I never heard of Elaine Paige until Susan Boyle mentioned her. This must have been a dream come true for Susan. Their voices are similar, but I actually prefer Susan's --- it's a little sweeter and more refined. Elaine is a belter and Susan shows more nuances, at least that's the impression I got here.

The song is from the musical Chess written by Björn and Benny from ABBA. They have written musicals after ABBA and Susan has recorded many of them! Another famous song from Chess is Anthem sung by Tommy Körberg that you also should listen to!

The great Elaine Paige is known as the First Lady of London's West End Musical Theatre in England. She had stared in many musicals in England and in the states on Broadway in New York City. It was no wonder why the lovely and talented Susan Boyle named her as her idol. Great reaction to two great ladies of song. I love listening to Susan Boyle, her audition blew me away years ago when she tried out on Britain's Got Talent....she is still one of my favorites!!! What awesome Harmony with Elaine Paige!! Thanks for sharing this video... 😊 Have you heard of the group Chapel Heart that was on America's Got Talent back in 2022? 3 ladies from Mississippi... 2 are sisters and the other is there first cousin. Anyway, they auditioned with one of their original songs "You can have him Jolene" ... a song in reply to Dolly Parton's song "Jolene" from the 1970's I believe. They not only got the golden buzzer from all 5 judges, but Dolly Parton tweeted them later congratulating them on their song, then later Loretta Lynn tweeted them asking them if they could redo one of her songs, and they did just recently, I will post the name of the song below after I look it up. They were also invited to sing at the Grand Ole Oprey after their audition, and have performed therw many times since!! I saw that AGT is strict as to what you can react to, but they do have a you tube channel, just type in "CHAPEL HART" in the you tube search bar. Even though they came in 5th place, they are doing concerts in America as well as other countries... they are really good!! I will post some of their music song titles below. You may know (or it might be somewhere in the comments feed) but Susan would likely have successful much sooner, but she chose to remain home caring for her elderly, ill mother. It was only when her mother passed away that she felt it was time to seek to fulfill her dream of being a singer. I believe she had sung in her local community.. but her entry into BGT struck a chord with ‘the masses’!! Thanks for your reaction, and for being so respectful of Susan!!

Later, for the charity Comic Relief, Susan performed this song again alongside comedian Peter Kay, in a hilarious parody of the ultra-80s video from the Elaine Paige/Barbara Dickson original. Elaine Paige is to British theatre what Audra McDonald is to American theatre. Two true icons with instantly recognizable voices. There are so many great singers in theatre and it’s a shame that more of them don’t have the wide audience that they deserve.
