The general consensus is: yes they could have done that however - A) it would have cheapened the joke and stakes of the story. Clone Frieren would have just quickly blown the mimic up and the fight would continue, but with a significantly different tone. B) In-universe; The real Frieren would not risk the chest in fear a grimoire was actually in there.

Unfortunately Himmel's handsomeness was very short lived. When he got old.. Himmel not only lost his handsomeness.. but also lost his blue hair, it was completely gone. His body, which was originally much taller than his friend, suddenly became very short. Very long, old white mustache and beard. This is a robbery against a handsome hero. At first I really wanted Himmel to marry Frieren.. but after seeing Himmel's old condition, it would be really bad if they got married.😂😂😂
