"Way up above lies your chosen 'pure' knight. The only one spared was the one with no mind. For you, for your heart, for your love did they lie? Pretend all is fine as their mind rots inside." It is heavily implied that the Pure Vessel was not truly hollow. It was not able to completely keep the Radiance's infection from leaking out into Hallownest like it was supposed to. Whether or not it was truly hollow from it's conception, but at the end of the Path of Pain, we witness a memory of the Pale King and the Vessel sharing a moment in the White Palace. The theory I subscribe to is that the Pale King grew attached to the young Vessel, and vice versa, which caused the Vessel to slowly grow a mind and to lose it's true purity. The Pale King became ashamed that he allowed this to happen, and decided to go along with the plan anyway, and locked the memory of their love in the most hidden and impassible part of his palace. I love this line here, as it directly addresses this rather obscure fact about the Pale King and accuses him of screwing up the ritual that so many creatures sacrificed themselves for.

Honestly im trying to see this from the Pale kings Perspective, aka one of rightful paranoia against another god of light of extreme power seeking revange, and all i can feel is that while the message and all that is thrown against him is true, the guy mustve been truly desperate, he had done incredible stuff built his kingdom from near scratch extanded his dominion took over as sorta god-ruler, and his last rival was a fellow god that wanted revange, except the very mind he gave his kingdom to think with was also its weakness as it could prey on their very thoughts and feelings to corrupt them, so he had no choice but to find a way to get rid of it ASAP, thought that going by instincts without thoughts of feelings would be the best way to seal it and with his wife started experimenting without success as countless of their children thought or felt, which normally would be fine but in this specific case it couldnt work, it just couldnt, it stressed and strained the relationship between husband and wife and its bound to make him even more stressed as the urgency became even more important he HAD to steel his heart and keep going, at one point it had to pay off otherwise it was all doomed, till finally, a vessel seemed to fit the bill, didnt think, didnt feel, a perfect one after ALL the sacrifices, it all paid off, he could finally lower his guard, the Radiance would be a problem no longer and he could finally try to fix everything he had to do to get there, unfortunately, he relaxed to much, the vessel he birthed was certainly perfect at first, but it develloped feelings, for him, him of all beings that cursed all of its siblings back to the abyss to be forever abandonned and forgotten, and the problem was that at that point no one else loved him, they respected him admired him maybe, but no love was to be found from the being that willingly killed its own children to pay a price and be sacrficied anyway So of course, he shared those feelings, which cursed the perfect one to fall apart, to be just as imperfect as the rest if not more, at which point he knew, he couldnt just kill his last child and definitly the last one in the world that genuilly loved him, his heart couldnt take it, but Radiance was a problem and ditching the plan entirely just couldnt be an option considering its awful cost Thankfully he wasnt entirely alone, his wife may understandbly hate him now, but his Kingdom could still help and at this point even his own previous work would have to pay the price for its existance, so he brought along his advisor telling them they needed to be sacrificed to save the kingdom as a last effort should the Vessel fail inits duty one day, after all they were the strongests in said kingdom in both mind and body and therefore if they were put into eternal sleep they should be able to retain it, causing one to force him to make yet another child not giving him breathing room with his wife, and the other putting in actual argument as tk why this last urgent plan he made wasnt that great. Only for it all to fail, his life work wasted, his kingdom ruined, his familly ruined and most definitly all hating him, his last loyal servants slowly fading of falling to its light. He was never dad of the year material but i genuilly think its not all his fault if he was up againt Radiance, only mostly but not all his fault he just tried to hard lol

I think what he don't knew about the Hollow Knight's feelings, in four cut dialogues of the Oniric Nail in the Pure Vessel fight he say: "Do not think..." "Do not Speak..." "Do not hope..." "Do not..." "..." he tries to hide his imperfection, about de Path of Pain, the Seal of Binding have the answer, the description say: "Used to contain a powerfull force, or to preserve something of great importance", Why the Pale King want preserve that memory? Probably the Hollow Knight tried to seal his feelings with him or keep that memory that even if it meant not being what it should be, he treasured. Sorry for the long text and my bad english

