Being on the poor side of the Hobby, my best setup so far (for Trailing/Medium Crawling) has been the Hobbywing WL10BL120 ESC with TenShock 1900kv, 6 Pole Sensorless... On 3S Power. I would LOVE to someday try your HH Revolver with this ESC, which is showing NO sign of quitting in my 11 Pound Wraith with 43/13 Diff Gears, front and rear. This is my ONLY Brushless Rig (again, money).... My other two are Brushed. A SCX10 II with your BR-XL (LOVE IT!!), and your 30 Turn Handwound, which I wouldn't trade for ANYTHING as far as Brushed Motors go!! My other is a SCX10 One, with SSD Axles and 43/13 Diff Gears front and rear, with the Axial AE-5 (does the job), and another HH 30 Turn Handwound Crawlmaster. John, THANK YOU for outstanding Brushed Products!! 👍👍 (Do you STILL even make those?) They are both on 2S. I have yet to try either on 3S, as I only have one 3S Battery..... I know, TMI!! 😱 I just wanted to give you a snapshot of how someone who can't afford to go Sensorless uses these Products. 😉 SENSORED HAS LIMITATIONS! As you well know. But it is doable!! Um....... If you ever need a Beta Tester who can run Rocks in the HOT Arizona Summer............. 😊😎 Carmine 💥 ⛽

Ha, I do need a haircut! Revolver is a practically universal crawler motor, I always have them installed into at least a few rigs. Pretty much all my motors are universal in crawlers. Choose a price point and work from there.

Since march of last year ive been building a Yeti for rock racing/trail running, whenever I had time that is. I currently went with a side winder3 motor and esc because that what i had in my box O rc stuff haha. Im going sensored soon. What would be a good KV rating for my rig weighing roughly 8lbs with battery? Thanks for the video man, very useful

Mamba X and Puller Pro 3500, hands down favorite. That's what my yetis all have now. There is also the Puller XL, but it doesn't start smooth, and if you want to take it on the trail you want smooth starts.

@@HolmesHobbies Awesome man thank you very much! I always love going out with friends and family to do some trail running and definitely want the smooth start up. Question: I have brushless escs and motors from my 1/10 racing buggies. Can I use it for a crawler? Please explain. thx.
@HolmesHobbies4 жыл бұрын
typically, the motors and ESCs don't have good low end control because it isn't needed in racing. Will they work? yes. Just not the best control for crawling.

Soon I will build my 1st trx4 Sport kit, just for trailing and bashing, some climbing/crawling, and I am trying to decide if I should just pair your Trailmaster 21t with a HW1080 and save loads of dough, or if I should go for the bucks and maybe try a sensored brushless system. I'd like to go fast(ish), but I think trouble-free durability and less maintenance time are the key factors for me. Thanks for any thoughts, HH.
@oneeyemonster32625 жыл бұрын
Trouble free and you want what??? a Traxxass??? There;s too many variable...unfortunately you cant do test stand...Power/amperage draw , heat...ect on R/C cars... On an airplane ..you sort of can..i suggest to watch some test stand test video of motor.prop combo....it's sort of the samething as match pinon the motor's KV and size/wieght of the truck.....The Amperage draw are going to be all over the place...using the SAME MOTOR and KV..using different props.. The same will happen when you change Pinon or spur on a truck.. Why is that important??? if you only have 100 A esc....everything runs fine. for some reason you decide to swap the pinon...smaller or larger The Amperage might spike up to 110A or 120A... Then of course...there's also FOOLs complaining why their esc fried.... This are that brand is a pos....blah..blah..blah. ESC on R/C trucks arnt exactly cheap..Surely you dont want to fried them....the same will happen to BATTERIES....if your system runs fine on 4s....Your motor and esc is happy...but you figure...hey , I'll just use 3s...it'll just go slow..nothing will go wrong ....Yes , but it might also fry the 3s ...becuase the Motor is going to draw power or suck the life out of that battery super fast...( generate heat)....Trust me..I ve fried 3s batteries....when the 4s where charging...and I counld wait to play :-P .. Rule of thumb...Get the highest Amperage your budget will allow... Read the motor's spec CAREFULLY...It dosnt matter what brand You can have the SAME CASING SIZE motor...such as a 4076... the Power rating will be slightly different ...depending on the KV example...my 4076 2250 KV is only a 4s motor....the 4076 1600KV can use 6s The 4076 Fried my 3s battery.. The samething can happen...in aircraft model...Over proping AND Underproping

