I think the amazing thing about this, is that it could be about all of it. Cloud, Tifa , Aerith, Zack, even Barret. For that reason I dont believe it is about them specifically but about the story that is Final Fantasy VII.

However I believe that Sephiroths ability to control cloud is going to be MUCH stronger then in the orginal and rather then Sephiroth killing her, Cloud controlled by Sephiroth will kill Aerith Just a hunch but playing the remake I noticed that scenes were in the orginal Zacks consciousness or persona that was guiding cloud. For instance when he first landed unconscious in Aeriths church Those scenes now have been deliberately changed where it is overtly sephiroth talking to Cloud. There were multiple instances where Cloud had to be stopped from outright executing people (Tifa stopped cloud from killing Johnny and The whispers directly had to intervene to stop him from killing Reno) I think whatever Sephiroth has done, had diminished the effect Zacks imprint has on cloud leaving him more susceptible to him And let’s be honest, the only thing that Sephiroth would enjoy more then the torment of killing Aerith in front of Cloud……is forcing Cloud to kill Aerith

I would rule out the possibility of this song being about Tifa because of the "But I, I know that you're long gone" This is *not* about Tifa, she is alive and well, Aerith is the one who is gone. Also Nojima said "I interpreted [Hollow] as “a ballad for a man who lost something important to him." In the game Caith Sith predicted that Cloud would lose something very dear to him (Aerith).

@@seventwarior They both deserve it. Aerith never had any good friend in her life. Everyone was being rude or scared because of her being half cetra. That's why she cared so much about Zack. He was kind towards her but he always prioritized his job as SOLDIER over her. She was being so lonely that even turks became uhhh idk how to explain this. Also we don't count children from the sector because they were nice towards her, yeah I couldn't say anything about "great friendship beetwen them and Aerith". After getting out of the church because of Reno, she thought he could be her friend, especially knowing that he didn't ask for money and accepted being a bodyguard for a date. She instantly started to befriend him in many ways including even talking about herself (she doesn't like to talk about herself so this is meaningful). She also wants to spent as much time with him as she can. Idk what else to say, anyways she was always lonely. Her best friend was Elmyra. Cloud is also a loner. He wants to have friends but everyone distances themselfs from him. For example, Tifa never let him join her group of friends. He was treated like an outcast. His mental status is horrible because he has no friends, no one likes him and everyone blames him for accident with Tifa (she fell of the mountain and everyone says it was his fault). He decides to leave Nibleheim and makes his famous promise to Tifa. He's a grunt when Zack events are happening, blah blah blah (Zack was also his first friend). He feels ashamed that he didn't manage to complete his promise so he's wearing his helmet. He completed the strenght test and failed a mentality one. Then Zack dies, and his mind becomes a vegetable. Anyways, his mental status sucked and his only friend died. Cloud meets Aerith. He enjoys spending time with her, mostly because she doesn't push him away (everyone, even Tifa are pushing him away at some point) and instead, she tries her best to stay close with him. Eventually, they both develop feelings towards each other. Conclusion: Cloud's past is as same as Aerith's if not even worser lol. His mental status is trash and he doesn't even know how to communicate well with others. King of conclusions or conclusion of conclusions, idk: They both deserve each other.

Its about all three. The most face value is Aerith. Level 2 is Zack, and I think this is the most poignant take. Level 3 is its Aerith or Zack to Zack or Aerith. Level 4 is its (the real) Cloud to Tifa before he stops drowning in his lost sense of self. The reality is that Nobuo Uetmatsu is an absolute genius artist and this song is his love letter to one of the titles he will be remembered for for hundreds of years.
