Rosie Heilbrun was always told her red hair was a curse, but she never believed it. She often dreamed what it would look like under a white veil with the man of her dreams by her side. However, her life takes a harrowing turn in 1944 when she is forced out of her home and sent to the most gruesome of places: Auschwitz.
Upon arrival, Rosie’s head is shaved and along with the loss of her beautiful hair, she loses the life she once cherished. Among the chaos and surrounded by hopelessness, Rosie realizes the only thing the Nazis cannot take away from her is the fierce redhead resilience in her spirit. When all of her friends conclude they are going to heaven from Auschwitz, she remains determined to get home. She summons all of her courage, through death camps and death marches to do just that.
Her granddaughter, Nechama Birnbaum knew the world needed to know her grandmother's story. Her book "The Redhead of Auschwitz" is about the intricacies of Jewish culture that still exist today and the tender experiences that are universal to all humanity: family, coming of age, and first love. It is a story that celebrates believing in yourself no matter the odds. This is a story about the little redheaded girl who thought she could, and so she did.
Unfortunately, shortly after this interview, Rosie passed away. It is with great sadness but also honor, that we have the opportunity to release an interview with her to help perpetuate her legacy.

Nishmasa b'Eden. My father's mother's family was in Aushwitz and his father's family was in other camps. These stories must be told and treasured. Especially now when it is indeed happening again, and being denied again. Bobby's message is essential and eternal, may her soul continuously ascend in Eden. And the living will take it to heart, and live in this path, to choose true life, Torah life, life of faith, life of kindness, unconditional love, life of strength and Truth.

I am amassed by this lady, Bobi, such an unique person! As an Ortodox Christian, I've never been that much interested in other religions. I am regularly listening Living Lchaim now and I've downloaded many audio books written by Jewish people and it's like finding a totally new world. . I am telling different stories to my kids about Jewish people, the holocaust and the fact that Jewish people are te most united nation in the world. Wisdom and will power are the best words that describe the holocaust survivors!

It makes me cry hearing her speak about her experiences. Its heartbreaking to hear how she was still suffering from the trauma of what happened to her until the end of her life. Her courage and effort to improve our world is inspiring. I think of her everyday and try to remember not to take life for granted. I’m really thankful for her teaching but I wish she didn’t have to suffer the way that she did. She is a hero.

I also must comment on how great she looks, not a day over 75! And she has great taste, the dress, the scarf and jewelry all elegant and tastefully done. Also the wig, beautiful style.

What an extraordinary woman! May Hashem give her a huge aliyat neshama! This was the lesson of Rabbi Akiva, who lost 24,000 students except for the 5 which included Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai . and yet he started all over again. Maybe this is why his Torah survived over the Torah of Rabbi Yishmael, because his Torah was the Torah that would make it to the end of times, i.e. the times of Moshiach. and her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren will be there to greet her when she rises up. May her memory be a blessing for us alll!!

These stories need to be told daily In fact I thought I’ve heard every indignity against the Jews but there is always a new story that arises. It’s mind boggling what humans are capable of.

World would be a better place if the Jews would recognize G-d and His Torah and do teshuva! Even the gentiles have the 7 mitvos, it all depends on us, the more we observe the laws of G-d, the better the world would be, its important to educate people of the holocaust, but I think it's more important to wake up the Jews to do teshuva, that's the key to the final redemption. She's really a remarkable woman, may her neshama have an aliya! And may we be zoche to greet Moshiach tzedkainu in our days!

Here’s why I find the holocaust so incredibly sickening In the Imperial German Army 100,000 Jews served in WW1 12,000 died in action 18,000 were awarded the iron cross for bravery And they were still murdered even after fighting as hard as they did

I listen daily to these accounts of courage, compassion, love, humility, and the hand of Hashem saving some of his people. With this in mind, the younger generation of those in Israel need these same aforementioned qualities in dealing with Beta Israel and the African refugees in Israel. They need to be taught that their ancestors were degraded to the highest degree by the demonic Hitler's henchmen, and those who went knocking on ports such as Cuba and the US were unwelcomed, and were forced to return to Europe thus ending up through the chimneys. Beta Israel and African refugees are treated horribly by Israelis making some believe Israel is the most racist nation on earth. I am wondering what my favorite and honored holocaust survivor Rabbi Israel Meir Lau has to say about this disgraceful behavior by these racist youngsters who would not have been here if some goys did not risk their lives to save them.

My own mother survived, but I never heard the word "Holocaust" until I was in 6th grade (I went to Jewish day school) my public school friend told me about it and I said I never heard of it so she gave me secular books to read and I didn't even know my own mother went through it because she never talked about it. In later years when we asked her why she didn't talk about it, she said that she told someone what happened when she arrived at Kamentz-Podolsk, and they said she should be ashamed of herself for making up such horrific lies. So not only did she have to live with the trauma all by herself, she had to now feel too ashamed to tell anyone what happened to her. She was on the run for her life from the age of 8: ALONE. Until she got caught.
