Great work. It is always amazing to go back and think he did this in Forge. That was what, 12 years ago or so? All those tools like Forge, Wavelab etc... while they must have been a nightmare to actually mix, did offered him a focus for total sample manipulation and destruction. The way vocal samples are modded, that is almost impossible to do via conventional sample editing in DAW. Actually it is, but it is hard to THINK the way he did, as he quite often did so many steps. Yes he would use pitch, stretch, resample, formant etc, which are all conventional tools in any sample editor nowdays, but the different workflow he applied (and his talent and specific vision) led to results we love.

Great stuff. Imagine Burial creating this stuff in SOUNDFORGE, which is not even a DAW, it's an audio editor, which meant he'd have to lay out the entire of one layer, then destructively render it and start adding the next layer - no going back, no tweaking the mix, no GRID even, ripping those metal gear solid gun clip samples off his PS3... just building and layering by ear. Crazy! Apparently one of his ways of judging when a track was nearly done was the audio file in soundforge would start to look like a fishbone.

Burial is the one and only who is capable of using his style. It's like in any other medium of art. Technique alone is relatably easy to copy, but the biggest part of a genius masterpiece are vision and emotions and type of sensitivity, and this is something impossible to copy to people without them. And those who have it won't go so low to make "how to" about other visioners.

Not claiming to be any kind of audio engineer, but I think the kicks need to be shortened, and the sub frequencies on them don't need to be boosted quite as much. I noticed that a lot of the kicks on Untrue feel less punchy in the low low end and that they tend to sit in a slightly higher frequency range, so that seems to be partially in the EQ and partially in the length of the actual samples. What I like about the bass in songs from Untrue (I don't tend to listen to his other stuff much, fake fan I guess) is that it really breathes in the mix and that Burial's unorthodox kicks don't cloud up the low end. From the standpoint of trying to make bangers, it's all technically awful mixing, but that really suits the lo-fi, melancholy atmosphere of Burial in my opinion. Also, none of the drums feel super saturated in any Burial songs that I can think of, and I think that that deadness and emptiness in the mix is an important piece. Listening on headphones, I feel like I could lose the drums if I'm not careful, and I like that they can melt into the textures of each song and don't really demand attention. I think in some cases, reverb that's either added to certain samples or already present in them can determine the presence of that sample, and sometimes the presence is determined by the resonance or sample length. Might also help to use a shorter reverb or just cut the reverb on a sample shorter too, but I think a bleak and relatively empty drum mix allows for the vocal samples, instrumental samples (pad synth, piano) and bass to shine in a unique way. It's definitely a challenge to figure out how to bring the Burial sound into the present, where most listeners demand a certain type of audio quality, but hopefully these observations are helpful. EDIT: There are some kicks that are a little subbier on Untrue, but most of the kick-like sounds in those grooves don't have that sub frequency at all, just the kick that hits on the first beat of the loop, or in a simple off beat 2-step pattern for example. Hope that's not too contrary to what I said above. EDIT2: Panning out beefier kick sounds and maybe messing with stereo width could also help ------------- I don't mean any of this as an insult to you, and I appreciate that you're making these videos and sharing your knowledge with other producers. I thought your Aphex video was great, and I definitely got some cool results out of Ableton after watching it.

You cannot side-chain in Soundforge so mentally B would lowpass everything necessary so the mix wont sound muddy. This guy wouldnt do that, its a major nuance BUT from a unique point of view he did mention not to "coppy" himmmmm I use that term loosely lol but I personally love this "burialesque" sub genre along with the percs!
