Dear Cougan, I have been listening to dozens of your sermons. So grateful for the clarity with which the Holy Spirit enables you to speak the truth. I go to several Church of Christ web sites to listen to audio messages because CoC messages are the only ones that make consistent sense of scripture revealing the truth in proper context. As you know, most denominations take John the Baptist's words in Matt 3:11-12 to mean that Jesus promises to baptise everyone with the Holy Spirit. You explained that this passage can be viewed as fulfilled at Pentecost and Cornelius' house; but John was talking to those whom he called 'brood of vipers'. I understood John's words to simply mean that Jesus is the one who baptises with the Holy Spirit when we are baptised into his Name in water. Romans 8:9 "...And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ". John was probably unaware of the two events to come that we call Holy Spirit baptism, but did forsee the baptism into Jesus Christ being the means by which those who repent would receive forgiveness of sins and receive the indwelling Holy Spirit. (And those who refuse will be baptised with the fire of judgement). I thnk this is what John meant by "He will baptise with the Holy Spirit". I was wondering what you might think of this universal view.

Though not specifically stated in Scripture, I believe he was holy spirit baptized as the 12 apostles were, especially since he had the ability to impart miraculous gifts through the laying on his hands.

In John it is quite evident who was to be baptized by the Holy Spirit and how one is to get thegift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a gift from God to us. He comforts us and guides us. As stated by many people the Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead. He has the power to give different "Gifts" to those He choses to give the gifts through and to. The Holy Spirit can setup how the gifts are imparted. He gave this ability, to impart the gifts, to the Apostles only. However this doesn't mean that the Holy Spirit couldn't give out the gifts on His own. In regards to Cornelius he received one of the "Gifts" from the Holy Spirit but did not receive the "Gift" of the Holy Spirit from God. Why people cannot distinguish between these two facts is disconcerting.

The Apostles received the Holy Spirit BEFORE the day of Pentecost too....this is found in John 20:22 which was the evening of the Resurection.

The received the power of the Holy Spirit several times BEFORE the day of Pentecost, but it was temporary in nature. There is a reason Jesus said : Acts 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." They didn't have at that moment but they would and it would be proof that Jesus was at the right hand of the Father. You need to keep your timeline straight and also consider the purpose for the HS power being given.

Brother, As my knowledge, Bible tells only one God. God is singular not plural. Jesus is son of God. With the help holy spirit Jesus did lot of things which helps people to know/ understand / prove Jesus is son of God, God's plan, what God expects from his children and kingdom of God.

Evangelist Collins, I looked at the question you responded to below. I have just watched this first part on the Holy Spirit. I read elsewhere on another place that the Holy Spirit can help us with our prayer life if we ask Him. This comes from another church of Christ video from another minister. Am I understanding this correctly? If this is true, can I ask the Holy Spirit directly for help or guidance in other matters as well? Also, can I ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom?

Nobody knows all the details, but we can see all 3 members of the Godhead being involved in our prayers. We have Father to whom our prayers are directed. We have Jesus who is our only mediator and we have right to pray to the Father by His authority. We also have the Holy Spirit who is one of our intercessors. Jesus is an intercessor as well. He pleads for us from the thrown, and the Holy Spirit pleads from our hearts (Rom. 8). I know some will say you can pray to Jesus since He is God, but when you look at evidence from Scripture, that is is not how it was setup. We pray to the Father in Jesus' name or by His authority. Like I said, the Holy Spirit, which only helps Christians, is also automatically involved in our prayers to the Father. I am not talking about anything miraculous including speaking in tongues. The Holy Spirit known us and helps convey what we are praying even if we have trouble putting our thoughts into words. I could have supported all this with Scripture, but I am just giving you the reader digest version. Hope this info helps.

Evangelist Collins, thank you for responding. I think one place where I was confused is in Acts 7:59 where Stephen is being stoned and he calls out for Jesus to receive his spirit. I am not certain if this is a prayer or simply a plea for Christ to intercede in receiving Stephen's spirit. What you state in the above answer is what I was taught growing up in the church of Christ until now (age 62). On KZbin, I watch a lot of religious videos, but I know I can especially trust church of Christ videos because I can take the passages and verify what is being preached. Furthermore, the Bible passages are never twisted to fit denominational creeds or the denominational leaders' whims.

Romans 8:26 says “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Yes, the Holy Spirit who lives in us helps us in our prayer life when we are struggling on what to pray. Cougan I've enjoyed many of your lessons and this one i'm a little up in the air about. When people are baptized I usually hear in the name the father ,son and holy spirit. I agree people don't receive the same gifts as they used to. no more miracles and laying on of hands and stuff like that. Though they are added to the lord's church if you believed and where baptized for the right reasons. You come out of the water clean with no more sin but isn't the holy spirit still added to the person as a mark of the church? If it's not biblical though I know I got to change my mind set on that. Forgive my grammar i'm not the best of the best when it comes to typing.

Ephesians 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

ninelives2 2222 there are many baptisms in Scripture. Fire is the most important. This is the baptism John foretells we will get from Jesus. Also priests had to be baptized to be cleansed before they could be priests (Numbers). John baptized with water to cleanse of sins but later Jesus' death and resurrection became our baptism. He forgave all our sins. The baptism of the holy spirit in us is manifested by speaking in another tongue as mentioned in God's word. That is so cool to experience. Scripture also mentions the baptism unto Moses. Do your research into Scripture to learn more.

There is only one baptisms that saves (Eph. 4:4-5) and it's not Holy Spirit baptism, which was a promise and is only recorded twice in Scripture. The baptism Jesus commanded in The Great Commission was one His disciples could do. Jesus is the only able to baptize people with the HS not man. If you look at the conversions in Acts, it's clear that they water baptized. Jesus made the forgiveness of sins possible when He died on the cross. He did not forgive all our sins because if He did, we would all be save whether we wanted to be or not.

You can point out how we have been given everything we need to be pleasing to God through the Word ( 2 TIm. 3:16-17). If that is not a true statement and we are receiving new information through feelings or dreams then Paul was wrong. You can give examples from the Bible where others based things on their feelings and then show how they paid the price.

Sir why don't we worship or pray to Holy Spirit ? We pray to God the Father and ask in the name of Jesus , but Holy Spirit seems to be excluded in NT to be prayed or to be asked by His name ?

The simple answer is that the GodHead consist of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and each has their own roles. We certainly can worship any member of the Godhead, but prayer is done to the Father by authority of Jesus. Jesus is our mediator, the Holy Spirit is not.

Isn't the Holy Spirit God Himself? Jesus told the woman at the well in John 4:24 that God is a Spirit. Is not also God holy? So therefore God is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not separate from God; He is God. God the Father is God ruling over heaven and earth, God the Son is God in the flesh according to John 1:14, and the Holy Spirit is God interacting with men. Water can exist in three states as a solid, liquid, or gas, but its all still water. God functions in three ways but it is all the same Spirit of God. The Spirit of God is omnipresent and can exist everywhere at once and perform an infinite number of functions as once. Ephesians 4:4-6 says there is only one God not three separate Gods. Also look at Romans 8:9, Isaiah 9:6, John 14:9-10, Colossians 2:9
