I wonder how long it takes Hollywood to realize they need us, not we need them? I think we went and saw one movie in a cinema in the last two years, and between me, my wife and my son, we spend more time watching youtube and foreign content, anyway. Hollywood has a long history of looking down at everything and everyone between California and NY and maybe they do need to suffer extinction and go the path of Bud Light.

Mike, thank you for doing this. As you discovered, they are striking because AI is taking their jobs. The studios want to scan background actors once, pay a few hundred dollars and then use their image for free forever. The same thing can be done with their voices. AI is going to take many jobs now done by people, and SAG-AFTRA strikers are standing up to it. It is a big story, thank you for going after it. What the actors and writers haven't realized yet is that they don't need the production studios at all anymore. You know how they are tearing down sets? It's because they don't need them anymore, they run scanned actors on scanned sets. But the studios gave up the plan too fast... the studios still need the people because the AI has to have the people to learn from. Actors, writers and directors will be able to put together their own ad-hoc teams and create productions that they fully own. The legacy distribution brands will have to cooperate, but most likely the creatives will form fresh brands that people trust. You are sort of already doing what the actors and writers will need to do, make their own productions. Even though Google takes a huge cut as a distribution company, you still own your own product and talent. But what if they said, "Mike, if you want to have your show here, you have to let us digitize your voice and image and Google owns it. And we can do anything we want with it from now on." I think you would reconsider your arrangement with them. This is happening not only with acting and writing, but with all human professions.
@karenkilroy9645
@karenkilroy9645 Жыл бұрын
@@jimgravesus Good business is if the creative groups compete with legacy entertainment brands, not just lie down. Technology companies will work with creative groups, and everything is virtualized, so the studios really have no advantage. Distribution is direct to consumer, and this model is very easy to reproduce, especially if the creative groups have direct access to the consumer behavior data.

I say let it burn. Here's how this will end: This will get settled and the studios will somehow get richer. The CEOs will still have their billionaire's retreats. The big name actors will get richer. The writers and little guys will get a few more table scraps and be happy enough about it. All while those struggling before will still be struggling, but perhaps with a few more bucks in their pockets for a happy meal on the weekends. And to top it off, we, the consumers will get stuck with the bill in the form of higher subscription fees, cable bills, and movie ticket prices and still no invitations to Jimmy Kimmel's parties. And if those on the picket line don't like their income situation, get a different job. GiV has it right: these people don't HAVE to be a Hollywood writer or actor.

I tried being a movie extra from 1989 through 1990, worked on a couple of movies including a Disney film. I got out of it, because California is a 'union state' meaning if you want to make a career out of it you half to join the union (I also got outta Kalifornia). I had the same experience working for Yellow Freight, in Adelanto, with the Teamsters. The movie/TV extra union's joining fee and the monthly dues were so high (regardless of whether you had a job or not), and this is back in the late 1980s, that there was no way I could do it. I knew a few extras that were literally homeless. One guy, who had speaking roles in a couple of Magnum P.I. episodes and a part in one of Lucy's last movies, was allowed to live in an Army National Armory, he told me his union dues were so high he couldn't pay for rent and sometimes went without food. Hardcore extras would spend all day sitting in the offices of talent agencies (the legitimate agencies) waiting for work, when a job would open up they would scramble to where ever the job was, to apply. I had a wife and three kids, no way could I do that.

My friend won a spot as an extra on this movie in the 90’s. I drove her there because her husband couldn’t make it. After I dropped her off, I ended up wandering around the set a little bit. One of the hairdressers asked if I wanted to get into the movie. I agreed, of course. Not sure how the hairdresser was able to convince the director I could get a spot, but it was fun. Only problem, they cut my scene. I still got 50 bucks and free snacks.

The reality is that regular extra work goes to those folks who "know someone with juice in the industry". When I met my wife in 1986 she was a member of Aftra and SAG, her sister-in-law had a leading role on a popular sitcom, and brother-in-law was a director...just like most industries "it's helps to know"someone". She worked on films and TV shows each and every week almost daily for every year since arriving in the USA in 1980. She quit that life and used her college degree joining my manufacturing biz a few years later. She wasn't into the lifestyle which includes for females who don't have "juice" of "putting out"!

@@Potatotenkopf that’s a very broad statement and is not an argument for broken business model. Studios aren't more transparent about their streaming services, so exactly how popular or unpopular a show/movie is or isn't, isn't really clear. Studio executives also are making way more percentage-wise than in the past. In turn, writers & celebrities need a clearer idea on exactly how popular or unpopular their work is too.

We haven't had many quality movies in the last 5 years. I hope these actors & writers stay on strike for a long long time lol.

They are striking a dying industry. First Television and now the Internet are taking away their viewers. More and more worker demands, means fewer jobs.

Great video! Also, KZbin gives you free and fun feedback with the comments, ever advancing technology and programming, the final edit*, freedom, independence, viewership. Yeah, I think there are a number of issues at play that you covered. All true with AI, imaging, etc. The big one is where these actors have been in a successful TV show that was then sold to NFLX. So, this was brought to light by the actor from The Gilmore Girls. He said his show is now streaming on NFLX and it's one of the top shows and he hardly gets anything from it. So, NFLX is saying that people are just paying a subscription and watching many different things, they're not paying to watch one particular show. So they pay big for the content and then pay a smaller residual that goes to the production company who then can share that small amount with the actor as a residual. But, that's kind of what brought the whole thing forward is that a lot of hit TV shows and films from the past 20-30 years are now streaming on NFLX and the actors aren't getting anything....compared to say when Seinfeld went into Syndication or Friends or Gilligan's island....the actors all made great money whenever it was picked up to run a second time on another network. NFLX streaming is basically the same as if your show or movie were picked up in syndication, which always meant big residuals. If TBS picked up a TV show or movie you were in 10 years ago and played it every day, you'd make great money. So yeah that's the word from the actors who have spoken about it is that they always thought that if their show ended up in syndication then they would make great money. And, now it goes to NFLX or one of the other streamers and there really isn't much of a market called "syndication" much anymore. *for the very most part.
