My Lord I'm so glad that I found you. I've been an amateur cabinet builder, but never a restorer. I'm 80yrs old but I'm thinking getting back into the hobby. I haven't built anything in about 25 yrs, but because of you, I'm thinking of getting back into the game. The only problem is I've gotten rid of all my tools and machines, but hey I can always buy some new or used, and I'm old, what do I have to lose. You are incredibly talented. So wish me luck.

Beautiful, perfect work ! You are a very talented young woman . We want to see more videos so please cover your face with respirator when painting .Thanks !

You're right. They destroy beautiful, irreplaceable artistry & gorgeous natural wood. They do the same thing to historical homes with jaw-dropping woodwork--they cover it all with primer then paint it primer-white. It makes my stomach hurt, so the minute they open a can of paint I close the video. Can't watch that. This young woman is a true artist! Simply amazing what she does.
@driveway_mechanic3 жыл бұрын
A lot of pieces were painted white in the 1930’s I think as that was the style of the day and depression folks couldn’t afford new. Later, furniture styles went back to natural so, lacking the expertise to get the white off it was painted brown. I may have the dates wrong but I believe it was following design trends through the 1900s that resulted in so many beautiful pieces being painted.

What bothers me most is when they characterize it as “trash to treasure” after taking a 110yo piece that just needs to be re-shellacked and dumping a bunch of Dixie Belle chalk paint on it.

Glad you mentioned wearing a respirator. Not just for your safety but especially for those looking to you to learn. When I was younger for years I was an airbrush artist but always wore a respirator and even built a DIY suction system to the outside. Even just using a small artist airbrush, with a very uncomfortable heavy duty double filter respirator and a fan sucking out the overspray, when I stopped airbrushing I sneezed in all the colors of the rainbow (or all the colors of the project I was working on at the time). A respirator is a must even with ventilation.

Fireman friend gave me a sewing machine in cabinet years ago that was salvaged from a fire. The top looked like 3 or more layers of veneer peeling from water damage so I decided to strip it, re-veneer and refinish it. Turns out it had about 5 layers of paint on it that I took off and the wood underneath was perfect. Put a new finish on it and it looks brand new (almost) When my friend saw it I could tell he wished he had kept it. To this day it is one of my favorite pieces. Love your channel. Can’t wait to see more

One thing about making KZbin videos, it definitely makes you more conscious about what you do and how you work. Wearing a respirator while spraying that finish is a pain and inconvenient, but when you know there are people watching, especially if you want to have a positive influence on people just starting out, it causes you to go ahead and take the time and do things right. Accountability is a good thing! ;-)

There's a reason why walnut has always earned a premium price. The earthy warmth of the patina, like you've demonstrated here, just feels so incredibly rich with that fascinating grain. I love building with some of the exotics too, but walnut is so satisfying somehow. Another fabulous job!

This darn near made me cry. I inherited a very similar desk from my grandmother. It was really dark, but when I refinished it it had the most amazing veneers! I was in the military, so that desk followed me around for several years. On our last move back to the US, the only think that was damaged was that desk. It was destroyed. Wow, nice. One small point - I use a lot of epoxy for boat building and repair, and occasionally on furniture projects too. It's thought, and the people who make West System say that when you're using a glue/putty mix like that, you end up with a stronger joint if you pre-coat the joint with pure resin, then add the thickener to the epoxy and finish the glue up. The idea is that since the epoxy can stay liquid for a while, depending on temperature, it's easy for the bare wood to absorb the epoxy out of the glue mix and leave what amounts to a starved joint in places.
