Lived in L.A. for 2 years, my favorite day trip was Hollywood. At least once a week. And I'll be damned if there wasn't a crazy sale (everything in this store is usually $10, but for the next hour it's $5) every. Single. Time.

Also, DON’T get a hotel in Hollywood. We made that mistake when we went (had never been to LA before. This was years ago, pre-KZbin). The front desk clerk literally told us when we checked in that we should make it a point to be in our room with the door locked by 9:00 each night. 😳 Yes, to it not being a very nice area. They do keep it fairly clean and “nice looking” right by Grauman’s and the Kodiak (for the tourists), but if you stray too far from there. Yuck!

I agree. Don’t drive up into the estates, but park on Canyon Drive and be prepared for a long walk and amazing views across LA and the Valley when you’re on Mt Lee Drive. It takes you right above the sign. You can also get to Griffith Park Observatory from that trail. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water. If possible, go midweek rather than on the weekend because it can get busy.

The stars on the sidewalk cover many area of entertainment, radio, music, tv, movies, etc. The icon in the middle of it tell you what category it is. Microphone, record, tv set, etc. The stars also extend down Vine St. They do move them around when the performer becomes less well known.

I've seen a few movie stars just walking down the street in Hollywood and it's amazing that most of the tourists are literally so oblivious that they don't even notice them because they're too busy trying to take pictures of the sidewalk. I don't usually bother them when I see them or draw attention to them, a friendly nod and a smile at the most then I keep walking. I once saw Edward Norton apparently on his way to an audition (sides in his hand) and I was surprised that he was even auditioning because most people at his level don't even need to audition anymore. I had just LEFT an audition when I saw him on his way too an audition - and I only know he was on his way TO an audition because usually I just fold up my sides and tuck it into my back pocket after the audition. Another time I saw Billy Connolly just walking casually down the street, I smiled and nodded, he smiled and nodded back; we both kept walking. It was a good day for me & I was in a pretty good mood because any time I get the opportunity to audition it's a good day, seemed like he was in a good mood too but I think he was there to be a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live (he was in front of the old Masonic lodge which is now Jimmy Kimmel Live). I've also seen a few celebs in the audience at the theater where I used to perform - they get in for free, usually showing up late and hide in the back where nobody can see them but it's hard to tell with all of the impersonators in the area plus it's dark after the stage lights go up; house lights go down. One time an actor in the show was peeking through the curtain before the show just to see how many audience members were there and saw someone who looked a lot like Johnny Depp. He says to another actor "hey I think Johnny Depp is here", she looks through the curtains and said "No.... that guys too fat to be Johnny Depp". Johnny Depp HEARD them! Lol (he just laughed, he thought it was funny). They almost didn't let him in for free because the guy at the ticket booth didn't believe he was Johnny Depp either until he pulled out his ID. Another time I was on stage and saw Michael Jackson in the audience - it took me about five seconds to remember "oh wait... he died a few years ago". I was trying to stay focused and IN the scene, that was a little bit of a distraction. He was sitting right in the front row but when I'm on stage I'm usually so focused on what I'm doing that I don't even notice the audience. So many funny stories from that time period, like the time I found a used condom backstage, the time I almost fell asleep UNDER the stage because I hadn't slept for about 48 hours (was working on a movie same week the play was going), the time an actor fell off the stage - and that was the ONLY TIME in all of those months of performing that I heard someone pronounce the name of the Scottish Play right before the show. I'm not superstitious but that was a little freaky.

My wife and I and her niece and husband drove from Vegas to LA one year. We left around 4am in the morning and got there around 8 or 9am. It was a long drive. I was disappointed in both LA and Hollywood. The walk of Fame turned up to be rather boring. And many of the areas on the WOF, the plaques were damaged or littered with graffitti. As for the Holloywood sign. You are right the sign basically in accessible by car though there is a look out or observation area that overlooks the valley Thankfully it was a clear day and the view was breath taking). But the downside of it is that the road to get there is narrow and full of traffic. We were able to get pretty close because we had a handicap placard. If it was for that, we would be walking. I also though LA and Hollywood were a bit on the dirty side.

