That speech from the Sweet Baby Inc. woman was eye opening. Yes she spoke for her organisation but she was expressing an ideology. She revealed that they KNOW their ideas are unprofitable and unpopular, they’re no longer arguing that they are, they’re arguing it’s a direction they HAVE to go and the industries need to change into propaganda engines to protect what they’re doing, audience and profit be damned.

That's not really true. The Roman aristocratic families (maybe rather Clans), from whom the vast majority of still preserved Roman literature corpus was written (or rather dictated) saw them as a negative, contrary to traditional virtues (vir = man), the Mos Maiorum. There was also a big part of class thinking as simple plays were popular entertainment with the plebs and it grew generally bigger with Greek influence. Greek view on actors varied extremely from polis to polis and also with time. Plays about morality were also commonly used as a kind of mass pedagogy. It also depends how you define actor and play. Since the earliest direct ancestor of the Greek script (before the BA collapse lead to the downfall of most Bronze Age civilisations, there had already been written Greek in another script but they became illiterate for some generations after the collapse), we have epics like those most famous of Homer, who finally wrote his epics down as a help for others to learn it. They were not read but passionately told by those poets, who had to know them by heart but also had to ad-hoc tell epic prose about every topic the patron and his guests desired. For that they learned various kinds of rhetoric building blocks creating tension, awe and whatever else was desired. If you ever read his two big epics, you will still find many such building blocks getting repeated, sometimes word for word. However, they were obviously not performed on a single day and masters in the profession like Homer knew the right balance and all the rhetoric tricks. I could go further into the Middle Ages and Renaissance but I still need to do chores.

I am happy to get the honest reviews because with the cost of taking my family to a movie, it helps make a better decision to spend our money. A night at the movies at these newer theaters can cost a couple hundred dollars for a family of four. In the 90’s we just waited for bad movies to hit the video store shelves and you could rent it for cheap.

We have a whole new generation of celebrities that grew up believing they were special. Everyone told them how great they were and how they could do anything. What was forgotten is to make yourself special. To be special, you have to be exceptional. What stands out in an exceptional way. Not your incredulous attitude, not your overbearing personality, the pretend social warrior shit. You have to be better and stand out based on what you can do that others can't. Just because you think you deserve it doesn't mean you do. Just because the people around you love you doesn't mean others will.

When you look at an IP as only a built in audience # and feel entitled to gut and replace everything about the IP to push your message you will get backlash. When you lean into tropes the audience is tired of you will get backlash. These are known quantities that any competent executive should anticipate and presumably avoid or at least be judicious about but instead it is the fans that are toxic for pointing out they've done the things the audience hates.

In theory the concept is a good one to teach actors. They have coaches for interviews and media appearances. Disney even encourages the young actors to date amoung fellow Disney actors to make sure the partner doesnt start leaking stuff. So studios should be helping actors with social media. They would be stupid not to. But yeah, Hollywood is a wasteland that refuses to see that its dead.

Personally, if I ran a studio it would be in the my contacts that if you are in one of my moves. You don't use social media at all. Not until like a week after the movie comes out. People don't worship celebrities like they once did. Or perhaps they do, just not the "mainstream". And because people don't just worship Hollywood celebs like they once did your mouth can't do anything but hurt us. It can leave is at net neutral at the very best. So, yeah, mouth shut outside of official promos

The one I got a kick out of was Niel Druckmann convincing HBO to give Kaitlyn Dever more security for The Last Of Us Season 2. Just in case of the "toxicity surrounding the character." Literally no one has said or done anything to her, (or would have) but by preemptively setting up that narrative in people's minds, they are acting in bad faith way more than the fans they are villainizing.

The best part is that they paid billions of dollars to buy the IP because of the fandoms attached to them. Then they decide that the fandoms that they just bought aren't the target audience. Then they call them toxic. It's like a man complaining that his used F-40 ferrari doesn't blew up because apparently you can't run it on rubbing alcohol.

Toxic Fans = Fans that are passionate about something who won't mindlessly consume the slop that is fed to them and will call you out on your shit content. 8:12 The Hobbit movies weren't great but Peter Jackson didn't make those movies to push an agenda, disrespect the source material or to deliberately antagonize the audience. He made those movies out of love for the source of material even if the execution wasn't great.
