In checking the original text (circa. 1827), Reginald Heber wrote "God in three persons, blessed Trinity." This hymn was originally written specifically for the Festival of the Holy Trinity, celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. The tune, which was written by John Bacchus Dykes, first appeared in 1861 in "Hymns Ancient and Modern." It was named "Nicaea" after the Council of Nicaea in A. D. 325. The Council affirmed the Doctrine of the Trinity to refute the error perpetuated by the Arians who openly denied the Trinity. Removing the reference to the Trinity goes against the original intent of the hymn and the Doctrine of the Trinity.

1 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! 2 Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. 3 Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee, though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity. 4 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

If you have the song - Oh Lamb of God. I would love to hear it. The Lyrics are Oh Lamb of God who takes away my sins, to tell of thy rich grace, where do I begin, Oh Lamb of God redeemer, savior, friend, death's sting has been removed, hearts can sing again, Oh Lamb of God who makes my life complete, praises I'll sing to thee, humbly at thy feet, Oh Lamb of God who fills my heart with love, not of myself it stems, but from heaven above, Oh Lamb of God I long for your embrace, yearning am I for home, with you in that place.

dsvet There are two versions. The original is certainly “blessed Trinity” (written in c. 1826). The second version springs from a Baptist hymnal in 1879 where the term “trinity” appears to have been eliminated, not because of objections over the concept of the Godhead, but rather due to discomfort over the use of a term not found in the Bible. This version is pretty widespread now. For some people, this is the only version they have ever experienced. I don’t have a problem with either version, per se, although I think that the author’s original thoughts are important.

The last line of stanzas 1 and 4, "God in three Persons, blessed Trinity," was first changed to, "God over all, and blest eternally," by the Baptists in their Hymn Tune and Service Book of 1879. Beginning with Great Songs of the Church, many, though not necessarily all, of our songbooks have followed suit, apparently objecting to the term "Trinity" because it is not found in the Bible. If we use the word "Trinity" simply to mean that there is one God existing in three divine persons, which is clearly taught in the scriptures (Matthew 28:19, Acts 17:29), I personally do not see that there should be any problem with it. This eternal, perfect, and omnipotent Godhead or Trinity is certainly worthy of our adoration, blessing, honor, glory, and power, as we sing, "Holy, Holy, Holy." and neither did the early church fathers.

Why have you changed the text, "God in three persons, blessed Trinity." I was told by a "former" C-O-C minister that you believed in the Trinity.
@eleesaffold6 жыл бұрын
I do not think that the "Church of Christ" changed this hymn. I do believe that Harding chose this version of the song and I am not sure if they thought much about this change that you mention. As a Christian I am naturally a member of the church of Christ as are all Christians. I know that you are referring to those of us who happen to worship in a building with a sign out front that says "church of Christ". I am a member of one of those congregations of Christians and I can tell you that we clearly believe in singing "God in three persons, blessed trinity". I imagine that some people may be concerned that this particular phrase might cause someone to think we believe in three Gods but we do not. We believe in one God who is "above all, through all and in you all". We believe in one Lord, one faith, one baptism" and all Christians in one church over which Christ is the sole head. We believe there is "one body, and one Spirit" even as we are all called in "one hope" of our calling. So, I do not know how or why this particular version of this song does not have the original phrase about the trinity in it but it is not because the church of Christ does not believe in the Trinity. But, if you listen to the words of this particular version I believe you will agree that what it says is as true as the original version. So, why not sing it? I think this song is beautiful and its message is true and that is what is important, isn't it?
