It's August, and the Hollyhocks in the cottage garden are coming to the end of flowering, have set seed and the first hollyhocks seed is now ripe and ready to collect for sowing or storing.
Hollyhocks are one of the most popular cottage garden flowers and have been grown for hundreds of years in English cottage gardens. @@gardenerscottageblakeney1316 Yes, very true. I love the tall summer flowers, but these are my favourite. I noticed in another video that the seed pods were scattered over gravel. Is it necessary to put them on gravel, or will it work as well if the stalks are scattered over the soil bed? Thank you.

Sashine B. Hi they will grow in soil but it needs to be well drained and ideally sunny . Also they don’t like competition from other plants when they are young as they are slow to germinate and grow but once they get going they are enormous so need space

I want Hollyhocks so badly. I’m in Texas zone 8a so I think they should be fine climate wise (with only the wind being a problem down here). I’m probably going to have to plant them from seed but it won’t be for a bit. Maybe early November is when I can try to get some. Should I go ahead and let them grow in the ground at that point? I hope it’s not too early or late for them to grow

No, I would get them sown, the seed is tough and comes up over the next 12 months when the conditions are just right. Good Luck, they are worth it.

Oh no that is a shame are you germinating them in a cold frame or greenhouse. I wonder if they are rotting off . Make sure to use a very free draining compost . We germinate ours in gravel in our garden and they germinate really well

Can I sprinkle seeds on pots and leave them outside for the winter? I'm not sure where I want to put them yet...also the seeds I have were a gift from two years ago...are they still viable?

Probably, they are tough and robust and we see them germinating for years after they have been spread.
