The Ukrainian people have faced many trials. However, one of the most terrible crimes against Ukrainians was the famine, artificially created on Ukrainian lands by the Soviet government.
World directors assure that until the moment they started making films about the Holodomor, they had no idea what a painful topic it was for Ukraine. The film "Holod-33", revealing the crimes of the Stalin-Bolshevik regime against the people of Ukraine, was directed by Oles Yanchuk. The basis for the film was the story “The Yellow Prince” by Vasily Barka. This is the first full-length film by the cinema master, very brave at that time, because the director filmed it no matter what, without fear of sanctions from the authorities.
This film is a look at the man-made famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine through the eyes of one family. The famine, which killed millions of people, was the result of Soviet policy aimed at punishing the Ukrainian peasantry for resisting the total collectivization of their farms.
“Holod-33” is a historical drama, a black and white tragedy through the eyes of a small hungry child, whose family are ordinary peasants who also suffer losses due to the Soviet artificial famine.

However, this did not happen - on the last day of filming, Kaganovich died.
