my tools and oiling charging cables and things like that I was looking into doing this on my car but I would have to change the the tank electric fuel pump all that stuff and I watched a couple other videos and I'm getting close to $2,000 and isn't including I mechanic doing the work so I decided to go with the MSD box with my distributor the MSD box I got has a dial that mounts inside the car and you can retard the timing and everything yourself and then I put a air fuel mixture gauge and just make adjustments on it I wanted to do this because I'll West it's 900 feet above sea level and then two hours away it could be 5000 feet 3 hours away could be 6000 or nine thousand feet above sea level but I'm just thinking of just sticking with the Holley HP high performance double Pumper instead they run between five and seven hundred bucks I want to do it so I wouldn't have to make adjustment settings for the nitrous and for the elevation changes but the more I look into this it just doesn't seem at least for right now that that is worth the money also when I don't know he didn't mention it in this but I watched another video and what the guy did they get rid of the excessive heat on the the sniper system that he had is the same thing that I did with my carburetor and that's put a heat spacer and their heat spacers so they dissipate the Heat and you can actually run pretty hard and actually touch the carburetor without getting your hand burned main thing was for cold starts and altitude changes that's the reason I was going to do it but coldstar thing I don't really care about that much specially out here the biggest thing was the altitude changes but I'd rather carry a timing light air and fuel mixture gauge and I haven't 81 Camaro and even though it came with a throttle body it doesn't have a electric fuel pump I'm looking for any advice I can get whether or not it's worth the money now or wait for a while until they work some of the bugs out of them I think the Terminator ones were really nice oh, the other thing that I was a pro was that it would adjust for electric fans hookups and for air conditioning believe it or not for having a pretty hairy motor I still got a AC for on the highway

A little trick for running a return line on a tank that doesn't have a nipple for one just put a y splitter in the line before it hits the gas pump and connect it there. Since it's before the pump any excess fuel pressure will be dumped back into the tank and your pump will just pick up what it's already picking up. Also these may be expensive but since they improve your miles per gallon overtime they will end up paying for themselves when it comes to fuel savings so keep that in mind

Im an electrician and pro computer builder. Ive seen many a computer burn out from over heating. thei bios[basic operation system] comes with parameters that typically throttle down activity aat about 60 C nd totally shutdown around 90 C. i would add a heatsink to the ecu cover as well as some form of underhhood ventilation. or sooner or later that ecu could /will cook AGAIN in the underhood temps. maybe take a heat laser tester and see what its operation temperature is under normal conditions.
@ZanesGarage
@ZanesGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Heat definitely didn't help that ecu at all that's for sure. The previous engine setup had turbos and the underhood temps were very hot. Now the engine is n/a and the engine bay stays at a normal temp with lots of air movement. Hopefully this ecu won't have any issues! @@dazednconfused3171 Not a huge difference but it does feel more responsive than the carburetor during regular everyday driving. I was running a 1406 Edlebrock and that thing would have a small bog down at some stop lights but the holley sniper almost feels like if I have direct fuel injection. It feels more like a "modern" v8. If you want a more modern feel for your ride then get the holley sniper, if you want to drag race then keep the carburetor. Also I have to mention that the fuel pump supplied with the kit is extremely loud lol I'm considering on getting a different fuel tank to where I can install the fuel pump internally.

With any EFI system you have to have the cleanest ground for the ECU. You also must have a good 12v source. Test the circuit you want to tie in to by loading it with a head light or something that puts a light load on the circuit. Most ECU issues are caused by poor power and ground than actual ECU failures.

TPI is something many tuners don't know how or don't wish to fool with anymore... They are all on the LSX stuff and holley setups, I ran into this on my 383 stealth ram build even back in 2002... Everyone back them wanted to do mail order drive 500mi+ for tuning, now you can swap over with a custom engine only harness, pull ya factory harness out and buy yourself a c100 connector and basically build and pin a custom new harness sans factory computer, that way you can revert anytime, and not butcher the factory harness. It's what i plan to do.. I am hoping to find a 91-92 formula TBI setup, or something similar that doesn't have TPI and the factory harness mess, makes it simpler, but if i am stuck with TPI engines i will just unplug the factory harness and all the switches, sensors, etc that i won't need and either build myself a custom harness for a LSX or holley computer system. Easier all the way around man...

If you don't know what you're doing just pay someone to install it... With EFI like this there is no tuning, like any modern car a tune up is just replacing service parts. Does Holley over charge for them, sure the whole setup certainly cost the less $100 to make but that's supply and demand.

Nice video and I would agree that if you have a carb that is working good, keep it on the car. Another year review would be awesome to see if anything has changed. I had a Holley Terminator on my 1975 Trans Am and had nothing but problems. 3 tuners and changing out several parts and still no luck. I'm ripping off all the EFI stuff and going to a new carb system. Once the EFI systems get better I may take the plunge but this has been painful for me. Reality is about $2000+ to install the EFI correctly with the fuel system and even more if you are not able to do it yourself. I found them to work well for a while then start to fail. Carbs may be old school but they still can run on 500+ HP cars. Thanks for the video!
@gkauto1959

exactly my sentiments! turns out they will run ok for awhile but then come the problems! when you realize the true cost of these things and compare them to a $300 AFB it makes no sense to buy one when you can customize that afb so easily to your car and motor. nobody wants a set up that is gonna leave you stranded, like these always do!