Hey thanks for the information. I've added it to my mental toolbox haha. I'm really struggling to choose a brushless motor/ESC combo for my 1:18 scale Losi Mini Rock crawler. So far I've gathered that it needs to be a 380 sized sensored motor (4.5T or higher) and the ESC needs to be 1.7"x1"x.6" (LxWxH) or smaller. Biggest issue is that it has to have good thermal properties as well because my stock motor/esc overheated all the time, even on the stock NIMH battery. I just don't know where to start as far as where to shop and compare. Any help would be appreciated!

There's not anything out there right now. I'm actually working on some motors right now, if they test well we should have stock in about two months.

I just got my first real rc rig this Xmas 2020 and my gf and her brother threw in and got me the Axial RR10 Bomber 2.0. I’ve been experimenting with different sized motors and I wound up burning up the ESC with an Axial 20T and a 15tooth pinion. Made me very sad. I don’t want it to go too fast but I don’t want it to be slow as dirt either. Looking for a motor or new ESC combo that will have good low end torque and also have some decent top speed at the same time. I don’t have a million dollars either and will prolly keep it as a brushed motor. I was kinda happy with the 27T with the same 15T pinion. What spur gear would be good with that set up? I’m such a novice I’m so confused on what to get without spending an arm and a leg. Please give me some advice. What’s a good motor ESC combo for the RR10 bomber? I love trail driving and rock bouncing and some crawling!! Mostly moderate speed crawling nothing too difficult or technical.

First thing I would try is a 21t 550. Something like the Trailmaster sport 21t 550 will be a low cost motor to see if it stays happy with that gearing. If it is still unhappy, you will have to gear down or else go brushless to retain wheelspeed and torque.

im looking into my options for motor and ESC for a comp crawler (not super serious comps, but definatly dedicated). g-speed chassis, and trying to keep weight low (COG and total weight). wanting to run 3S, and like to have wheel speed there when required as here in New Zealand we dont get to massive rock formations all that often. many people (in the US etc) with the Gspeed seem to be going to the yellow jacket or the revolver, and i love the idea of them for weight etc, but im a little cautious as i have read they dont like dirt etc? i was leaning towards a 2000kv yellow jacket with mamba micro or a revolver snub with mamba micro, but after watching a bunch of your vids over the last day im reconsidering with all the talk of puller pros etc. whats your thoughts? cheers.

I'm basically a toy RC hobbyist. I raced Losi years ago, but now just run around the yard, or go to an informal race on a weekend. I buy the low priced stuff, and modify it first for endurance, and then for a little more performance. My question may be easy, or unanswerable. Can you have too much ESC? Weight and size being equal or close to equal, I've seen some very wide differences in amp, and voltage rating. I also see motor and ESC combos that don't sound quite like a match. example: (35amp ESC for a 4500kv ) You mentioned punch/holeshot being a factor if ESC isn't big enough. Anyway: My question is this - - Is there any disadvantage to using an ESC that far exceeds the demands of your setup? Weight is not a real concern. Size might be, but if I can fit a high power ESC in whatever I'm building is there any disadvantage to doing so?

Excellent video John, thanks. I’ve asked this before, could you also touch upon the cost factor? What makes quality ESCs expensive? Maybe a noob question, but really curious. Get well soon!
@HolmesHobbies6 жыл бұрын
Lots of factors involved. The base cost is the PCB and how thick the copper is, plus hardware. Good FETs and drivers aren't cheap. Cheap ones might be OK, but have widely varying quality and reliability. More expensive means more power and cooler running, and typically better running. The SW4 and Mamba X controllers are incredible for the price. The BLE controller is also a great controller, but has fallen behind the times and is at the end of life.