@@blake_thegod9461ARE YOU KIDDING!? IT'LL BE A NIGHTMARE IF EFFIN' TIKTOK FINDS THIS! I love this too much to let it into the grasp of literal brainrot incarnate. Do you know what they'll do to this masterpiece? The exact same as they do to everything, immediately find every possible way to ruin or destroy it. Tictok always taints or stains anything it gets even near to in short time. I like the idea of this mastery going viral, but NEVER THROUGH TICTOK! They almost always resort to warping the original message with the unbelievably stupid collection of bingers on that site, typically resorting to r34, misinterpretation, and even just making idiotic "true theories" just because they can or because they cannot comprehend these types of things with their two shared braincells. Good thought and goal, awful execution. I'm quite sorry for anything that felt like me insulting you-although not sorry for insulting Tictok at all-I'm just very passionate about not letting things get ruined for about as long as I'm able, despite that time being very limited. I am also quite passionate about not letting Tiktoc have any effect on me. It generally just rots minds and essentially is an endless factory for dopamine-dependent zombies who have no actual thought put into even their thoughts and just seem to accept whatever 3 year old or idiot's opinion or so called "facts" about anything. Like "the world will end in 3 months because the sun will blow up!" First of all, the sun won't blow up, it'll just inflate then shrink, both in a dramatic change of size an in a cosmically short time(a few billion years from now). Sorry for the rant, I just really strongly think this masterpiece getting into the hands of Tictok, the braindead as it would be forever shattered and stained by a child's sh-- covered hands. I also really like insulting Tictok an absurd amount for some reason. Anyways do you agree with me, are you angry after reading this? Do YOU have any points you'd like to make or share. I'd love to hear any feedback you've got, even opposing opinions!

LYRICS in case you don't have the reflexes to read the bottom text like me: Ohhh... Ashes to ashes, your dust into dust. Telling yourself that you do what you must, oh anything to keep your kingdom's trust, monarch eternal as we slowly rust. How much is too much, oh just what is the cost? To keep up this faded and cursed Omelas? We lived, and we died, so that you could pause time. We hope you enjoyed your last subject's applause. One, two, three, you need sacrifice to seal your damned demons away. Cause pain and death, it's fine as long as this kingdom's mine live to see just one more day. Please, just one more try I've got it this time Cause there's no cost too great. Think of the future. Think of the past. Do you remember. Do you regret? Think of your children, think of your men. Someday you'll have to pay up your debt. Try to forget us. We dare you to try, cause we will remind you: this isn't goodbye. Look to the future, look to the past! Do you remember, your graveyard? Silently slowly, we keep up the fight. Given some time, we just might set things right - We try, and we try, to climb up to the light. With corpses beneath you, do you sleep at night? Way up above lies your chosen 'pure' knight. The only one spared was the one with no mind. For you, for your heart, for your love did they lie? Pretend all is fine as their mind rots inside. One, two, three, you need sacrifice to keep your damned demons away. Cause pain and death, it's fine as long as this kingdom's mine live to see just one more day. Please, just one more try I've got it this time Cause there's no cost too great. Think of the future. Think of the past. Do you remember. Do you regret? Think of your children, think of your men. Building on the above... also couldn't be from Radiance because... 1, Rad didn't have a kingdom, they weren't a monarch, they were a god. 2. "you need sacrifice to seal your damn demons away" Rad wasn't trying to seal anything away, they were the one being sealed away. 3. "No Cost Too Great" is a line from, or at the very least about, The Pale King, if my understanding is correct. It's seen (*spoilers*) on the climb out of the abyss in the flashback climb. If you don’t wanna read my freaking essay’s worth of text I don’t recommend pressing read more 🥲* I need this I’m always imagining at parts like 1:13 it switches from the current singer, who is almost definitely the siblings of the abyss *(if anyone asks, I can provide reasons if I get the notification lol, KZbin is unreliable 🙃)* to the pale king, desperately trying to justify his actions but only falling deeper into his own regrets, being manifested as the void itself or whatever. If I was even a tiny bit good at animating I swear I’d do this I have *so many ideas* And at 1:04 the singer(s) may be mocking the pale king before he actually starts singing, since “cause pain and death it’s fine” sounds like they are showing him how he sounds with his plans, and he responds by vainly trying to retaliate ( 1:13 ) And the setting in general may be the pale king, sitting on his throne being weighed down by all he’s done, and *(like I said I believe the singer(s) are the siblings)* they are showing him all of his memories, pretty much guilt tripping him until he falls to his own guilt. Hahaaaa I write too much 🫠