@@homevideos4749 And it will continue to outperform the EFI anyday! If you like the simplicity of carb, you might want to look over the edelbrock AFB real close, their carb is trouble free as possible, no fuel below the gasket line and user easy to tune to your exact needs. I have a 305 sbc on a camaro and just used their 500cfm carb, it because of the small Venturis is very responsive and pulls cleanly and gives me 27 mpg at a steady 2000 rpm. the Holley is a better reply to the EFI but the AFB will charm you with how easy it is to take apart, replace jets and needles and give you the responsiveness you crave without the Holleys being temperamental and at times difficult to diagnose. Glad you dumped the EFI, though, that was a smart move.

@@homevideos4749 They make an 800 cfm AFB for cars like that, I know cause I built an 11 sec 72 Nova that got 114 mph through the lights at the end of the quarter mile. Just fatten the jets until you get the power you want, then play with the rods until you still get the power you want but you get crisp response without dumping too much fuel and it stays that way until you decide otherwise. You can even leave the carb still sitting atop the motor to do just that, only 9 screws and the top of the carb is off and you now have access. Of course I outgrew the need for speed ad now just happily cruise around in my 74.

If I wanted injection for an old car that never offered injection, I'd head over to the local auto bone-yard and pull an injected mill. Yes, the install will be much more involved, but when you do get it running, it will be OE reliable with parts available from the dealer or Autozone.

I’m looking at this EFI setup for my 82 Z28 I’m running an electronic fuel pump right now and want to put true dual exhaust with single chamber flow masters & x-Pipe first if possible. A few details to work out but I like the Holley Snipers
@ZanesGarage

That should be a pretty easy install with that fuel pump already in. We had to cut and weld up a custom true dual exhaust for my Camaro not the easiest job but it works!

Zanes Garage that’s what I figured that it would be somewhat straight forward with already having an electronic fuel pump. I just got my car out of storage after 12 years last year and I’m still running short tube headers with y-pipe to the stock exhaust so it’s definitely time for a change I’m going to look into the true dual setup along with the EFI and a few other things

Did you have to do anything special to rid yourself of any ECM codes from the GM ECU? I have a 92 Silverado 350 cid TBI and will be putting a Sniper EFI on it. The old TBI is crap - hard to get decent replacement parts for and I've had issues with it for the last several years. You can't get a new one, so I decided on the Sniper. I just wanted to know if you ran into any issues "marrying" the 2 ECUs to monitor engine diagnostics/performance. Thanks so much.

My 370 with 10.25 comp is hard to start on the first initial start with my open top 750 street hp holley. i hope this sniper sorts that out. sick of changing spark plugs.

Hey so I have to have a Holley super sniper and the hyper spark ignition and all that. Long story short everything was running good. I parked it one night. Got up and went to start it and it cranks but won't fire. I sent it to.my.mechanic and he checked all the grounds and even changed my ignition at the key. He couldn't find anything. Any advice

I recently bought a '78 gmc with a fairly low mileage goodwrench 350 in it. Already have a set of vortec heads and intake ready to put on and was planning to swap the carb and cam as well, but I'm really considering running this efi instead of going back with another carburetor because I have to drive the truck about 6.5 hours north of me in January and I feel like this might be more reliable and show me far better mpg, any suggestions?
@gkauto1959
@gkauto1959 Жыл бұрын
It will be less reliable, leave yo stranded and not have that much of an advantage over a new $300 AFB from edelbrock. The true cost of these fuckers run to over $2,000 and even then, they get problematic over time, especially when those Chinese manufactured ECU quit! but what the hell, go ahead and blow your money, well be reading your horror story here in a couple months, everyone loves drama!

it doesn't matter if it's carburetor, throttle body, or port injection you still need outside air. under hood heat kills performance and is why a carburetor needs adjustment.

I am building a Ford truck on my channel. I have a fuel tank still in the box and will welding in a return line and vent bungs in the tank. The engine is a 351C newly rebuilt. Basically, everything is new. The carb was shot and couldn't even be rebuilt. So I'll be installing a new tank, lines, and harness all from scratch. I plan on the truck being a daily driver and will not be racing it. The new carb will cost about $400 with the pump and the Sniper will be about $1200 with fuel delivery. Either way, I'm spending money but nothing else is an issue because it will be designed to run whatever fuel system I choose. Is it worth it to go EFI?
@ZanesGarage
@ZanesGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a fun build! And I think at that point it's really what kind of look your going for with the truck. Some people think anything other then a carb on an old car is horrible. I think they both can operate great if they are tuned right. The Sniper is just a lot easier to get right quicker. Also I ran my Sniper on an HEI ignition without issue I can't speak for a points ignition if that's what your planning on. I was having carb issues and it was worth it to me if that sort of answers it!
@RIPbiker13
@RIPbiker13 4 жыл бұрын
No points. Magnetic conversion in the distributor regardless of fuel system. I also have a new aluminum radiator waiting to go in and the tie in with the electric fans is awesome. Unless you tell me not to, I think the Sniper will be on my list. The truck is a resto mod. It was too far gone for a restoration. Crown vic and modern brakes and a serpentine conversion on the engine. Looks are irrelevant.
