An important part of history. Cash made a huge contribution to 20th century popular music. Thank you.

"Gotta Travel On" seemed to be used as a closing song back then. I remember it was used to close the show in April of 1966 in Green Bay, WI, my first Cash concert.

I've always heard about this performance, how "out of it" J.R. was. It's sad, but it shaped his life and the legend that I love.

I know Johnny alway hated this recording and show, but I disagree. It’s raw and compelling and a true testament to performing something meaningful when you’re not at your best. What a giant talent.
@TheMidnightModder2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's what I love about it. Like you said, it's RAW, and because of that it's one of his greatest shows ever. You never hear music like this anymore because everything has to be so perfect... And they just don't make them like they used to. Modern society doesn't allow people like Johnny Cash to exist.

He was in a very bad condition here due to drugs and his wife sitting in the audience while him being in love with June...True piece of history this recording.

With how big Carnegie Hall was compared to this one, I'm greatly surprised and deeply saddened that there isnt any recordings of him there.

As you probably know, that Carnegie Hall show is infamous for how out of sorts Cash was. Allegedly, they were going to tape it but turned off the tapes when he showed up under the influence.

According to Johnny Cash: The Life, this show was actually considered a success as it came a few weeks after a performance at Carnegie Hall that was, by all accounts, a train wreck. Legend of John Henry's Hammer was actually brand new at the time, as Cash had only just recorded it in the studio.

Somehow Marshall Grant considered both the Carnegie Hall show and this concert to be triumphs. By Cash's own account they were both marred by his parched throat due to his amphetamine consumption. Truth is he was mortified by both performances.