@@starseer986Actually, aside from the name, there's one more piece of evidence that this is 100% directed to the Pale King: the Omelas reference. The plot of The ones that walk away from Omelas is that there's this perfect society, but it depends on one single child living in misery. Can't really apply that to the Radiance, because it's neither a perfect society nor a child living in misery, but it's a perfect match for the Pale King. Also the part about the Hollow Knight being ,,your'' chosen pure knight doesn't apply to the Radiance

Wow, I don't know if I'll be able of say how much I like this song, but I'm going to try. I really love how sad, regretful and even angered the song feels, from the very begining it shows perfectly everything it tries to represent, from the desperation of the Pale King for saving his kingdom to the resentment of the vessels. Lines like "Telling yourself you do what you must, anything to keep this kingdom's trust, monarch eternal as we slowly rust." "We lived and we died so that you could pause time. We hope you enjoyed your last subjects aplause" really gives the feeling it should give, and it just increases as the song progresses, with the "One, two, three, you need sacrifice to seal your dammed demons away. Cause pain and death, is fine as long as this kingdom's mine live to see just one more day" as we see the Dreamers, the monument of the Hollow Knight and the empty throne of the Pale King. And then just when I think it can't get more intense comes the "Please, just one more try I've got it this time Cause there's no cost too great" which not only has the very well implemented dialogue of the Pale King, but it really makes you feel how truly desperate he was. Taking advantage that I mentioned the reference, they are incredibly well implemented in this song, being explicit like the "No cost to great" or subtle like "How much is to much, just what is the cost?", I also love how the kingdom is refered to as "Omelas" now that I know what it means. Then the song gets more silent and sad as it says "Think of the future. Think of the past. Do you remember. Do you regret?" as it shows the corpse of the Wyrm and the statue of the Radiance. One is something from the past that marked the future and the other is what makes everyone regret sealed her into oblivon. Both related to the Pale King, one way or another. Then comes the tragic "Think of your children, think of your men. Someday you'll have to pay up your debt." as the Abyss is showed, where all his children got locked and abandoned. Then it suddently becomes furious as the Vessels show their remorse; "Try to forget us. We dare you to try, cause we we'll remind you: this isn't goodbye. Look to the future, look to the past! Do you remember, your graveyard" as some vessels corpes appear, but not only that, also the corpse of Isma, the house of the Grey Mourner and even a room of the White Lady, like a way of show that not only the vessels but almost everyone in Hallownest is somewhat remorseful at the Pale King for abandoning them! Then there's no more lyrics, just the intense music as we see the Hollow Knight being corrupted by the infection, and continues as The Knight arrives to Hallownest. When the lyrics came back they're the Vessels singing about how, even after everything, they keep on fighting; "Silently, slowly, we keep up the fight. Given some time, we just might set things right - We try, and we try, to climb into the light." That part really feels like the refreshing shadow in the burning sun. Then, after that tragic yet heroic effort, they antagonise the Pale King again by saying "With corpses beneath you, do you sleep at night?" The music gets tragic again when talking about the Hollow Knight; "Way up above lies your chosen 'pure' knight." I love how they say 'pure' in a sarcastic way. "The only one spare was the one with no mind" sounds amazing and, as other comment says; it's such a raw line. But maybe not so much as the "For you, for your heart, for you love, did they lie? Pretend all it's fine as their mind rots inside.". That line it's just a whole another level, I don't know how to say it, it's just... really meaningful and accurate. When the songs repeats itself in the "One, two, three" onwards is more hurtful than before, especially the part where we see the corpses of the Soul Master fight, I had NEVER before thought the possibility that the Pale King let the Soul Sanctrum do it's experiments until he regret it and stopped them. If that's true, it really changes my perspective about that part of the game. Oh, and then the part that represents how desperate was the Pale King is just as hurtful as before, or even more! And then we're back with the "Think of the future." part, but this time with the Hollow Knight. I thought when it says "Do you regret?" it was going to show The Hollow Knight stabbing themself, but.... no, it showed nothing on screen, which I find really good in this case, there's no need to make enfasis on that, but in the possible regret of the Pale King. We see the Hollow Knight again in the "Think of your children". Now that I think about it, the "Try to forget us." onwards could be both for the Pale King and The Radiance, since both tried to get rid of/forget the vessels, but then they came back to make them pay their debt, 'casue they will remind them, that wasn't goodbye. "Think of the future. Think of the past. Do you remember, you're graveyard?" could refer to how the Vessels are, in some way, showing the Pale King that it was a mistake abandon them in the past, since now their here to save the future, and that he should have remember more the graveyard that is both the Abyss and Hallownest. But in can also, at the same time, be for The Radiance, about how the future she wants is uselless and how her acts for the past are finally going to make her pay. Especially since it starts when The Knight is about to Challenge The Radiance. I don't know if that was intencional, but it fits very well. I gotta say, the music is just PERFECT in this part, even when The Knight falls to the Void is well synchronized. xD It's just amazing how the music intensifies as The Knight goes on and the song ends in a perfect way as it says "Our voices will cry out again!" Now I want to say that not only the writting and editing are fantastic, but obviously so are the composition, the vocals and art. Everything about this is just amazing! The end says "Thanks for listening" but geez, thank YOU and everyone involved for letting us hear this passionate song about this amazing game! :D

