Dale looks phenomenal, like a vacation destination. Also I'm glad more of the bitternes of dwarven history and their recent diaspora appears to come to the fore than did in the book, where it is mostly a treasure hunt. This does make it more layered and interesting from a sociological perspective.

Some excel in bringing life into books and creating amazing worlds, others excel at bringing those to life in the cinema in the best possible way. Keeping true to the book alone would not have sufficed. So as far as book to film goes he envisioned that extra step that ties things in so well. Did he do more than Tolkein? Of course not, NONE of this would exist without Tolkiens life works and entire years he put in. But he did do Tolkien justice and edited the story in a better way for the cinema.

I didn't have a fave race. I do have fave characters though. Funny that my list would have dwarfs/elves/hobbits and humans in them. I guess character and personality is what draws me in the end not the race. I do admit I find the Elves a joy to watch though. I always feel so serene. The dwarfs give more of a rough fun feeling. Hobbits make me smile. All in all it's all of them together that makes each of them shine in their own light. and I agree LOVE THIS MOVIE!

Remember Peter Bradshaw's reviews in The Guardian for Lord of the Rings? He hated them - and it has to be noted that High Fantasy does tend to rub some critics up entirely the wrong way. I haven't seen The Hobbit yet, but I'm not going to be influenced by any reviews - face it, if you love Middle Earth, you are probably going to love The Hobbit.

um... Frodo was not alive during the Hobbit... he was born about 30 years after Bilbo's return from Erebor. We see him in The Hobbit, briefly at the beginning as a sort of 'flash forward' to when Bilbo was writing the story and 'telling' Frodo 'the whole story'.

What the Tolkien Estate doesn't appreciate, I think, is the fact that a film can never be a slavish page-by-page adaptation. As far as I can tell, Peter Jackson has in no way violated the spirit of the books. His additions (such as Tauriel) are not found in the books, but they aren't categorically excluded either. If he was given the chance to film the Silmarillion, hundreds of people who have never heard of it would become Tolkien fans. Which can't be a bad thing, surely?

yes but i think pj has the last word. Now that i look back i think that actually the music from lotr actually made me fall in love with the story. Hobbit music just doesn't speak to me ... I can think of like 10 great songs from each of the lotr parts but i can only think of 1 song from hobbit. And when i heard the Nazgul song in the Thorin charge at the end i just started laughing...
