This song, what's clearly a country western tune, is a great example of why the kids who grew up in the 80's have such a wide range of musical tastes. This song was a big Top 40 hit that got lots of radio play on pop stations. In the early to mid 80's you could have Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Journey, Barry Manilow, George Benson, Kool and the Gang, Sheena Easton, and Foreigner all in the Top 10, such VERY different sounds but all so good.

That's a good point. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and if you search Wikipedia for the top 100 songs of each year (which I've done) you will find an astonishing range of material. All kids who listened to radio back then (and that's all we had to listen to LOL) heard rock, pop, country, soul, jazz, Broadway, gospel, instrumental, even classical. We had hit songs sung in German, Japanese, French, "world music." One of the bad things about our modern music delivery system is that it very quickly sorts listeners into specific silos so they end up hearing the same type of music continuously. I'm really grateful I got to hear Kitty Wells and Janis Joplin and Sinead O'Connor. Timi Yuro and Brenda Lee and Linda Ronstadt and Aretha Franklin. The Archies and the Beatles and the Monkees and the Rolling Stones. Nirvana and Johnny Cash singing Nirvana. Thank you, AM/FM.

A feather in Juice's cap for us 80's fans was the fact that her songs played on the pop music radio stations just as much as they did on the country music stations. This has to be one of the finest power ballads ever recorded. Juice's vocal ability is a force to be reckoned with, especially in this song. "Angel of the Morning" also showcases it and both performances are filled with a passion that's rarely found these days. Interestingly, this version has a slightly more country sound with the steel guitar and a few other touches which is different from the version I have. This was a crossover hit and I heard it on pop/rock radio in the early 80's so most likely there were remixes for the different station formats. Juice does a great job with her version of Brenda Lee's "Break it to me Gently" as well.

Juice was very big (like her hair) crossover pop/country artist in the first half of the 80's. "Love's Been A Little Hard On Me" & "Tell Her No" are a couple of her up-tempo songs. "Break It To Me Gently" is another killer ballad. Any of them are good to react to.

Juice Newton was an incredible singer. I think it’s a testament to just how good she was that most every one of her songs did extremely well on both the pop and country charts. One you definitely need to check out is “Break It To Me Gently”. If this song put her voice on your map of great female country singers, “Break It To Me Gently” will absolutely blow you away. For something fun and a little different, you should also check out The Carpenters “Sweet Sweet Smile”, which was written by Juice Newton before she really became a star in her own right. It’s a fun and catchy song, and you’ll enjoy The Carpenters with a country flare. When a voice and songwriting talent like Juice Newton meets the voice of Karen Carpenter, you KNOW you can’t go wrong. 😊❤