I really like the comment and the effort you put in to make it, but i disagree with one part of it. When you talk about the graveyard line at the end, you mention that it applies to the radiance because the future they want is useless and they will receive retribution for the past. I dont think this fits with the lore, as the intent of the Radiance, and the reason behind them making them infection, is actually far from fitting either of those descriptions. In fact, it is implied (enough for it to be cannon) that what the Radiance did with the infection was not intentional, but rather an attempt to reach out to past followers through some form of telepathy, however, their minds, created by the Pale King (who i do not need to remind you of his arrogance, possessiveness, and obsessiveness) resisted the telepathy, causing the radiance to use more and more (unstable, due to years of non-worship) power, until it eventually mutated into a deadly infection of the mind (this process is shown pretty clearly with the moss vagabonds, they are shown to be trying to listen to “the light” and then become infected). Then, there is their wishes for the future, it is also somewhat nearly outright stated, and also implied as part of what I said above, that their intent was to return to how they were before, not specifically the religious leader of Hallownest, but rather one with the ability to reach that position through effort, a chance the arrival of the Pale King robbed them of.

@@wingdinggaster6737 I've heard before about the possibility that the infection was unintentional, but I don't recall any in-game details that implicate it as clearly as you say. The only ones that kinda fit that idea are those talking about how is a mistake to try and defy nature. Maybe it's just that I'm misinterpreting the dialogues that imply that, but I don't know, could you tell me what clues we have to believe that?

No heart to yearn. Now forced to haunt. Do not think. Do not sink. Do not speak. Do not weep. Show no pain. Show no fear. For the king. You must adhere. No voice to scream. No tears to cry. Drawing closer to the light. With nothing in its empty eye. Way up above. sleeps the chosen "pure knight". The only one spared, Was the one with no mind. Insides glow bright. With chains shut tight. I love that it doesn’t just tell you the lore of hollow knight like most fanmade songs do, but rather addresses the person realistically (if you could call it that lol). It questions the pale king’s actions, hinting towards what he has done. It doesn’t just go like “You created us to seal the radiance” but rather, “We lived and we died so that you could pause time” You really need to know what happened in order to understand the song, which I love. When a song is just “this character’s life story in 4 minutes” I often can’t rewatch it, or sometimes even finish the song. TL/DR: This song is great because you need to have the context already instead of have it fed to you by the song itself.

"Ashes to ashes, your dust into dust". I just saw a map that had a very similar line (ashes to ashes, dust to dust) Hollow knight map with the song curses and it seems like a coincidence

I really like this, unlike most game-based songs the lyrics aren't cringey and filled with references to the game. The song isn't based around being literally the game's whole storyline, its a song with lyrics influenced by a game.

Has it dawned on anyone else that so many of the great works of fiction made, even in this day and age, are about the futility of pursuing immortality? And yet we are all still obsessed with youth and remaining young?
