I think it forms a pillar because the crystals form behind the player and then off the other crystals going backwards creating the effect of the crystals charging up, so when it's going upwards, the crystals aren't building off of eachother but keep on going off the player, this is my best assumption

yup. this is probably just a smart way to prevent crystal charging into wall or off ledges. it checks where the last one was places instead of being a set distance. and it checks if it needs to move closer to the player to not be in an invalid location. that second check means not every crystal is at the same distance which makes the first bit needed. the fact it ignores crystals at different heights could be a preventative measure. this way when one glitches out and places off screen it won't be obvious in game because the next one takes it place.

I think it's a common thing to do but I've noticed there aren't a lot elevators that are so openly placed like the one at dirtmouth. And I only noticed this detail at that elevator because you are most likely to crystal dash from there since you can quickly get to the howling cliffs area to the left or crystal peak to the right
