Jackie wrote in his book("I am Jackie Chan" 1998) that when filming The Drunken Master, in order to achieve the effect of such a red face, he had to hang upside down so that the blood rushes to his face.

The bit where he's drinking while laying down. That's all him. Jackie doesn't use wires in movies he's directing. Just has really good core strength, flexibility and balance. Drunken Master 2 used no wires too.

Fun Fact: In the original cantonese audio for Drunken Master 2, Jackie Chan actually mentions all of the 8 drunken gods in the fight with the gangsters; a little call back to the original 1978 movie.

His son, Yuen Woo-ping, is even better known as action director with an impressive resume, including the epoch-making "The Matrix".

It makes perfect sense when U look into his background & realize that Jackie Chan got his start as a child performer in Chinese Opera.... Back then, the training techniques for young Chinese opera students were so grueling that they would B automatically condemned as child abuse today! Chan himself admits (in his autobiography "Jackie Chan: My Life In Action") that he grew up hating & fearing his instructor due to the sheer pain & exhaustion of his physical regimen, yet in the end he credits that unyielding, rigorous discipline @ the ability to consider & accept both pain & risk when approaching his work. When the decline of Chinese opera's popularity in Hong Kong led to shortfalls in audiences & revenues, Chan realized he had to seek his fortunes elsewhere. At 1st, life as a Hong Kong movie stuntman was a struggle, as Chan's previous fame as a child performer in Chinese opera did little to distinguish himself from all the competitors eager to make a living & build a reputation in the movie industry. Furthermore, Chan was *not* among the top physical performers @ his opera academy; rather, he was known best as a decent "all-rounder" (acrobatics, martial arts forms, singing & dancing). Since skill alone wasn't enuff to make him stand out from the crowd, Chan knew he needed something more to give him an edge. He finally found that extra something when, while on set, the movie stunt coordinator angrily refused to go along w/ the director's wishes on the grounds that the desired stunt (a power kick knocking a stunt double backwards into a tumbling long fall) was so dangerous that it was impossible to perform w/o extensive safety measures. The director insisted that the stunt be done w/o ANY such safety devices in place to make the scene work. That's when Chan, knowing full well why the stunt coordinator was so upset, stepped forward & volunteered to do the stunt anyway. Shocked & horrified, the coordinator eventually relented, cautioning Chan that he'd have to get his body roll & timing *perfect* to avoid landing himself in the hospital ... or worse. As U can guess, Chan proved his opera training had instilled a solid grasp of body mechanics & 3-dimension spatial reasoning into him on a near-instinctive level: Chan not only survived the fall intact, he very nearly performed the stunt flawlessly. After that astonishing feat, the coordinator was incredulous when the young Chan informed everyone that he wanted to try the stunt AGAIN! His reasoning apparently was that he'd just proven the stunt could B done safely w/o safety equipment, so he may as well retry the stunt to get it *just right*!! After that, Chan became known by his fellow stunt performers as being incredibly brave, exemplifying the do-or-die attitude that they upheld as being paramount in their line of work (codified in a Chinese catchphrase which more or less translates to "tiger courage" or "fearless like tiger"). Chan took that sentiment & literally put himself on the line for it ...& the multiple times he nearly crippled &/or killed himself for the sake of making amazing movies & unbelievable action scenes proves that it wasn't just a one-off thing: Chan is who & what he is because he took risks that no one else could or would dare to consider.

Jackie's a huge fan of Buster Keaton and always mentions the physical comedy in his films. He's also a realist in the way of making his characters vulnerable and not being immune to getting hurt like you see in a lot of action films. First time I saw Drunken Master over 30 years ago I was in awe of what Jackie does. His Hollywood stunts were watered down and so it's always good to go back to his earlier films :)

Jackie's moves in the drunken master movies are supposed to relate to a number of drunken gods or masters, and you can actually see him switching between their styles! He truly is the best action star who ever lived.

In that market fight, you'll hear Jackie saying phrases like "monkey drinks master's wine", "eagle carries wine bottle", "uncle stirs the barrel", etc... But the Chinese dialogue is actually naming the following from the original Drunken Master: Lu Dongbin - the drunkard w/ inner strength Zhang (Chan) Gualao - the drunkard w/ the swift double-kicks Lan Caihe - the drunkard w/ the sudden deadly waist attack He (Ho) Xiangu - the drunken woman flaunting her body Li Tieguai - the drunken cripple w/ the powerful right leg Han Xiangzi - the drunken flute player w/ the powerful wrists Cao (Tso) Guojiu - the drunkard w/ the powerful throat lock Zhongli (Jun) Quan - the drunkard holding a pot in his arms Hence, part of the fun is watching Jackie interpret each mythological character through movements. By the time that we get to the final fight, he doesn't even name them anymore and lets the audience recognize each one as they come up. Making the fight more than just the story of two rivals in an intense struggle, and entertains the viewer on multiple levels. He also plays Lu in The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) under the character's birth name. BTW, you guys should also do some reactions to JC's classmates Sammo Hung & Yuen Biao. My favorite is the finale of Knockabout (1979) in which they use monkey kung fu. Maybe you guys could shoot some videos pitting different martial arts styles against each other. Perhaps based on fighting games.