The most stars I ever saw in Hollywood other than an event one expects them at was when I had a job overlooking a gas station in West Hollywood. Saw various stars there getting fuel, including Patrick Stewart and John Rhys-Davies - there were others that meant more to my co-workers, but those stuck in my mind. But of course - that's a relative handful of incidents over years of working there, so it happens but it's just not commonplace.

I've been to LA twice! I love it there and I really would like to move there. The mountain views are just breathtaking and so serene for me! We don't get that kind of nature view in NYC. I bought an Oscar, I won Best Mom lmao. My own Don't: don't ever go to LA without a jacket or long pants, it can get really chill at night. I made that mistake both times I visited. LA is a dry climate so it never really gets humid. It's warm in the sun but windy in the shade, prob cuz of the mountains and the ocean. Don't visit Skid Row! Don't stay in LA without renting a car if u plan on visiting alot of places. LA is huuuge with alot to see. Uber/Lyft rides can get really pricey, especially since the distance is so great. It can be $40-60 just to get from Downtown LA to Santa Monica or Venice Beach! Plus the subway trains are really dirty and disgusting, they don't even take you to all parts of the city. And you don't wanna ride a bus in a city that's notorious for traffic. This one is not necessarily a don't but *try not* to visit Hollywood Blvd at night, when the sun goes down it can get a little sketchy. Just like Times Sq in NYC. And finally don't leave for the airport from your hotel or air bnb an hour before your flight departure, you'll never make it! You know about the traffic by now, but also LAX airport isn't the best, it's always horribly slow and overcrowded. There's always a long line whenever we're headed home. We missed our flight the first time ugh had to wait on standby! Give yourself at least 2.5 hours ahead of time for travel and check in, plus time to grab food. Oh yeah and don't think you can walk from Venice Beach to Santa Monica and vice versa, it looks close on the map but the walk is very very long. You'll tire your feet out before you decide to call for an Uber lol Oh yes, and don't try to buy "bud" 😏 or CBD products from a regular mini mart or these smoke shops on the Venice boardwalk, their stuff is either not real or really cheap. It's better to go to an actual dispensary. They have a bunch close to Venice, but I don't think any on the beach. Hope y'all enjoy your trip!

As much as I love movies, I don't like watching them being filmed. I've been on the sets of many movies, TV sitcoms, talk shows and even music videos in the early days of MTV. Man, it is a BORE! I'll stick to writing and stay way behind the scenes. A movie set is like a construction site, but a lot more uptight, and everyone and everything has to be dead silent while the cameras roll. But if you have an interest in production you should be exposed to the set environment. A friend of mine worked on Batman Forever. He said it was absolutely tedious to film one particular scene, just because they couldn't get the lighting right. This was in a closed studio, and Schumacher's cinematographer was trying to get a particular shade of fuchsia, but they had a bad batch of bulbs and couldn't fake it with lighting gels. Keep in mind, this was Joel Schumacher, not Stanley Kubrick, so he was one of the easier directors to work with and wasn't going for perfection. I can only imagine what it would have been like if Kubrick was directing. I'm glad I missed this one.

It's kind of like the Castro District in San Francisco but in Los Angeles. But if that's not your crowd don't be surprised if you see a dude wearing a dress or getting arrested with no clothes on at all. I'm not criticizing I'm just telling you what I've seen with my own eyes. I've actually got three friends that are male strippers at some of those clubs; one of them isn't even gay.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I know the area, and I’m an old-time movie buff. Anyhow, about two weeks back (from the time of my post) I was on Hollywood Blvd and a little girl about eight years old pointed to one of the sidewalk stars and asked her father if that was a movie star. The father said he didn’t know, and looked at his phone and then said “Yes, she was” then looked away from his phone. So neither one of them knew who she was. The sidewalk star they were looking at was Greta Garbo who was one of the most popular film stars of the 1930's. The cement prints will also have a lot of celebrities many don’t know about that date back to the 1930s/40s like Myrna Loy, William Powell, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford. So some of the younger people in their teens or 20’s will look at those and have no clue who these people were unless you are into old films, and all these people were major stars of their time.