I'm not sure if you guys have done anything like it yet, but it would be awesome if you could react to some of the outtakes that Jackie typically shows during the end credits of his movies. I know for some people seeing the successful stunts may be more impressive, but for me seeing him actually trying just made him even more badass even if he fails. Plus sometimes seeing the aftermath on some of these just shows how much risk he put himself in, and also just how much pain he brought upon himself which just made me respect him and stuntmen even more. Also if I could recommend a specific stunt from one of his older movies, it would be the bicycle chase from Project A. It's the typical Jackie Chan stunt too, combining comedy and impressive stunt work and for me it's just awesome.

Read a lot of books on him years ago. One thing that stuck out was once he got in a fight with several people and got beat up. He learned from that experience no matter how good you are you always get hit. That's why even though he's the hero in all the movies he never walks away from a fight unscathed.

It was before he went to the opera school. He was barely 6 years old. Older kids were picking on his little French "girlfriend" and he attempted to defend her honor. In the scuffle, he got smacked in the head ( a harbinger of future head banging?) by a foreign embassador's son which left him semi-conscious and dizzy. Fearing repercusions and an international incident, his father added insult to injury by offering to give him a sound beating for fighting and making him apologize to the boys who were teasing his "friend". ... The other fight occured at the school when he got in a fight with a big brother (which was forbidden). Master Yuen caught them & made them hit each other until they were bloody, black and blue and could no longer move.

Thing is, I don't even consider that Legend of the Drunken Master fight to be even in the top 2 fights in the movie. Y'all should check out the Axe gang fight and the final fight vs. Ken Lo! (the final fight is probably my favorite fight scene ever. period.)

Alright you guys should to check out some of the scenes from Project A from 1983. It's a classic of his that doesn't get enough love in my opinion, but it also has some fun fight scenes. Bicycles, rolling logs, pirates and more. Not forgetting one of his most life threatening stuns.

What I absolutely love about Jackie Chan's movies is that each major sequence has dozens, if not hundreds, of little moments where Jackie could've made things easier for himself (and possibly those around him), but he opted to take the more difficult route over and over again, just because it would result in something unique. Hope to see more of these! With that, maybe hope to see things like Yuen Biao reactions! He's a massively underappreciated talent!

I always loved watching Jackie Chan movies growing up, because he made fights entertaining to watch for the moves rather than having their significance be dictated by the outcome. As a kid, i obviously could not tell the difference between when wires were used and when they weren't, because to me, everything Jackie did seem like something he could actually do.

Fun Fact on the drunken Master 2: Did you know the original Liu Kang from both Mortal Kombat games took part as one the main gang members as Henry. Ho Sung Pak who played both Liu Kang in MK1 & 2 & Shang Tsung in MK1 was asked to be part and he said yes to it

I do love this movie and a huge fan of jackie chan, but i'm sorry to say that the movie doesn't do justice to the comic book character but not to blame jackie. it's because the comics are really hilarious but mostly with adult content. even the animated series can't really capture the whole nuance of City Hunter because they have to tone down the adult jokes for children's or ratings.

12:35 I just remembered, how a magician works the audience, so they are paying attention away from the trick. That fight is so over the top and all over the place, that even if he is in a very unnatural position, you can't tell he's in a wire because your mind is focused in the insanity of that fight. I never realized that one, until watching this video. I will definitely pay attention now, for those subtle tricks.

when jackie hit by a chair in the last clip, that move isn't flexing.. that's how usually chinese kung fu movie depiction on "iron body".. You make hard the muscle part of your body that being hit .. Just like when we see in Shaolin monks perform their kungfu when their bodies against stones, spears, etc..

In almost all old kung fu films, two fighting styles are always presented. In "Drunken Master", Jackie showed the fighting style "Drunken Man", although in the second part he also included elements of the monkey style. He is a master of his craft with incredible body control. He once demonstrated this on the show "Wetten Das". A candidate bet that she could break through several boards with a raw egg in her fist without the egg breaking. She was probably nervous and didn't manage it. Jackie was on the show as a guest and was challenged by the presenter. Jackie took the egg in his fist and broke five boards one after the other without breaking the egg. Then he showed the egg and threw it on the floor, where it broke. His films are very nice to watch because of his martial arts, but also because of the humor. (Google translate) Correction... your analyzing was amazing , you cover it from technical side and the subjective point of view on how viewers would see it , i was watching jackie chan since i was child and i was even trying to imitate him with my brothers and my neighbors he was a legend to us even that we were living in north Africa some people thought that such movies may never reach us but in fact many cultures reach us very well , we've seen Asian cinema such as Bruce lee movies , Tony Jaa, jet Li , Donnie Yen, Wu Jing, some Hollywood martial artists like Jean-Claude Van Damme, some Bollywood movies , even Mexican tv shows probably the amount of movies i seen in my childhood only pass what some adults ever seen so far 😁 thank you omar for bringing this memory to me again i would loove to see this type of react videos again, lets bring Bruce lee next maybe or Donnie Yen or Tony Jaa

I love Drunken Master in my eyes it is Jackie's Magnum Opus, it's just so wonderfully done the fighting, the story, the progression of events. All of it is top tier, it also introduced me to Drunken Boxing, a martial art that is more of a gimmick than an actual combative technique. However there are several games that use it, most prominently being Tekken with Lei Wulong who is essentially Jackie Chan in a video game. I'd recommend watching 'Jackie Chan's influence on Lei Wulong' and you'll see how much they put into the character.

Also it is easier to follow the scenes in Jackies movies because in todays action scenes you have like 50 cuts, every 1-2 seconds...combined with dark environment you often don't even know what you have seen. Miss the risk to produce these shots because...time is money
